Michelle Shocked always came across to me as some loony broad who sings eccentric country flavored songs. I was wrong. This is marvelous stuff and she looks like a girl you could have fun with. Lyrics are clever, creative and the music is catchy. Lots more Michelle Shocked music to be bought now.

don't like the video, but as an Angeleno of ten years, this, to me, is the best Los Angeles song ever put to vinyl. Period. I think the 500 miles represents the spectrum of emotions she (Shelle's poetic persona, not necessarily herself) is going through during a difficult period of her life. So she's using a reality--LA's spread out geography--to reflect an emotional journey within a day of squalor and hardship, and Shelle is trying to have fun with the whole notion of such an experience. I think you are falling to appreciate the campy sensibility of the song.
