Another thing, the world that Ponyo creates is phenomenal. It's a little harbor town and by the movie's end, you actually know the spacial layout of the town. You know that Saske's house is on the hill and that past the ship crossing is the elder's home, right next to the school. You learn to love the town and the people in it. That's a sign of a truly spectacular movie.
You can tell that this town was taken from one of the creator's childhood. It's given such realism and it's so romanticized.
I just watched Ponyo and it exceeded all of my expectations. It was fantastic and better in my opinion than Spirited Away. Of the Studio Ghibli films that I've seen, I'll put them in order of how much I liked them:
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Ponyo
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
You might think it's surprising to see Spirited Away not make the top of the list, but in my opinion it just isn't as enjoyable as the other films. All films are great, but Kiki's had magic to it.
omg thank u for posting this i think ponyo. is the best thing ever to and thank u for hoo maid ponyo. i love ponyo and whats ponyos dads name? and hoo ever doesent like ponyo is crasy right
Ponyo’s father was a man (also wizard) and her mother was a goddess, making her a demigoddess. Her actions resurrected hundreds, possibly thousands of extinct species; increased the gravitational pull between the earth and the moon, causing the oceans to rise at least a hundred feet flooding countless cities in the eastern hemisphere, and we are expected to believe that there was actually a happy ending? I’m curious to see what happened next. How long until Ponyo gets dissected? Just a thought.
woohooo ponyos father or fujimoto!! hes so crazy looking like yobaba from spirited aweay lol youll find etleast one character like that in every movie of his!! ^^
Ponyo is like Studio Ghibli's version of The Little Mermaid. When I first saw Ponyo, I instantly loved it. It has to be in my top 3 or 5 best Studio Ghibli films list ever.
Ponyo was great. I really liked it; however, I disagree with you about it being easy as pie to understand.
Also something that drove me crazy about Ponyo was that it didn't explain somethings. Some things are left open-ended. For instance, Fujimoto says he was once a human himself. What?!?! That needed more explanation. Other than those few details, I loved it.
And Ponyo is so much cuter than WallE. If WallE is a 8 out of 10, Ponyo is a 100. :)

@michaeljacksonyall just because something is 'everywhere' doesn't mean it's true. He did say that, yes, but there was no reason for him to stop making films. He said this after the release of 'Tales from Earthsea', his son Goro's first film. After he got crucified by some film critics, I guess he figured that the world still needs him, and his son is still not a worthy successor. I may be wrong, but this is the most recent news..
@Sakura06Chan .....I do not remember where I heard this, but I believe it's true. Repeat: Miyazaki is not done. He may take a break, but not done. I'm sorry if you need proof, but I know this is not a 'rumour.' There are upcoming films from Ghibli: The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, for one, and another on the way.
@michaeljacksonyall Agreed. Miyazaki's "lighter" films, Ponyo/Cliff ,Totoro and Howl weren't as good as Mononoke or Nausicaa or Castle/Sky. ALL of Ghibli's films are awesome, but Ponyo isn't my fave Miyazaki film. Disney cut corners on dubbing. Watch it a few more times, compare it to Mononoke, which is not dubbed by Disney, and compare. : ) it's a great movie to cheer you up, though.
have you seen Castle in the Sky ("Laputa")? That movie is so epic, that I still haven't found an equivalent. It's not as popular as Mononoke and Spirited Away, but really, it's STILL my favourite film of all time. Disney did an awesome job of dubbing it, surprise surprise.
Kiki's delivery service is my favourite Ghibli film - but it's really childish and im 14 now, but i still loved Ponyo best film i've seen this year and probably last year too. I thought it was quite long though, at that scene where the mother was sleeping, my 14 yyear old friend said ' Why did he kill his mum?' Howl's moving castle was great too (especially Calcifer) but im too young to have gone to the cinema release of it and still remember. :(
Actually, it's "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" when directly translated from Japanese. But the US release is just called "Ponyo", and the version I saw was the French dub, titled "Ponyo sur la Falaise". Not that anyone actually cares.
totally agree! brilliant, refreshing retelling of little mermaid as miyazaki centers on the purity and faith of childhood. artistry and poetry are both genius and magical! utter beauty and simplicity! a must see and a collector's item! another instant classic!
i just saw the film...the animation was good..but the movie IS intended for kids..it was too cotten candi and bubble gum. it was i litle boring for me but a great kids movie....for kids. my friends saw it and it was boring. shod have seen the tim travalers wife. lol
Personally I think a lot of kids' media is very impressive and shouldn't be underestimated. When I watched this film I felt like I was a kid again and was whisked away by it! I'd say the film is intended for kids AND anyone who wants to be a kid again ;)
But everyone has different tastes, and if it didn't match yours that's fine. At least you gave it a shot :)
i really wanna see it cuz of noah cyrus and frankie jonas and cuz its from miyasaki! but im afraid it'd b weird to go see a little kids movie... and none of my young relatives are interested... im like FUDGEEE
Haha, you should go see it anyway. I'm 14 and I loved it!! :3 Me and my friend went and we were the only people in there that wasn't 5 years old or a parent of one of the 5 year olds. LOL Seriously, it was awesome for a kids movie. Miyasaki is a genius!!<3
They really are great films. I especially like Spirited Away, but there's so many classics in Ghibli's library, it's too hard to choose a favourite ;)
I've watched all of hiyao miyazakis films and so far I'm a big fan of his movies! And I think ponyo will be another one of hiyao miyazakis great movies! x]
Awesome ;) I've still got a few Miyazaki films that I haven't seen yet, but I would definitely say this film is well up to the standard of his others :)
