Not only is this a Smiths song, it's the last song the Smith's ever recorded together and a great example of the Marr/Morrissey split. The simple sing-song melody drove Marr crazy, where Moz liked that he was able to litter the chorus with weird curious references to his shoes! Truly a great, if not for it the tune itself, but rather for it's place in history. The last ever Smith's song, resurrected at last.
They have to sit down and not make any noise because it was a live broadcast on radio 2. I was there, free tickets and we were specifically told not to clap or anything.
I've always loved this song - a very underrated and witty hidden gem, and the last thing Morrissey and Marr ever wrote together. Oh, the wonderful memories...
No, it WAS the last they wrote together. It originally appeared on the 12" version of Girlfriend in a Coma as the extra track, and was recorded during the final, disastrous session at Grant Showbiz's studio, along with Work is a Four Letter Word.
Glad to hear any Smiths song in his set, but I find it odd that he would choose this latter day b-side when there are so many other well known, cleverer, or poignant songs to choose from The Smiths' back catalogue. I guess it's still better than "Work is a Four Letter Word."
I'm actually ecstatic that he would dust off such a chestnut as this- he also played it at the Wellmont in NJ last Monday....(Work Is A Four Letter Word woulda even better, but highly unlikely...) I take it that you're not a big fan of either song- each to his own...Since he's been trucking out Smiths staples live for the last ten years (like How Soon Is Now- which many of us don't really need to hear again) and his new albums are pretty patchy, its cool to see him throw out a few rarities...
quite odd Morrissey-solo did a poll of what Moz song you want him to sing live. The majority of votes was in favor of this song, then suddenly he plays it??
I just went back to look at that poll, and it only had 147 of the 5400 votes-- very low down on the poll. So I'm guessing no. Still happy to see and hear him sing it.

Oh come on Morrissey, you ain't kidding anyone. Your no longer a 20 digit combination to unlock, more like a 51 digit combination to unlock!

This song needs the whistling in it. Hearing it again is nice, but man, does it remind me how great Johnny Marr is.

the band is awful, I wish he would just change the while set of musicians!! They sound like pub rock band!

At 0:58 seconds, listen to this genius of a man.
"Yellow and green, a stumbling block. I'm a twenty-digit combination to unlock with a past where to be 'touched' meant to be 'mental.'"

Me too! I was thrilled as hell when he performed it 4-8-09. He also sang "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others".
