Do we know how they were "cured"? Some methods were more humane than others, and the two hour timeframe seen in this film suggests to me that they were experiencing a particularly extreme form of "re-education".
@Steeveriffic: soldiers during WWI who were sent to psychiatric stations for rehabilitation were actually not sent back to the front. They were typically prepared for reintroduction to civilian life through agricultural work and handicrafts on rural farms and were expect to do their "duty" by resuming productive lives at home. Psychiatrists widely believed that symptoms of war neurosis, as it was called, were contagious and therefore dangerous for healthy soldiers to witness.
@irishdecky2 From burial or after burial means that they were buried in the ground, or under other debris - by an exploding shell. Ex.: when a shell exploded near or right at the edge at the trenches, where these soldiers were, the explosion would bury them in the ground. Some would die instantly, bur some would survive until someone would come and dig them out, and this would take hours and even days given the circumstances. The horrors of trench warfare.
@kentaur69 Thank you. I thought that, but then wondered if it was a medical term. These videos only show those who were cured, imagine the thousands who were incurable.
You have to admit, seeing them at their worst during the clip, it is pretty amazing that they were able to be as rehabilitated as much as they were, given what was known about the brain, nerves, spine and other body parts and components (mind) and how those were normally treated.
@GrenAcid Ur stupid. They didn't know about lead poisoning or mercury poisoning, they didn't know anything about the brain or mental health and they did not observe the human rights of patients.
Modern natural remedies are more natural then pretty much anything they used back then, especially for mental and cerebral conditions.

The sad part is....how many other soldiers were shot for "cowardice" after finally breaking after months and months of uninterrupted trench warfare?

@The2Lad ...I was merely making a statement. I meant "funny weird" rather than "funny ha-ha".

Cured in 1917. These poor bastards probably got sent right back to the war.

What's "re-education" means? Electroshock? Because the time spent for "re-education" is so small compared to the starting problem.
bearminator90 1 year ago
@bearminator90 re-education was anything to get the them better. Electroshock, brainwash, making them face their fears, anything

What do they mean by "re-education"? Physical therapy? Hypnosis? Some kind of "talking cure"? I'm unfamiliar with the terminology.

@zazendo knowing the medical treatments back then...I can't imagine that it was pleasant. Probably torture and dangerous drugs of some sort.
