@aviomaster Chernobyl(notice how thats spelled) is in Ukraine. It still DOESN'T produce electricity as the last reactor still online was decommissioned on Dec 15, 2000. Iran is also not not pursing the same design. They are using the much safer VVER Russian reactor design. All four reactors at Chernobyl were the RMBK reactors. Stop spreading ignorance and fear. At a minimum at research whatever you are posting about in a encyclopedia/wikipedia before you continue posting lies.
The February 2010 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine has a good article on this disaster. Interestingly, the 10 turbines had a 30-year design life. the one that failed was 29 years 10 months old.
BigBananaMan --- Chernobyl nuclear power plant was not safe design ,
Accident happened casue stuff did not practice safe working temperature , REad a bit more ,, NOW NEW nuclear power plants in IRAN and couple have been build in CHINA ,Russia , Bulgaria are safest in the world.... BULGARIA today runs Chernobyl design , Nuclear power plant , and it did not explode ... OK ...
The French are the masters of nuclear power. Older soviet designs that the countries you listed use are NOT safe. Any older reators were retrofitted after the accident but are still no where near as safe as a modern reactor.
Why is it that Russia has such brilliant physicists and chemists but has always been so lacking in engineering. Leading to many catastrophic accidents like this one, Chernobyl, numerous Mayak accidents larger than Chernobyl, submarines, rockets, etc.
Stefan Timoshenko was a Russian engineer who immigrated to the US after the Revolution. A brilliant engineer, his 70 year old textbooks are still considered valuable references.
cute .. like your clip .. keep it up =)

It's not always so much engineering as maintenance. Though I too must confess; all the Russian engineers I know now live in America.

Well, that's russian "technological thought" + lack of maintenance + incompetent employees.
Just like at Chernobyl 23 years ago - nothing has changed...
