I remember watching this as a little girl..I was so sad that she was getting rained on..but, my sister explained that she was happy to continue for her fans..that made me feel better..I love Lady Di!
this mammoth concert could have turned into an unprecedented nightmare...however, her historic performance has not yet been given the credit deserved. truly legendary.
diana ross was in interview on oprah recently Ms Ross said on that day they were telling her to get off stage when it was thundering and lightning severely she said out loud it took me a life time to get here am not going anywhere she said also she was afraid if they would have turn her lights off from her many of her fans would probably gotten seriously hurt or worse so she stayed until everyone left the park now that is what you called a mother of all mothers to her children !
@HERMAJESTY83 no she was not controlling she did whatever it took too keep the people from hurting each other or getting upset so she did whatever neccessary to keep the audience safe and calm that is not control she is the best entertainer and kept it in tact like she did amazing Diana Ross The Lady Boss!
After The Ghetto Mama came out of Diana The Audience calmed Down they had fun for the rest of the short concert rain out i am amazed she stood in the rain still she wanted too keep the audience safe her number 1 priority God Bless Ms Ross!
I was only 13 yrs old; we drove from Bridgeport, CT. to the Bronx for a Church function, which we had arrived a little too early for. Smartie driver decided to drive to Central Park. On my way to the restroom with the older kids, it came down. I could not see the hand in front of my face without feeling like my eyes would pop, from opening them so wide. All I could see was a wall of pure white in front of me, and the wind was pretty intense. I've never been that petrified in my life... =)
@ SuperAJ71 "BLOOPER"! I think the 1st cancelled show was even more "AWESOME" then the second show. No one else could have handle a 60mph winds, down pouring rain, thunder and lightening the way she handle it a true professional. The magnitude of it all, hundreds of thousands a sea of people stood devotely. This concert is definately one for the books to go down in pop cultural history.
This was one of the biggest bloopers in recent pop history. It was my graduation day from elementary school, and this is ALL they talked about that whole day. I found it kinda funny that it culminated this way.
I guess I was inspired to look this up by the fact that the Black Eyed Peas just cancelled their CP concert for similar reasons. Guess they learned from this.
Wow hundreds of thousands of her loyal & dedicated fans stands in a tropical storm to see her perform. Truely the firstlady of entertainment "AMAZING DIANA ROSS".
I was there..I will never forget it..it was a very hot day and started raining like crazy!...It was just unbelievable!
it was a magical night..! ...Then she came back the very next day!. I didn't think she would come back, because it cost the city to much money that night, but she did and put up a great show...I wish she would come back and perform in Central Park again..
I was there both days and agree that Miss Ross was at the top her game and handled the unexpected.... I have always loved what she did, in group or solo.
Wow. I was there! I can't believe it's already 28 years gone by. I never did make it back the next day, but in my opinion, there was no reason to. This was one of the most awesome days of my life and I will never forget it. Ms Ross showed her love and glory like never before or since. Thank you for posting this!
@joseandsusy I was there too. I went back the second day but it was not worth it. I too had one of the best days in my life at this event. I will never, never forget it. And I feel so lucky.
I remember this like it was yesterday. She was at the top of her game. This concert truly made history around the world. Everyone was talking about it the next day. We love you Diana. You are timeless.
she mad history with this concert because she still sung in that rain.. and calm the crowd down to leave to come back the next day for her to do the concert all over again.. SIMPLY AMAZING !!
It feels like just yesterday when this was in my ears and in my eyes..Miss the times back when...Blessings to all the ones who love and want love..Christopher
@doug5574 Wow. How beautiful. I too was at this wonderful concert, and in the front section. This is still one of my favorite life moments. Congrats to you and your wife. There was a lot of love at this concert, and you found it.
@doug5574 aww, how beautiful! I was there too, ELECTRIFYING!!!!!!! I am telling my daughter how thankful I am for having been able to live such an experience.
@amaram4 thanks for your comment -- it was a wonderful experience, and a life changing one for me--and my wife, who is sitting here beside me watching the Grammys--and mourning the loss of Whitney, another great one. That Diana concert showed what that woman was made of--the stuff of legend!
I can't think of a performer today that would have stood out in the elements as she did on that windy, rainy night and perform with so much ease. She deserve to be crowned a true diva, icon, etc. She has earned every ton of it.
@aaaniimeThis is my favorite moment from CP. I'm a major Diana Ross fan and have seen her perform so many amazing things since 1964 that I can't list them here, but this certainly is way up there. She's an outstanding performer who still slays audiences better now than ever, but there are moments, here and there, where her brilliance and uniqueness defy even my own high standards of awesome. I've met & spoken with her. She's always kind, gracious, warm and real. She is what special really means.
it was really rolling with thundering and lightning i saw it it did stopped briefly but it kept getting darker and darker amazing that her back upsingers ask her too stay then she told her adoring fans she will stay but their safety comes first ladies and gentlemen and children leave the park calmly quietly she will do it again the next day which the weather was beautiful the following the day.what legendary artist diana ross stays soak and wet and a severe thunderstorm! she was amazingly brave!
Oh this made me cry! I love Diana Ross. I only made it through my childhood because I imagined that she was my Mother. I didn't have a good Mother and I learned how to love myself through Diana's music. She was and still is a great example for me. Thanks for posting her clips.
This is GREAT...nothing to say...JUST GREAT. The BOSS LADY is just the BEST DIVA EVER that's when you recognize a TRUE PROFESSIONAL ARTIST who dare the mother nature and just do the show no matter what. BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!!! MISS ROSS
Whitney Houston performed live in Central Park today, and although she is known for her stage presence, she simply talk-singed, and really has that Billie Holliday parallel to her life. Basically a living Florence Ballard circa 1975 today (though not as broke). But Diana Ross is the ultimate diva! Neither Rain, Wind, nor Lightning stops her!
This is so amazing to see. This is how her memoirs open. She was so sad that it rained on the first night! I love seeing this in real life and to know what she was thinking and feeling... I love her!! She amazing, loving. This is exactly how she explained it in the book!
I was there and it was an intense time....she handled it beautifully.....didn't want to do the next show, but did it and then didn't want to donate the money to the children's playground in Central Park...BUT....she did anyway! Truly gorgeous....and yes...what make up was THAT!!! Flawless!
Diana Ross is so amazing! She could command a stage like no other and make burly men hold hands and sing together at the sound of her voice. She , Michael Jackson and Barbra Streisand are the last of "real" superstars.
I remember seeing this and thinking, "What an amazing lady." Even at my young age, I knew I was watching a legend and a pro. My grandma thought DR was plumb-CRAZY for staying out there in that downpour.
Now you know why Michael wanted his children to be like Diana. Class of the highest level. Michael and Diana sang from their soul. I was their that day. Got soaked with the rain and with Diana's love. Will NEVER FORGET it. The young artists of today don't have that class. Michaels children will live the best lives under Diana after his mother passes. Thank you Diana . God chose you to let people experience divine love of the highest order. May he always bless you.
I am a grown man, but I love my music...and this makes me teary...It is so elegant and charming. Baring her soul to the crowd. Seen her live in Melbourne a few times.....Is she married...I need a wife xxx I am handsome...is there anybody out there that has the charm of Diane (NOT BRITANY DICKWAD)
this is the true meaning of what it means to be a star! when she kept singing in the rain, she let the world know that she cares for her fans! she even came back the next day because eventually she did have to stop the show!
I was at this concert, surely the treat of my life. I was late getting there because my boyfriend and I had had a fight. When I got to Central Park the police was pushing people back and out of the park because there were too many people. But as the police was detouring people, I keeping going toward. At this, a police officer pulled me behind a barrier which lead me right up to the front of the stage. It was just amazing. An act of God!
i love miss ross...she did not want to leave that stage....a true professional in every sense of the word....the show must go on...aint no mountain high enough for diana....love, love, love!
i remember when this happened in 1983. Miss Ross is the best. I met her in 1995. Will never forget that moment! she signed a cd booklet for me. I love you Miss Ross
This is a REAL performance, and the best part isn't only the singing. It's also how she oversees the exiting crowd, and even promises another show the next day. This is an A-class performance from an A-class performer.
You can add all the glitter and lights to a show to make it snazzy, but Miss Diana ross only needs the connection between her and the crowd.
Whoever thinks that she is a cold and thoughtless woman needs to watch this video and rethink their opinion.
Diana has been creating these classic moments her entire career. She is second to NONE. All the comparison to Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Donna, Tina, Gladsy, Patti, Dionne, and Chaka are worthless. Diana is far above that level is the scheme of ENTERTAINMENT. Diana is amongst the Sinatras, the Hepburns, the Taylors and Streisands of the industry. Diana is like the last great Hollywood legend. A Super Starlett! Liz Taylor, but with soul. What can you say, but she's THE BOSS...MISS DIANA ROSS
Time to learn how to read and interpret. I did not say anything negative aganist the aforementioned ladies. I, simply, just stated that comparison btw them and Diana are worthless. Diana is on another level. That does not mean the others are not great they are just not DIANA.
OMG! This changed my life. I was so young when this came on. I'll never forget watching this beautiful woman singing in the rain and promising to come back the next day. I'll love her forever because of this special.
This is one of the greatest performances I have ever seen and one of the greatest videos on YouTube....thank you so much for posting this, and thank you so much Miss Ross for being such a true GODDESS!!!
Diana is the only artist i know where her live versions of songs are actually beter than the studio ones, i just am amazed by this, id prefer to listen to this then any of her studio stuff, this is so pure she is so talented
Michelle Williams as Diana Ross. You have got to be kidding! While I think Michelle is a great artist. She is no Diana Ross. I think you would have to have an all star supporting cast and introduce a new actrees to play Miss Ross. Now if this was 15 years ago, I would have recommended Terry Ellis from the group, Envogue! She looks alot like Diana Ross and has awesome stage prescence.
OMG.. to whoever brought a Michelle Williams as playing Diana in a movie.. I thought the same think when I recently saw Michelle performing her new single (which i love)she reminds me of Diana!!
I remember this concert in '83, was it HBO? Nonetheless, at the time I thought what a shame, the rain. Now after seeing this video again after all these years, you know what? She was remarkable....and know what else? The rain made that concert memorable and one of a kind. It didn't ruin anything, it made the flowers grow.
@mnmcv1 listen for a mintue i been wanting to say this ever since i was back home in Detroit Michigan Man in blue can you stop right there i know your doing your job just stop right there! thank you! i been dreaming of this moment all my life! Were Being Televised Live! Right now around the world yes Japan France Pick up this concert man these words i will never ever forget i was 13 when she did this concert Live in 1983 Summer! amazing i will never forget the words!
That's really nice of Diana Ross to say out there in the rain, any other singer would just go in. The people there were so lucky to see the show the next day.
So sad for her at first, but this historic event added even more to celebrate her legendary career! Amazing that she could still sing a difficult song so very well under such conditions! ONLY DIANA ROSS!
I was at this historic concert. Like a lot of New Yorkers, I had taken the day off work and I was disappointed that it got rained out, but in the end it was an experience I'll never forget. What a lot of people forget is that this portion of the show took place about 6:30PM in the middle of the summer and the sky was pitch black, like it was nighttime! 30 minutes before it was a hot, sunny day..90 degrees plus. The rain felt great!
That was her friend and producer Barry Diller. The backstage team was getting worried about the safety of the audience and wanted to gradually bring the concert to an end.
I remember watching this as a little girl..I was so sad that she was getting rained on..but, my sister explained that she was happy to continue for her fans..that made me feel better..I love Lady Di!

It started out as a wonderful and all sudden it started raining

What can you say, but she's THE BOSS...MISS DIANA ROSS

i agree with u that Diana is the greatest but the other divas u mentioned r legends in their own right theres no need to talk crap about them
time to grow up

Time to learn how to read and interpret. I did not say anything negative aganist the aforementioned ladies. I, simply, just stated that comparison btw them and Diana are worthless. Diana is on another level. That does not mean the others are not great they are just not DIANA.
jcb0618 3 years ago
that's true. but i also enjoy the other ppl you mentioned at the top of your comment, they are great too

OMG! This changed my life. I was so young when this came on. I'll never forget watching this beautiful woman singing in the rain and promising to come back the next day. I'll love her forever because of this special.

This woman is a DIVA!
How many artist do you think would stand thier happy ass in that rain and perform, plus still sound that good...none comes to mind.
She can to perform and give a show and she did. She even kept her promise and showed up the next day to continue.

A large number of people were viciously mugged and assaulted after the concert ended early due to inclement weather, while trying to get back home.

people say she's such a dive...she was magnificent and selfless and the rain made her immeasurably more beautiful.

Diana is the only artist i know where her live versions of songs are actually beter than the studio ones, i just am amazed by this, id prefer to listen to this then any of her studio stuff, this is so pure she is so talented

I meant, actress. Not actrees...

This may be the greatest concert ever performed by a female artist... think about it

they should make a movie about her life and Michelle Williams from Destiny Child should play her that would be so raw

Wasn't it SelectTV? I remember ordering SelecTV just for this event . . .

I felt so disappointed for her at the 7:56 minute mark.

Thank you for adding this! I've been dying to see this show for YEARS! Love her!

What was that guy whispering in her ear? Was he trying to get her to cancell the show?
bridchelsea 3 years ago
That was her friend and producer Barry Diller. The backstage team was getting worried about the safety of the audience and wanted to gradually bring the concert to an end.
