  • The Hot House Flowers are her backing band on this album. It was a Great Tour !!!

  • Sounds just as FRESH as it did in '94...sad,almost only "aired" on "college radio";we TRiED!!!(Mtl.)

  • Sooooo good.

  • this song is such a joy at her concerts

  • It pays to have a music snob for a brother. I remember him schooling me after finding Suzanne Vega in my collection..."christ, kid, if you're gonna listen to some Baez ripoff, make sure it's worth your time (puts on Texas Campfire songs) that or go steal mom's joni mitchell records! Thanks big brother!

  • the 90's gotta love them great time and great songs

  • Absolutely love it. She has a great voice. An interesting intelligent and original song.

  • Michelle's a genius. Without a doubt. Just listen to any interview. Intelligent, articulate, shrewd.

  • Thank allah for green screens and blue skies

  • d a v i d l y n c h vernacular.

  • So good.

  • My first CD & i like it !Thank's Michelle.

  • She has a way with word and music. I love this woman's work.

  • She picked me out of crowd in Austin to sing the chorus on stage. Too funny. I could not carry a note to the post box. Song quickly became my second fave from her. Anchorage still the best. Hear either on the radio and it makes my day. Thanks to Sharon M in Rochester NY for introducing me to this music 20 years ago!

  • she is special because she has her niche..she copies no one!

  • Lots of Jesus related symbols in this. Was she in to Jesus then too?

  • Timeless...

  • One of those songs you like from the first time you hear it ... infectious, nice beat ... wasn't crazy about the video ... Dennis Quaid riding off with Michelle?

  • 5 People don't know what they're listening to.

  • Best song by Michelle Shocked.

  • Thanks for posting your old videos, Michelle! They are goofy but fun to watch. Nothing beats the images your songs create in my head.

  • that bike and trailor kick ass!!!!! i'm going to see her perform at pershing sqaure in L.A. soon she sounds good :)

  • beautiful women beautiful song beautiful vid

  • one of the few songs i can hear everyday and not get tired of...

  • Hmm she should be much more popular...reminds me slightly of jewel....slightly.

  • @afro20man She used to joke about Jewel back when Jewel was popular.

  • Perfect.

  • Love it, Love you Michelle!

  • Loved this song til I went to LA a couple of years ago and all the lyrics came into context!! Michelle is incredible!!

  • i think this song rocks

  • i think this song rocks

  • Michelle just came to Madison this past weekend, March 5, 2010, to join the "Movement for Worker Rights" Thank You

  • This is one of the best songs (in my opinion) ever recorded -- I know there are a lot of great ones but this is on the list.

  • All of "Arkansas Traveler" is excellent! mshocked thanks for the upload, it is one of the best selections of The afforementioned C.D., Michelle Shocked is an ACE!

  • Michelle Shocked always came across to me as some loony broad who sings eccentric country flavored songs. I was wrong. This is marvelous stuff and she looks like a girl you could have fun with. Lyrics are clever, creative and the music is catchy. Lots more Michelle Shocked music to be bought now.

  • amazing

  • It's funny. In a 'Kids In The Hall' skit, Dave Foley mentioned Tracy Chapman and Michelle Shocked in a rant about folk music and I looked her up and fell in love. She's awesome.

  • I've come a long way... :-)

  • What a ray of light, a truly delightful soul!

  • don't like the video, but as an Angeleno of ten years, this, to me, is the best Los Angeles song ever put to vinyl. Period. Epic American road music with heart, and a distinct sensibility to eschews Hollywood and speaks to the 80% of Angelenos that are ignored by that media world. Simply brilliant and a gift to all of us. Stunning.

  • i love Michelle :-)

  • Classic track, I have always liked this one, it's a really great song to uplift people who have been to hell and back because of depression.

  • @coldrockdaspot Like myself, this great song moves and motivates me so much.

  • Arkansas Traveler is easily one of the best albums based on old American music ever. There no clunkers on this album.

  • Got lost in LA last month ...remembered this song...found it on my MP3...made my tour of LA much more pleasant LOL

    Love you Shel!

  • thanks!!! from LA

  • People can't help but travel as the Earth goes 25.000 miles a day in each rotation and our solar system and our galaxy travel many many times more than that through space each day! Why we're just travelling fools!

  • the last song ever played on LA's Finest Rock FM 101.9 back in the 90's. Remember?

  • Great song, but this has got to be one of the most wretched, embarrassing, God-awful videos ever created.

  • @gigantecrunch

Ah, come on. The video's really fun.

  • @MrClipper23

Agree. I'd much prefer to see her live on an acoustic by the Texas camp fire.

  • When she comin to East Coast? She do need to leave LA

  • Michelles a lesbos lesbian hahaha

  • @frankbough1955 Not to me she aint she a Morman you tarbaby

  • Melora, We dodged the riots in LA in '91, only to have a come to Jesus meeting. You are still my ONLY love and its been 23 years from our start. Love

    Kevin D. B.

  • Melora,

     This is still your song.

    Kevin!!!

  • I first heard this song on KOTR, out of Cambria, CA, in 1991. I've loved Michelle's music ever since. I could never understand her lack of commercial success. Just fickle fate, I guess. Their loss, our gain.

  • Relevant. Folk. Exceptional songwriting..... and those geeky dance moves from a 6 foot body in that effervescent red dress, OH! Michelle! Don't stop! Michelle! I'm so glad you've blessed us and not the record executives.

  • Anyone still searching for great new music in a similar vein should check Freebo (bassplayer who worked with michelle shocked) recent albums, just great folk music and he does amazingly intimate live shows around the country all the time. Check his website freebomusic

  • bonita cancion i love it saludos from here san diego california i will go to see you at belly up concert at march 18!

  • i know she a demacrat--but damn she still hot---all kidding aside a fucking graet song and a nice vid---shes got it

  • I really love this album and im a metalhead!! Lol I heard Michelles Songs In the eighties in Germany long before my friends! Michelle I love you!!!!

  • @morgenauch I'm a Hip Hop head and love this album a lot :)

  • one of my all time favorite albums... bought it for myself on my birthday the year it came out....

  • Michelle's idea to use vast geographical areas without obvious borders in many songs was metaphorically brilliant. 'Anchorage', 'Memories of East Texas'...I miss Michelle's early work. As much as I miss being 21 or so when this came out !

  • @meredumais

i was 19 yea i miss that age too

  • This is nice song. Good feel to the music. Not the same stuff you hear everywhere.

  • now thats real music!

  • Nice!!!

  • @jonburrows

I think the 500 miles represents the spectrum of emotions she (Shelle's poetic persona, not necessarily herself) is going through during a difficult period of her life. So she's using a reality--LA's spread out geography--to reflect an emotional journey within a day of squalor and hardship, and Shelle is trying to have fun with the whole notion of such an experience. I think you are falling to appreciate the campy sensibility of the song.

  • just so goood

  • this song reminds me of Joan Armatrading.... Great tune

  • Chelle, you write some great tunes, I'll tell ya,. Over and above that, I know who your greatest Hero is, and He's mine too. I just luv ya girl. You are one neat lady!

  • I think I prefer the original video although this one does have a certain joie de vivre.

  • this town shakes

  • actually she was THE nicest and the kindest person that I had known in NYC when I lived there years ago.

  • I was very good friends with her about 20 years ago and have lost touch with her. she is very talented and one of the very nicest friends I had in NYC.

    Rock on Michelle!

  • womens got soul

  • awesome talented artist, first heard her on hober c o m been in love since

  • have no idea who she is but fucking great song and vid---bravo!!!!!!!

  • First heard this driving across NC from TN in the middle of the night[WNCW], been addicted to Michelle ever since.

  • Wow - flashback to me at seven years old driving to Tyler Arboretum after church with my dad and sister...

  • She's straight. This was a big deal a while back. Some people thought she was gay, and she objected, as homosexuality is not looked upon well by her church. Can't speak for her, but that was what was in the media.

  • straight

  • One of my favourite songs - who on earth could write a road song about LA? Cheap clip unfortunately

  • love this song

  • i like this video, have never seen it. love the song. talented lady.

  • Too great to be true. Been listening to this song for some 15 years now and it never ceases to amaze.

  • Heard it on the radio in London today. Never heard of Michelle Shocked.

    Like the lyrics.

  • The city of LA is big but LA County is freakin' huge. This song is just about perfect.

  • u go girl!! xxx

  • I HEART L.A.!!

  • this video is pretty silly lol :) best song ever

  • My favorate song of all time. I can listen to this over and over and never get tired of it. I love that small trailer. Do they actually make those that small?

  • The whole Arkansas Traveler album just gets better with each play - and this is one of the highlights. Not sure about the video - the song conjures up such strong images without having them shattered by reality.

  • Yeah great album, magic picture of LA, reality of LA not so impressive

  • Folk in A! This is Bellissimo!

  • Great song, Shocked is so animated. Can someone confirm that that is Uncle Tupelo backing her up.

  • i love this song

  • It doesn't get much better than this, although as an album I love 'Mexican Standoff' - there ain't nothing but top tunes on it.

  • Michelle, You have been with me through good times and bad, for over twenty years. you are the constant in an ever changing world. thank you again, for all that you have given this world. I always smile when I hear this one...

  • I don't find many great songs these days and I know it's not new but this is fantastic, made my day!!

  • This is such a lovely song. Shocked's cheerful catalog of a day's event in L.A.... I have been checking on Youtube for years to see if this song had been posted. Thank you.

  • i adore this song.

    Los Angeles es mi madre.

  • I lost my soul mate outside LA (and I was just visiting) north of Moro Bay (during the 92 riots) and Michelle was playing. Sad day.

  • Great song!

But my all time favorite are the Campfire Tapes. ;)

  • michelle, so glad you released this one!

It's such a great ole song.

    Thank you!

  • Michelle Shocked "Come A Long Way: "kicked in his door at 5 AM "I've come for my bike" I told the repo man My 920's gonna take me far today You can travel for miles and never leave L.A. I've come a long way I've come a long way I've gone 500 miles today I've come a long way I've come along way And never even left L.A."
  • I used to come home late at night, and crank this song up to 11 and sing along at the top of my voice. Poor neighbors, but I don't care this song is just so uplifting you cant help but just belt it out.

  • who's the guy in the video?

  • i made a mixed tape back in the days when i didn't own an mp3-player. the mixed tape was exclusively for travelling at night time and this song was my choice for opening track - and for inishing track :-)

  • I love this song. It just really carries you along.

  • What a song!

  • i remember michelle at the birchmere with guy clark, sonny landreth and allen toussaint-- and at george mason university with taj mahal when uncle tupelo didnt show-- and at the old 9:30 club in dc-- great memories

  • Great video for a great song. Thanks!

  • Your songs really rocked my soul fore ever!

  • When I had to drive out of Alaska, after my so called Mr. Perfect broke my heart, this was the only music i could tolerate, it gave me the strength to keep going, drive 3,000 miles through my tears. Michelle, you rock and I thank you

  • I saw Michelle way back, at Newcastle's Riverside club. She brought her parents! I was right at the front, was one of the most intimate gigs I've ever been to. And one of the best.

    Memories.

  • Your a great singer & a really cute gal, a very original artist. I'm putting you in my favotites with Bob Dylan, another original.

  • Great song! Try listening to the Charlie Daniels Band and Michelle Shocked back to back. Christ, my brain jangles

  • This song used to get huge airplay on CD101 in Columbus OH when I was a kid. I bought the CD. Very cool song. This is the first time I have seen the video. Nice that you are really on a Virago in the vid.

  • i just left that area from hocking hills ohio camping when i first heard her first song i ever heard was prodigal daughter :)

  • The Hocking Hills area is awesome for motorcycle riding. I miss living in Ohio.

  • The Spanish Pescado mojado me encontre apparantly translates as "I came in as wetback" i.e. an illegal immigrant

  • - hey farmer...you've been livin' here all your life?

    - .......not yet!

  • LOL! You are a true Shocked fan!

  • What a great song. All the LA landmarks ... reminds me of the time I spent in LA. The time was short and LA goes on forever!

  • Good music, cute vid.

    Norteno accordion nice touch.

    How about some "Blackberry Jam?"

  • iam a guy who likes this music and iam not gay is that wrong]

  • Hey mshocked, thank you, such a good song, in Australia we would say "daghtyuiore tloghfre"

which means "I think i just shat my pants"

  • You told me I have nice eyes in Chicago!

  • Hi Chelle, thanks for posting this. I've always been partial to Ark Trav but I own it all and luv it all. Just so ya know your songs have brought me great great joy. The chugging and churning of this one from 2:10 to 3:00 always brings a smile to my face. I was driving along the Great River Road in Alton Ill the first time I listened to Ark Trav - will I ever forget that? Thanks again.

  • Michelle Shocked brilliant - makes me wish I was born in East Texas

  • My absolute favourite song. I even learned to play it on my ukulele. My dream is to ride my bike on tour of the LA spots mentioned in the song. And what does the Spanish mean?

  • Hey Chel...I grew up in rural East Texas too and moved away. Everytime I hear this song, it reminds me that I have indeed "Come A Long Way". Thanks

  • so awesome i luv u meeshie :0)

  • This is one of the coolest vids I ever saw! You look so cute, Chell! The red dress is gorgeous, the dancing so cool! GEIL!
