This is my inspiration. I have a 5.2 L 96. Im really torn on what to do. I have 170k miles but my tranny slips like a mother. I have to wait till it finally gives out before i can get a new one. My rents won't let me mod mine >.< Already have all my gear bought fml
do you tow with your jeep? i have one the same year as yours but with an I6 engine and the trany got torn up after towing my boat....the boat only weighs around 3,000 with trailer and everything...i also tow with overdrive off
The Inline 6 has a 42re, which is a super light duty transmission not ment for towing really. If your transmission got torn up with only 3k miles, either it was worn out already and it just wasnt showing it yet. Or you didnt have a aux transmission cooler and you burned it up.
The V8's have 44re and 46re's more heavy duty compared to a 42
@1ownjoo2 o ok that explains it then... i did have the aux transmission cooler and it's not a small one. its one of those huge heavy duty ones but like you said the transmission is light duty. i've got the truck to 150,000k miles and a good portion was towing but i've also had it's tranny rebuilt 3 times lol
Yea on Jeeps forums ppl will tell you the 42RE is a pretty weak transmission needing rebuilt pretty early even without towing.. I dunno if i believe that because we have a 98 4.0 and the thing has 172k miles and it hasnt been rebuilt and runs great. I wouldnt tow anymore then 3500 lbs on a 4.0 tho, and since ours has 172k miles i dunno if i would tow with that at all.
I have a 5.9 Grand cherokee with 123k and wouldnt think twice about towing 5-6k with it tho
If your transmission has been rebuilt that many times that is a alot.. When you had it rebuilt did you have them rebuilt it with stronger parts ? I think its always a good idea to have it rebuilt with stronger parts then just have it done with stock stuff. That or get a good strong transmission from a reputible company like Jasper or something (altho that can be expensive)
However 3 times man.. sounds like those shops did shitty jobs to me.
@1ownjoo2 yea it is alot of times but i think the reason was that they just used stock parts and they weren't holding up. and every time they charged me $1700. this time i'm taking my truck to this place called level 10 in NJ and they do the best transmission rebuilds from what i've heard. there is another level 10 in easton, pa and they're the fake company and don't do good rebuilds so if you ever need any tranny parts don't go there.
@1ownjoo2 this tranny rebuild will cost me $3,000 but i think it's worth it because the engine is like new even after 150,000 miles and i like this jeep alot. i really don't like the new v6 motors. my uncle got a brand new jeep grand cherokee but i don't like the v6 sound. there's nothing like the older i6 motors and the v8 motors. they both have a deep rumble that i don't hear on the new v6's.
@1ownjoo2 yea i agree with you on that. this jeep sounds really sick. and about my tranny, i called alison but they don't make transmissions for my jeep and they told me the smallest transmissions they do are ones for chevy pick ups....and what's your opinion on Jasper? i could get a brand new one for about $2,500 but i'm worried about the quality of the tranny because on google they don't seem to have great reviews.
This is like a fart can on a Honda Civic... only difference being that the Honda has serious aftermarket potential and can go faster than your Jeep. What a sad V8 Chrysler put in there :(
Really now ? Lets compare same year vehicles here. For one a civic is smaller, lower profile, and weighs 1k pounds less, its more aerodynamic then a ZJ Grand Cherokee which is a big box on wheels sitting 15 inchs off the ground.
Now lets compare them stock to stock. A civic is slower on 0-60 and quarter mile. Aftermarket potential ? Do you not know anything about magnum engine's ? Look up 5.9's on dragstrips and come back to me
I absolutely know about Magnum engines. Check my page. I have lots of videos up of ZJs. Mine, my friends, etc. I had mine supercharged. I had two other friends with superchargers as well. One guy, we helped build his motor a few times and eventually it was a 410ci on about 12psi of supercharger boost :) And guess what, he could only run high 12s. For something that he put $30,000 into, it wasn't very fast. It couldn't even break 400whp on the dyno. I'm sorry, but no, Chrysler has no aftermarket.
Also, the best video i could find for a civic was a heavily modd'd civic hatchback SI 93, doing 11.3 on the 1/4 at a drag strip. Thats fast, but it was bored out, with a turbo and had tons of other mods i dont care to talk about. Lets go to a stroked out 5.9 408 cubic inchs for example.. add a supercharger... There is no way your civic would stand a chance, and besides again were talking low profile, less weight, smaller car vs a heavy box on wheels. Quit trollin
Let me first just say that I am no fan of import rice mobiles. I love domestic V8s. But I can respect a fast car when I see one. I would never own a Civic, god no. But I have seen them run 9s and 10s all the time at the track. Just search for it, since you obviously didn't try very hard. I just watched a few 8 second passes, as well as a 6 second pass too. Show me a video of a fast ZJ. You can't. I know of ONE 10 second 408'd ZJ, and he was running a 75 shot of NOS. That's sad.
I'm going to go right ahead and say it again, a ZJ is box on wheels with too much ground clearance and weight to be really raced anyway. You comparing a ball of paper to a ball of steel... End of discussion. Put that ricer engine in a ZJ and i garuntee you it wouldnt be getting 9s lol
Yea, and it can make 2000x the horsepower. You are seriously a moron. Fuck a Civic. But I'm telling you, I owned a 5.9 supercharged Jeep and I know just about every single person in the country who has a decently fast 5.9. In fact, one of the fastest guys we knew just had the 5.2! He was boosted at like 15psi, but he was running purely on meth at that point lol. Oh yea, and he rans 12s and 11s. Show me some 1000whp 5.9 Magnum condom motors from mother mopar
You must be drunk or something.. If you owned a Magnum, then why are going on blabbering about no aftermarket for the engine ? The Magnums are actually one of the easiest engines too mod.. much more so then the newer 4.7's and 5.7's. Im still wondering tho why your comparing a vehicle that weighs 4300lbs to a civic that weighs 2500. Thats like comparing a 5.9 Jeep to a quad cab pickup with a better engine.. The Jeep is gun win cause of WEIGHT.
It is exactly why I owned a Magnum that I am able to blabber on about no aftermarket. BECAUSE THERE IS NONE you fucktard. Jesus christ man, what other cars have you owned in your life? If you think the Magnum has an aftermarket, you have never opened a fucking Jegs catalog for example. What do you see? Nothing but pages and pages of FORD and CHEVY shit, nothing from Mother Mopar and all her glory *cough*. If you want Mopar power, you have to revert back to carb, not EFI
Other cars, well there is the 75 chevy chevelle with the 350 small block that i work on also, but anyway im done with you. Your reverting to crusing now which tells me i already broke you.. You dont have that much tolerance for an argument do you ?
and your right i actually was reading that magazine helping my buddy out tonight.. But name something that you cant do to a mopar engine ? While i agree the newer engines there isnt that much for like the 5.7 and 4.7 or the 6.1 and 6.4 but the older ones there is plenty.
A good example of this being the vehicle i raced the other day. A Land Rover with the 5.0 V8 supercharged. 510HP, 640lbs of torque.. He beat me by only 1 car length on the 1/4 mile, and 0-60 i had him on almost a full car length.. You wanna know why my stock 5.9 did that ? Because he weighs 1300lbs more then me.
A civic is shit plain and simple. Sure you can get the engine to screaming speeds but the vehicle is only fast because it weighs 1 ton, HP isnt everything
so does the flow cat make any difference on the sound? cause im looking towards of getting one on my super 44 5.2L grand cherokee, but just want to know if will be worth it?
hey man im pretty sure this is the same jeep i saw with the blue led interior lights and they chrome headlights if it is im just wondering where i can get these from it looks awsome
sweet, i plan on builing up my zj a little with a cat back exhaust, high flow cat. converter, cold air intake, a small lift kit and some 30 inch tires. as well as a few other things.
This may be a stupid question, but do you think that the 5.2's in the Grand Cherokee's are really good in acceleration? I think that they are decent on like 0-60 acceleration, but from like 55 or 60- 80, there like beasts! They have alot of high end torque i think. But the low end torque is ok....what do you think??

hey, looking back would you go with the super 44 again? just bought headers, wont be running a cat, 3 inch pipe . Can't decide which flowmaster to run. thx
how bad is the interior resonance? i also have a dodge diesel with a 6 inch turbo back, with a glass pack, and right around cruising rpm (1800), the tone in the cab is so loud and deep you cant hear your self think. thx
John, this sounds amazing. I ordered my exhaust from Kolak, but he convinced me to go with the 50 muffler lol. Should be here next week! CarCrazyMike82, you can dual ZJ's. Its a bit of work, but possible.
