I really want this camera, the vg20. What lens was on it? Does it come with it when purchased or did you guys just throw it on there, its a beauty ! PLEASE RESPOND =] cheers
XLR input. Actually it would be of little use on a camera like this. If sound is that important you shouldn't be using the built in sound anyway. A pro videographer would be using a separate sound recorder, not the one in the camera.
@jamm521 If you have a chance to use the camera, try holding the camera on the top handle with one hand, and press the record button. At worst it's impossible, at best, it's uncomfortable.
I am looking at the VG 20 versus Canon XA 10, I want beautiful depth of field for a documentary. What are your thoughts? I would add what needs to be added to the VG20 for the extra sound.
@rouxrubin1977 nex-vg20 will give you more flexibility and DOF.
some extra price for other lenses will role in over time but the kit lens will serve you well for a while but just keep the idea of future lenses in mind.
Hey great review, Just a comparison question, sony x700 , compact (great for travelling and slightly cheaper) versus VG20, bulkier but it comes with E 18-200mm lens and its only $200-$300 more than x700. Im no film maker but want really nice video ...I just dont want to carry it around on holiday if its heavy and bulky and a burden, Any thoughts?
Chris, great video! If this is really you wife and kids you all did a really great job. Quick question. What microphone were you using to shoot this video? I am doing real estate videos and this is just what I am looking for.
@fatcat752 We used a Rode Lavalier mic, transmitted with a Sennheiser G3 transmitter. For audio of Meagan, I had a Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic, with a WS-6 Deadcat.
Question! I'm using a canon 60d, I intend on buying the body for this camera so i can save myself some money, just one thing, is there adaptors from canon af mounts to the sony e mounts? It would save me alot of time and money, thanks!
@estrellasdeljaripeo1 For video, definitely the VG20. It has a much better mic, more comfortable form factor, and support for E mount lenses, which will let you auto focus and select any aperture.

@TheCameraStoreTV bro, 1.4; 1.8; 2,8 etc aperture compatible with autofocus in this cam? in A77\65 diafragm with autofocus locked on 3.5 or smaller.. sucks =(
and crop factor in this cam locked, as 1.8 in video mode? or with OFF incam digital steady crop will 1.5? I want a wiiiide wiiiide angle with Tokina 116 =)
I have been thinking about getting the NEX-VG20 for a few weeks but I was curious what you would advise. Im in my first year of film school and was wondering what you think would be a good "pro summer" camcorder, the $2,200 for the VG20 is about the max I'm willing to spend. I mostly do documentary and music videos. Ive found tons of buyers guides but they are all for lower end consumer camcorders. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I'd like to see an image stabilizer built in eventually, Great vid told me what I wanted to know, currently I have 2 Canon HF-G10's and and a Canon T3i from this I've decided not to change for the simple reason that I wouldn't gain much in my case.
@slow758 Depends on your priority. The NEX-7 is a much better still camera, but it lacks a headphone jack, audio control, and the much nicer video handling of the VG20.
How do you think the video quality compares to the other DSLRs like the 5d (or the m4/3 GH2 hacked)? Sharpness? Low light sensitivity? Latitude in bright light?
For non-narrative work is the VG20 a lot easier to use than DSLR (or GH2)? I'm thinking here of changing iso/gain, aperature, WB while in the field filming.
How'd you like it compared to the AF100 (both in terms of quality and ease of use for more run and gun applications)? Or can they be compared?
Hi Today i bought this vg 20 happy atlast watching ur video well actualy cause of ur clean video i got interested on this vg 20 , well my question how can i get 5.1 sound do i need to recored at the maximum speed like fullhd? or medium ?*
I love sony, but their VG product line is a not to my liking. I love the big sensor idea, and I love the whole idea of putting on nikon prime lenses, but, it still seems like just any other handycam. Maybe I am not giving this camera any justice, but I have yet to see a video that compels me to believe that they have taken this dslr killer seriously. I know the fs100 and the fs3 are great, but too pricey for you hobbiest.
The MANUAL button can be set as a dedicated gain button. It'll be the same way how the iris and shutter are controlled. And that top record button is for the handle held application, and a dedicated record button placed right for the thumb.
Curious to know tho, you mentioned you can't change the aperture off from F3.5. This only applies to using alpha lenses?
@fugzed That's true about the manual button, but it's still clunky. I prefer the way it was set up on the VG10, with all exposure controls in the same place. As far as the second record button, I found it extremely difficult to press from the top handle.
As mentioned in the video, the F3.5 limitation is only in effect when using autofocus with the LA-EA2 adaptor.
@nazhif1 As mentioned in the video, the VG20 adds 24P and 60P framerates, a 16MP sensor that is better in low light, manual audio control, a touch screen, focus expansion, and the new AVCHD 2.0 Codec.
La ea2 can't get apeture off 3.5? Here's from Sony...Aperture is set to F3.5 when you record movies with autofocusing. When you are using a lens with an F3.5 or smaller F-stop, aperture is set to the maximum F-stop of the lens. When you want to set your own value for aperture to record movies, select [Aperture Priority] or [Manual Exposure] in [Shoot Mode], and select manual focusing.
@videohog222 As mentioned in the video, it is only when using phase detect auto focus that aperture is locked. If you plan to use Alpha lenses in manual focus mode, why buy the expensive LA-EA2 adaptor?
Does the NEX adapter allow for flipping down the translucent mirror? I.E So you could add a follow focus ring (or teach myself to do it by hand) while still having that amazing ISO capability?
Judging by the small video sample you provided, I did not see any benefits compared to a regular 1/3-inch or 1/4-inch consumer camera. DOF? Not that shallow. Resolution? Average. Skew and jello? Less than on the 5D/7D, but more than on a small-chip camcorder. Would like to see a comparison with the GH2.
really hope that the whole thing with the family was a joke, you have a very pretty wife and a cute kid and you should really appreciate your family and spend time with them while you can.
@white8ass8kika Gain is the video term for boosting the sensitivity of the sensor. In a digital stills camera, this function would be referred to as ISO.
@TheCameraStoreTV Ok thanks. If you want manual control you can set the iso before taking the video or use auto. Don't see why you would get this over the nex-5n. has 1080p 60fps too and you can get a mic attachment
Great video guys, and also for those who want them to go back to the 5D mkII, Chris's shirt would have had horrible moire, great review guys and very funny! You have an awesome family!
I've seen other adapters for Sony Alfa that might be better. There is a company called novoflex and another company called Bower that built the aperture rings into the adapter.
Also Philip Bloom just had a write up about EOS lens on the Sony Alfa and Panasonic Micro 4/3 with a new electronic adapter.
I made a special effort to check out the Camera Store (I am from out of province) and it was a great experience. Super helpful and friendly staff. I will have no problems ordering my equipment from these folks.

Good (funny) review too. Footage of the VG20 looks fine. The camera does have some shortcomings but overall (if I was in the market for a vidcam of in the VG20's range) I would pick one up. I'm also a long time Sony handycam user so I might be a little biased there. :D
@Ipad2Adventures I love the form factor, and the images look lovely. It does seem a little pricey, especially without 1080/60P for overcranking. I'll be interested to see a production unit.
