  • nothing matters when you're free... Paddy Reily is a great singer with a true Irish soul and a true Irish voice! Thanks him for his music! Hello from Russia!

  • the english abolished slavery then they invented transportation'

    haha

  • Brilliant song, brilliant singer. I wish I'd discovered Paddy years ago as I would have loved to have seen a live performance. Love to all my family in Kerry from Wales!

  • What was Trevelyan to do? Blame the Papist church for encouraging non-stop breeding. And now in England we are powerless to stop your tinkers or travellers destroying our land. But Paddy is one of the last of the genuine Irish singers we used to enjoy years ago.

  • @Wordsmith37

I was once rushed to hospital. An 'Irish Navvy' as 'we' call them cried for me. I'll never forget that Man.

    Jennie. x.

  • I'm a blessed man to live in the U.S. Free to practice my religion, go anywhere a free man can go, and not have to worry about some ignorant limy prick who wouldn't last a New York second in our neighborhood. Great song...

  • @paddy70paddy88 I am from Liverpool all my ancestors are paddys , I didnt choose to be born an english person but proud of where I was born and proud to have Irish ancestors, and just for your information me and my mates were in brooklyn were some yanks picked on us ,guess what we kicked the shit outta them, liverpool Irish beats yank Irish any day of the week,

  • @joningle lot of hidden hidtory...liverpool was originally a welsh settlement called llif pwl (flooded pool).....when has liver ever meant anything to you? cos its corrupted....we are all brothers...but the english are so brainwashed to the minority of elite in london

  • @3tangle3 @3tangle3 you dont know a lot ,where do you think all the Irish came to live from the famine onwards, 50 percent of Liverpools population have Irish Ancestry thats a fact, the Welsh name of Liverpool was over 1200 hundred years ago and thats only a theory ,and what the hell has London got to do with being English, All Im saying is that all the english should not be tarred with the same brush because of history,

  • @joningle I am confused.... you have told me very basic history from relatively modern times......england used to speak a form of "old welsh" (WHICH THEY TRY TO CALL romano british cos the state cant face the fact it wasnt english). England was celtic....the irish famine is very recent.....english history is at least 12000 years old....english culture is a thin veneer on British history....time to read up bud....I have a masters in genetics of the british isles

  • @3tangle3 you my friend are a complete dick ,I am not talking pre-history, why are you going back to the ice age to comment on political events that happened only centuries ago , it seem you have totally missed the point,English history only goes back less than 2000 years , the Angles the saxons and the jutes , ethnically cleansed the indiginous celts, there were no english here 12000 years ago, you obviously have mickey mouse degree, and god knows what haplo group you belong to,

  • @joningle Ancient ancestry:

    The European Travelers

    Haplogroup:

J1 This is mine before you ask

  • @joningle HAPLOGROUP: R1B1B2

  • what a lovely version

  • This bitter spanish prick ( donfixote) still poting on here.lol

  • Since 5 hours i'm back from Ireland, i have the irish songs still in my mind. Love this song very much.

  • einfach nur wunderbar, danke paddy

  • fuck the crown free our land

  • @thecelt1963 So next time you want to make an intelligent comment, learn from your comment, and do the opposite, cause your comment is full of shit. That England has done harm to Ireland in the past IS a fact, not MY OWN fact. If you consider that the division of Ireland is not Britain's fault then that's YOUR fact, not the historical fact. The reason why there's no one single Catholic Ireland is because YOUR Britain took a bunch of stinky protestants to Ulster and gave them lands.

  • @thecelt1963 I assure you I am very critical with my own country's past. I am not ashamed, but I regret that all those nations and people who suffered under the Spanish Kingdom. But in this page we are discussing about Ireland and her relationship with the British morons. If you post a comment in a youtube page about the barbarities that my country commited in the South America, I wouldn't attack you, because it is clear what my country did. Britain did the same, face the facts.

  • @thecelt1963 I respect your opinion mate, but if you're going to question my opinions you should give me the reasons why my comments are historically wrong, not just stating that they are wrong. I would pick up a book of "my history" (I suppose you don't mean my autobiography), just say what you mean by that. You mean a book about history of Spain, the biggest oppressive Kingdom from 1492 to 1600s?

  • Balenza we don't hate the "English" there are very families in Ireland that don't have some familial connection with England. As irishand folkmusic pointed out this is about "sorrow" and remembering a crucial historical event from the past which has shaped he island that we live on today i.e. the great famine of 1846 and how one man attempted to "beat the system". it has nothing to do with hatred but is a cry for justice and it's our way of remembering all the "michaels" and "marys" .

  • Love Paddy Reilly! He sang at my Mom and Dad's 40th wedding anniversary and it was the best family gathering ever!

  • What are you doing in Spain btw. No work in bankrupt ROIreland or training with eta?

  • @Balenza345 I'm Spanish you moron. And before you go on saying shit like "if you're Spanish what has Ireland to do with you?" I say that one is free to support Irish Nationalism, no matter his heritage or place of birth. The love I haave for Ireland is bigger than that many Irish people have for their country. You and your protestant buddies are just materialistic cunts. You mock Ireland's economic crisis, because the only thing matters to you is money. That's why Ulster sold helself to Britain

  • @DonFixote100 A fenian lover bejaysus. And who says I'm protestant?

That said the proddies suffered terribly under the jack boot of republican war mongers.

  • @Balenza345 I didn't say you were protestant. I said "you and your protestant buddies", its your buddies who are protestant. That means I consider you and protestants the same thing, cause you oppose Irish Nationalism. And what's bejaysus anyway? Proddies didn't suffer the Irish Famine, and proddies were perfectly happy with the fact that Catholics were being persecuted and marginalised by the terrorist state in which they lived in (I mean Catholics living in Ulster). I'm not against you anyway

  • @Balenza345 I didn't say you were protestant. I said "you and your protestant buddies", its your buddies who are protestant. • @Balenza345 if bejaysus is an Irish expression remember I am Spanish not Irish, I don't live in Ireland.

  • @Balenza345 if bejaysus is an Irish expression remember I am Spanish not Irish, I don't live in Ireland. Caramba!

  • Hey Donfixon sing along to this to the tune of the above......

Low lie the fields of Northern Ireland,

Where once I shot a young fenian down,

    He screamed in pain,

So I pumped him one again,

Now its so peacefull around the fields of Northern Ireland.

  • @Balenza345 I suppose your comment is witty, I suppose. First, bitter? Me? Now you're a psychologist or something? I think YOU are abit fucked up, since you visited this page, you being a protestant scum. Second, I think the IRA has murdered more people than your fellaz in Ulster. And I feel happy for each and avaery fucking protestant killed by the IRA. UP THE RA!!! CATHOLIC IRELAND RIGHT NOW!!!

  • @DonFixote100 Yeah you've got three battles to fight. First the brits out, then eliminate the protestants then the dirtiest fight off all will be amongst your selves. Bitter taigs.

  • @DonFixote100 You are certainly showing why you have been banned before. last time your rants were against the Jews. Now you are anti Christian..perhaps you are a troll, or perhaps just a nasty little retard!

  • Can we forget the hatred we English have with the Irish and vice versa and just enjoy this fantatstic performance and this fantastic song?

  • It has nothing to do with hate! The english just don't belong in Ireland!!

  • In tears m8.so sublime and peaceful,my favourite on matchday at PARADISE,Hail Hail!!

  • fantastic song, fantastic voice!

  • GEWOON GEWELDIG ZEGGEN WIJ IN VLAANDEREN .................

  • Will Irish people ever learn to bury their hatred of the English?

  • @Balenza345 Depends what you mean by hatred, because this song portrays sorrow, a man who was taken away from his home and sent to a penal colony. We remember the past and because of it we have fantastic music.

  • @IrishandFolkmusic

    well said

  • @Balenza345 no irelands hatred off england will never end

  • @colbert6 It will end actually. The suns gonna blow in about five billion years from now and wipe out earth.

Than all hatred between humans wil end.

  • @Balenza345 this is 2 people in love getting pulled apart against their will, over the petty crime of stealing food to feed their children. and its not english people who are hated, it was their goverment ruling/punishisment of the time represented in the song that is hated. most english people i know are good people, i'd even call a few friends. (u can find an asshole every country ur in, even ireland),

  • @Balenza345 will you ever learn to bury yourself under the ground?

  • @DonFixote100 What a stupid comment.

  • @Balenza345 you don't deserve anything better. It's tiresome to read the same fucking comment about burying hatred. In fact you are stupid enough to relate this song with Irish nationalism. Why is it that the one who rapes, kills and steals expects that those whom he has offended should forget the offenses? Why is it that England has never apologised for its racist and tyrannical policies against Ireland in the past. That's the reason why people like you should be buried alive.

  • @DonFixote100 You sound very bitter for a 24 year old. When the brits move out it will be pay back time for the violent acts of the murdering ira scum. Then your ilk will be buried alive.

    Arzehole.

  • @DonFixote100 I could ask that of the catholic church. I think that the financial aid the British have given the ROI since 1922 is enough, I see that the Bank of tthe vatican has never done any such thing, nor its mouthpiece, Santander!

  • @MrMickroach You are another example of protestant capitalism and materialism, you can olny speakk about banks and money. I hope you will not renegade from Ulster when Britaiin suffers a bankrupt. You and your protestant fellaz are whores to England, like your mothers and grannies were, who sold their land and pussies to brits for money, power and econimically stable country. That's your history, selling after selling. But honest Irishmen are always Irish, no matter if Ireland has money or not.

  • @MrMickroach You proteestants are like the Whore of Babylon, and you have turned Ulster into your own Babylon. When Ireland split from Britain the Irish people kew they would have finnancial problems, but that didn't matter to them. You quasi-Irishmen preferred to staay in Britain because she had money and power. You're a bunch of whores. Fuck you all greedy cunts. Money, money, money money, go after it whores.

  • @Balenza345 No.

  • @Balenza345 guilt getting to you is it?

  • @shortybig50 Guilty? Moi? I be from from Kazakhstan. Why would I be guilty?

  • @Balenza345 what are you on about hatred...its not a hate of the english people....but of the past actions of the elite in london....why wont you "english" wake up....you are ancestorally our brothers and yet you are loyal to a foreign norman/germanic elite?

  • @Balenza345

Irish people do not hate English people, we never did. Take a look at how we welcomed her Majesty last May.

We like independence, we like freedom; but above all we like to know that individuals will be treated justly and fairly.

And that is what we always teach out sons and daughters, be free.

  • @Balenza345 your a fookin idiot and I am English.

  • im an irish man i dont hate the english i hate what they done too my people for 800 years but the joe soap on the street didnt do it

  • Nothing like this one. Got to love this voice!

  • england should give the ireland back to the irish to whom it belongs...? and stop trying to be heroes and leave all the other contries alone too...?

  • One of Paddy Reilly's greats, now the anthem for the Irish football squad & the Irish Rugby team supporters, and not to forget Irish supporters of Celtic football club. What a brilliant vice Paddy has and the feeling he puts into this song!

  • Heard a lot of versions of my favourite Celtic song....this kills me,simply Celtic and beatiful!

  • this version makes the hair stand on the back of my neck.. proud to be born and raised in athenry..

  • As an american who spent time in the north last year at the beginning of Marching Season I do not see how wounds can heal if they are allowed to continue such blatent disrespect! What Marching Season is equivalent to is the Klan marching through Alabama in the 60s. I would also like to see the British government comit the funding they had orginally promised so that they can build an infrastructure that will bring together both sides! Look forward people :)

  • @jpsiracuse Not sure if you've been living in a hole or anything, but Britain gave Ireland £7bn as a bailout package, is that not funding? In the North, free University is subsidised by the British taxpayer

  • @strettyford Anything less would be a disgrace...............

  • @jto1916 How is it a disgrace? The tax which i am paying to the Government is going over to Northern Irish students while I pay £9,000 a year. That's the disgrace of this situation if you ask me.

  • @strettyford On the contrary - the disgrace is what the Brits. have done to the Irish over the centuries. Nothing personal, just a fact. I guess it's payback time?

  • @strettyford well if ypour country didnt invade ireland there wouldnt be a divided ireland and the north would not be part of the UK and therefore you wouldnt need to be paying tax towards as you say "Northern irish students" However your tax also goes to your theiving politicians so remeber that...Whats worse?

  • @jpsiracuse couldn't agree more

  • paddy hes god

  • unreal

  • He is not a REBEL singer he is a good irishman, lol.

  • This is an excellent live performance.

  • He is wonderful! He sings mostly rebel songs, and beautifully done too. That is one of the reasons apart from his magnificent voice that I have all of his songs on my computer. It doesn't matter why we love his music. There is no one to compare in my opinion. There is something for everyone in his music.

  • Great song, great sound, Great Countr,y we have been betrayed by our own, time for another rebellion I hope this one works. Leann air aigh Eire Stand up and fight Munster...God bless us all......

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is for my Pops,,, the infamous Jack Bell from Ireland... May ye rest in peace with your beloved Sheila. We miss you down here, but Baby Jack has said that you have taught him to dance the jig and to do some fancy foot work with his soccer ball. I hope to play crib again with you one day, until then,,,,, smile.

    all of our love xoxoxo

  • Paddy's voice is always tremendous. But, I prefer the fiddle to the flute, everytime.

  • Up The Ra!!

  • Comment removed

  • @89maisie Here Here! You are right, it's a shame though the British army are still murdering in the Middle East and Africa.

  • Comment removed

  • @89maisie What the fuck has this song got to do with the "RA" or the copper who was murdered the other week???? You have been living in England too long methinks......... lived there since the early eighties myself and know how the bastards always try to turn every song that is connected to Ireland into a "RA" song.

  • Comment removed

  • @89maisie Well I don't remember saying they murder all over the World, but I agree that the IRA are wrong to do what they are doing but I just also think that all armies are wrong, they allow murdering by calling it 'legal or just'.

  • @IrishandFolkmusic

    fair enough!

  • Irish Soul Music At It's Best!

  • @TheRababa GENAUO !

  • the POWER in his voice !!! Amazing

by the way paddy is still my fav irish singer by far

  • amazing !!

  • best version of the fields :)

  • here here

  • he sings it with so much meaning.

  • he is one of the best irish rebel singers ever

  • He is more of a folk singer he don't often sing rebel songs.

  • He does a great job on all his somgs, but this one is the best.

  • Fate was kind to us when Ireland and it's music were blessed with the magical tones of Paddy Reilly!

  • @benoni45 You are so right, PR has a wonderful voice !

  • I SERTAINLY AGREE

  • certainly*

  • I remember the first time hearing the song was a Dropkick Murphey's cover and when I tried to find a video of a live performance I found the original that I never knew about. What an amazing artist and a fantastic song

  • So beautiful, really stirring stuff !

    Norfolk UK

  • wow he was really young, no matter how many times I hear him sing it always hits me, great voice, awesom!!!

  • our english teacher is a irish man and we sing this song in our lesson athenry is in ireland or??

  • Yes. It's in Co. Galway.

  • Type in Fields of Athenry The Dubliners.

  • This 1982 concert is Paddys Definitive, Fields Of Athenry. thanks for posting.

  • I've seen a later version, (maybe a Dubliners' reunion at the Gaiety,) hardly any hair, glasses, but the voice, and delivery near enough identical.

  • I've seen that reunion version too - a terrific version, really atmospheric.... But it seems to have been removed from youtube - I was looking for it tonight and cant find it :(. Anyone know why it was taken off? (or if not where is it?) ta.

  • I sent Your message on to the guy who posted it, then I found it

"watch?v=NLZRWNdGCUc" after you've typed in the You tube site, (full links get deleted - so best I could do)

  • great - thankyou
