i love frank tovey music i first heard the album gag when i was digging through the vinyls at WMNF in tampa later on i played ad nauseam during my set and almost got in trouble cause of the single fuck in the song but it was great

To much talk of DM on here. And the documentary needed way more live shows and film of Tovey himself. Most of the good stuff you can watch on utube. The rest was complementary to Tovey but, I wanted to see the goofy bastered dancing and shit, not people around him talking about how good he was I know that.

Depeche Mode went on and became commerical success while improving on the forumla they started out with - hence why they became big and Fad gadget didnt .

Sorry fg fans but overall DM is by far more successful and better group , and they didnt sell out either.

Like you say Depeche Mode had a "formula". I'm not knocking DM because I LOVE THEM, but Tovey was way more experimental and didn't keep a "formula". Sometimes it pays to be unorthodox and remember DM are talking about how they "made it" because they were onstage with Tovey. ;)

The main difference I can see is the vocals.

Gahan has distincitve and great voice , Tovey sounds a lot like any other synth group then .

I mean as far as comparing goes you cant I agree, Depeche Mode ( at least early Mode ) while having similiar sounding songs in some respects had hits - FG only had one.

Depeche Mode are legends , Fad Gadget are well trailblazers for their time but unforunately that didnt last long.

Daniel Miller, founder of Mute, produced his own project The Normal in '78 & apart from, Fad was the 1st signing to Mute in '79 & DM in '81. Dan knew a bit more on synth programming than they & is what makes for the similar sound that they all have. It's when FG & DM were more established did they start moving away from the same dialed in sounds created by Dan. Compare Ricky's Hand/Lady Shave to Photograhic/Tora,Tora,Tora & inc. Warm Leatherette & you'll see. Daniel was the producer. Get it?

Depeche liked Kraft work and were influenced much much more by them. I bet they only liked Lady shave. To me that is the only real synth pop song that grabs you. Might we simply honor the work of the great Fad Gadget without resorting to bickering about Fad versus DM. I've loved both for over 20 years. I do prefer pre-Violator Mode, however. Am I the only one who likes Frank Tovey & the Pyros and the "Tyranny" album as well as the Fad stuff? Fad's passing made me so sad for I hoped a revival in his career would precipitate greater recognition of how gifted Frank really was.

As you know, Fad Gadget was the second artist Miller released on Mute, the first being himself as The Normal. While Fad was dark, tweaked-out, and sardonic, DM was light, fluffy, and fun--perhaps the realization of what Miller was trying to achieve with Silicon Teens.

yeah Fad was better than dM thats why he had to support them in 2001. Fad's music was no when near as good as dM's music. Mostly if not all apart from "whats you name" songs by dM are good. Just the track "Stripped" would be hard to beat with any song fad wrote. Gore is a mastermind with elecronic music. Thats why dM sound so good. So stop kidding yourselves.
