Having been a tank crewman, I can certify that the M1-series tanks have been run on diesel fuel. Many years ago the Army switched to JP-8, which is a type of jet fuel, so they'd only have to supply one type of fuel on the battlefield. But when they first entered service, they all ran on diesel. The engine's fuel control can adjust to run on just about any type of flammable liquid--though some are better than others about not damaging the other internal components of the engine.
People are always comparing Russian Tanks to U.S. tanks. The fact of the matter is this is no longer the Cold War, we have more of a chance that another nation would attack us before Russia.
As a U.S. soldier I can say its the crew and the manpower behind these machines that make them so deadly and powerful.
So unless you are a tank crewman or a war expect with a college degree stop having stupid youtube comment wars.
@MaximIziurov It doesn't just consume diesel, but anything that can produce a big enough spark. If we were in those types of combat situations we'd modify them for that. This isn't the 60's anymore.
@MaximIziurov The M1A2 consumes jet fuel, not diesel. JET FUEL! It has a jet turbine for an engine. If the enemy tank is across the river, the M1 doesn't need to cross the river, it can just snipe it from a safe distance and let the sabot round do the crossing. The manual ammo loader reduces the probability of failure. A person does not have gears that can jam or motors that can burn out. In the Russian tank with the auto loader, if your loader breaks, you're screwed. USA steel any day!
overrated . Turns out they were not facing t72's in iraq after all but t-50s upgraded by Iraqis in the 70's. Digitalized/modernized t-72 is still a threat to the M1. With a smaller profile and bigger gun it is he who fires and spot first. M1 is still one of the best tanks still in service from the last century.
why would anyone put this m1 on you tube? i know, to make u.s m1 tank fleet look bad! it's a disgrace to the u.s army

@SmokerFace12
Main and probably only important difference it's engine. It's the crew and terrain who would play critical role, not tanks.
