Was with tiscali for a year, I was suppose to be on 8meg, between 1am and 10am it was fine, 10-3pm I would get about 1/4 of that speed, then between 3pm and 1am I would get about a 20th of the speed and they'd bandwidth shape me so much I couldn't even go on xfire, MSN or play any games at all (not because of a bad ping, but it literally wouldn't literally let me connect to anythng).

I had the same problem last year. Upgraded from 1 meg to up to 8 meg and nothing but slow speeds, evenings and weekends being the worse. Left after 8 months of trying to sort it. Basically it is too many customers on their service.

December moved to Talk Talk and straight away speeds just under 7 meg. A couple of months later after a disconnection they put us on ADSL2 as our line was too good and trip out. Noise Margin went above 30. Speeds now around 9 meg all of the time.

Tiscali is such a crap ISP. Don't use it, switched from AOL and didn't really worry about internet speed until getting with Tiscali. They cap internet speed between peak hours. I can't even game now because speed is VERY BAD. 8mb? More like 0.2

If you're thinking of getting Tiscali's 8Mb deal,DON'T BOTHER. It's crap. Firstly, no-one gets 8MB. I'm on ADSL and live less than half a mile from the exchange. I get 5MB, max. Try watching Youtube vids between 4PM and 1AM. You can't because Tiscali throttles all traffic it sees as P2P between those hours including Youtube! You can't game, downloading speeds are a joke and streaming vids is pointless. Then there's all the dropouts. Your connection just dies for no reason sometimes for hours.

SNR is usually in the high teens, over 10db is great for dsl max. IT ONLY HAS TO BE ABOVE 6 TO WORK!

I get 8megs in the morning and with BT I have always had 8megs.

Now I have threatend to take them to court its 8 megs except between 7 & 9 when it drops to 4.

IT ONLY HAS TO BE ABOVE 6DB for ADSL MAX.

Above 10 is Great. remember 3 DB increase is logarithmic the SNR. so 12DB a hell of a lot better than 6DB though 6DB is still great!

Update.

Funny, I have just written to Tiscali, threatening taking them to the small claims court for breach of contract, I now get the full 6 megs in the evening!

I can finally watch youtube in the evening. (my video btw)

I spent nearly 4 months on the phone arguing with tiscali as I could never get connected although i was 8mb unlimited i could barely get 2mb when i did get connected....finally got sick of them and switched to O2 on the 20mb package..and guess what? i get those 20mb perfectly now...and for the exact same price tiscali were charging!
