A while back, the folks at Rawvolution cafe did a test where they soaked the coconuts in blue dye overnight. When they opened the coconut it had no blue on the meat. The conclusion was that this perhaps meant the formaldehyde did not permeate either, but I don't know that for sure. I would say that if you are concerned, then use them in moderation. If you are eating them daily, try to find an organic source. I did a google search and only found frozen organic coconut water.
Elaina, I buy gorgeous and delicious baby Thai coconuts from a wonderful Asian market but have always wondered about them being soaked in formaldehyde to preserve them during shipping here which may take weeks. Do you think the formaldehyde gets through the coconut shell at all and into the insides of the coconut? I have never seen organic coconuts here in America at all. What are your thoughts about the formaldehyde?
What is the good brand name that has a cleaver with 3 rivets? I have purchased baby Thai coconuts for a couple years now and have struggled endlessly trying several different ways I have seen online to open. If I didn't love the baby coconut so much I would have given up long ago. You made it look so easy. I do not own a cleaver but would like to buy one if you will send me a good brand name to look for. Thank you so much.
@pamalee7 I have found that the inexpensive cleavers from the Asian markets work well. The super thick blades are NOT very good. They become dull and just don't work well plus they are too heavy. A nice light, thin blade is ideal. The other trick is to keep it sharp with a nice little Rollsharp.
This is so stupidly simple and it works. My wife just asked me to open a young Thai cononut and I said, "err, let me Google that". It worked first time. Thank you.
@mrnelgin I'm so glad it was helpful. You can store the water in glass jars and freeze it (leave 1/3 empty space for the water to expand) and you can also freeze the meat in a zip lock bag or freezable container for months until you are ready to use.
i luv coconut water an jelly but i hav an easier way to open a young coconut. jus pelt it on de ground. dat's wat my mummy taught me an 2 get water go by de coconut man. TRINIDAD STAND UP!!!!
@glowingdarkmatter25 thank god you asked that i was wondering myself lol. welp i guess ill have to wait tomorow to find out if mine is bad or good lol
@glowingdarkmatter25 Purple meat is bad and so is the water. Usually if you look inside the coconut you will see a crack somewhere meaning that bacteria has started to grow. Even on the outside you will see some pink mold on the bottom of bad coconuts. Also if you aren't sure give it a good smell and see if it smells moldy or musty (like a library or basement). That means stay away!
@MandaPandization Yes, you are right. I only use my cleaver for opening coconuts and I sharpen it often. Never use a good knife as you could actually chip the blade (I've done it!)
Great stuff! I just posted the way i open them below. Maybe just as easy, and requires no big cleaver. (we met many years ago in the Bay). Keep up the good work!
This is thee best coconut video I've ever seen, and you've convinced me that whacking open my coconuts is just loud and messy! I love the fruit scoop idea, and will be looking to purchase one. I love love love fresh coconut water in the morning and often have to share over half of it with my kids. Please make more videos your Amazing and gifted at what you do. Kat
Appreciate this technique ... might even save me a finger or two! Found video based on recent RawFoodVideo episode. Also, good articulation and stage presence.
The coconut you are using is a Thi Coconut not an Organic Whole Coconuts. Thi Coconuts are NOT good because of they way they are grown packaged and shipped. They are grown using chemicals and insectisides, and they are dipped in framaldihyde after being cut, then they are dipped in wax and then shipped to the US. These checmicals get into the coconuts making them lose all of their nutritional value. Use ORGANIC coconuts next time. Good video though. Watch my video on how to open a coconut.
Ah Elaina your video is great! Your presentation reminds me of watching a chef on the Food Network, but nicer - since you are a raw food chef! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for sharing your comments. I'm glad that I was able to make your coconut experience a little easier.
Fun addition: add 1 Tbs. spirulina powder to your coconut water, it's super high in protein and very yummy too!
Love,
