  • My favorite Oldfield album.

  • HUAU QUE DEMONIO DE ESPIRITU TIENES MIKE PARA CREAR ESTA MARAVILLA

  • bransons a tit,if he had released ommadawn right after tubular bells, just think how big mike oldfield would be now,.

  • hAVEN'T SEEN THE COMMENT WHERE IT SAYS THAT THIS SONG IS PLAYED REVERSE ! yES, LISTEN WELL ! aND NOW I WANT TO HEAR THIS REVERSE PLAYED SONG " REVERSE " ! sO THIS SHOULD GET US TO THE ORIGINAL TUNE ! =)

  • incredible music

  • I never grow tired of M.O. I listen to his albums most of the time and I have a lot of his albums.I think he is the greatest. Also I think Incantations Which was another of his

better albums.I did not like tube/bells at first but it grew on me and was hooked on his works.I mainly listen to his early music rather than the later works, but I would rather listen to him than anybody else

  • I never grow tired of M.O. I listen to his albums most of the time and I have a lot of his albums.

  • My hubbie and I had this on perpetual loop. Side one and two, then Tubular Bells. It didn't matter which was on we thought they were all brilliant. Hope he is listening to it now in heaven.

  • I think this is bloody brilliant.

  • the early Mike Oldfield (before he became too commercial); a composer and musician in a class of its own.

  • I dont knoe which one is the most popular.. guess it´s tubulars bells. But in my opinion, Amarok it´s the most complete and inspiring album. Ofcourse I also love Ommadawn, Hergest Rigde, Incantations, etc., etc. I also think Mike should have stopped playing music after voyager, but... anyway.

  • I agree almost completely with you, Amarok is my favourite, and also love hergest Ridge, Bells and Ommadawn. I'd add Five Miles Out to the great collection and maybe Discovery. However I disagree with Incantations (to me a deception, but accepting the version from the Space Movie, which I find better than the original).

  • @gajo04 it was a dissapointment to me too.. but I listened to incantations again after many years cos i had forgotten how it was and re-discovered the beauty of part 3. Part 1 is too repetitive. Same problem with part4 and specially part2. But part 3 has a few awesome guitar solos in my opinion... that´s why decided to purpusely mention it before the "etc." hahaha. But i fact i like all of mikes albums,.. some more some less, but its like a family. You always have a favourite but love them all.

  • ´xcellent ! The Hertfordshire Regiment is stationed there and you must go up the Hergest Ridge ! I went up some ridges in Wales and Mt: Snowdon. There you get some perspective ....

  • i love this song :)

  • Hergest Ridge is one of my fav's!!!

  • Very nice video to fit the music.Well done.

  • I like the name "purplefurball". Very cute! See comments a few months back.

  • Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge, Bells, Incantations are just great ;)

  • Awesome stuff. My friend was a fan of this stuff and introduced me to it and he died today. RIP John.

  • Mr Oldfield's best album in my opinion.

I love all of them till Crises...

    but this one is special.

    Thanks, trichoone

  • THis is actually my favorite Mike Oldfield piece. The opening motif is one of the most haunting ever composed.

  • I am very dated I had this on cassette...before there were written records....it is a classic thanx

  • love the video, music from oldfield, enginering, and arcitecture as well as scotland and the sea......what a fantasic combination!!! thanx

  • None of albums after TB was popular even next versions, but every of these forgotten albums is good by itself. HR is very good example :) Thanks for sharing:)

  • I loved this one but loved Ommadawn even more when it came out.

  • Jedna z najwspanialszych płyt w historii muzyki...

  • 2:24 haaha, 4mph lol

  • I love the way this leaps out of its box and races off.

  • The drumming section on Ommadawn will always be my favourite Oldfield moment but all three of his first albums were awesome - Platinum was the big let-down for me.

  • Favourite album, indeed! Makes me calm, makes me free. Wanna more, Mike!

  • his music, specially his early work makes me think of being in the country, outdoors. He paints beautiful pictures with his music

  • I always thought there was something gloriously insane about this part of Hergest Ridge. It's probably one of the great underrated masterpieces of the 20th Century, although I think Ommadawn is the greatest album ever made.

  • I love this album! Still got it but nothing to play it on!

  • Wow, love how enigmatic this is!

  • I have commented this video before (but it was some time ago) - but Im still a bit astounded by how well it works and just wanted to re-assure you that this is damn near a masterpiece when it comes to "fanvideo" - although this is to intelligent to be put in that category if you ask me. Someone stated that the pacing of the film should fit the music more, but actually I think thats the obvious way to go - the contrast between the tempo in the images and the music is what makes it. Good work.

  • Simplemente me encanta Hergest Ridge, sobre todo esta parte, la "Tormenta Electrica". Uno de mis deseos es hacer el amor escuchando estos 7 geniales minutos.

  • can you imagine how big he'd be if he had brought out ommadawn right after tubular bells?branson missed out big time there!

  • I thought 'Hergest Ridge'was as good as 'Bells' ,I used to shoot up and play this album a lot.

Ommadawn was the big letdown (in my humble opinion)

  • hi Paul its the other way round with me Hergest ridge a massive disappointment coming on the back of Bells Ommadawn getting him in the right groove again anyway what do we know turned out his entire work was fantastic --trich .

  • @trichoone I agree with Paul. Hergest Ridge did it for me much more that Ommadawn. Still, we all have our tastes and I'm not knocking yours.

  • @trichoone I think all his first 3 albums were awesome. May fave was HR then Ommadawn, HR being my favourite album of all time by anyone.

  • @trichoone snap! but this is so good. never got into H R album. though used to enjoy going there for walks because Mike named an album after it. (The dairy farm there does the best milk ever). Ps: did you make this video??? this is the most magicwhack I've got from youtube in ages! nice work! makes me want to give the album another go. i can see why i maybe didn't dig it as much as Ommadawn when I was a kid.

  • tastes are tastes... but for me Ommadawn was a masterpiece, some of his best guitar moments are there along with a very balanced album

just ear the guitar scream in agony on the first part.. emmerse yourself in the spirit of the woods and let yourself go

  • Comment removed

  • @PAULLONDEN I liked all of his early stuff, especially 'Ommadawn'

  • @PAULLONDEN what? ommadawn is, in my opinion, oldfield's masterpiece.

  • @PAULLONDEN - Hergest is pretty mellow. I think side 1 is stronger than side 2. It was never going to match Tubular Bells which is a complete masterpiece. Ommadawn is a great LP. love the fast guitar solo near the end of side 1. I love mikes guitar sound from the 70's and mid 80's then he lost the agressive tone by TB2. Great musician though. Not many could write music like his first 4 Lps today!

  • Trainthesizer

  • whos letting these morons fill up the comment boxes?

  • I like it but I was expecting the trains to start going mental at the point the music kicks of - big roaring steam trains etc. If you can do that I would be impressed.

  • by the way, if anyone is feeling a little glum then you should go to hergerst ridge, and take this albumn with you. And in the solitute, listen to this music while looking at the countryside. That heals you big time.

thus, if anyone is feeling glum, to Hergerst rideg you shold come. Even better, go on horseback.

  • @Simon0 where is it? do i need to spell it right?

  • This part always made me think would make The of the end of the world theme tune!!! Chaos!! Video not doomsday enough tho!!? Sorry? Good try tho!!

  • thanks - best part of the LP

  • nice thanks

  • I love this part, "The Storm"

  • The only way really to appreciate 'Hergest Ridge' is actually to walk this beautiful hill on the Herefordshire /Radnorshire border I was fortunate enough to see Mike and Sally flying his quarter size remote control glider near the top of this lovely hill many years ago. From the start of the hill walk it takes the time to play side 1, and walk down to side 2, you have heard this piece of music in it's true element. Hergest is a place where Mike Oldfield's music really comes to life.

  • just like Blain Mono from King's Dark Tower : ]

  • thai's good , man ; ]

  • It is as good as Ommadawn or Tubular Bells. Hergest Ridge is one of the most underrated Oldfield's works.

  • right !

  • Grande Mike ^_^

  • auf mer orgel hört sich das sooooo geil an.......

    da natürlich auch^^

  • hey man, don't be so hard! He really tried to do something other people may like

  • nosnikna ... you need a doc !

  • very very nice excellent mike oldfield is another great musician 50 stars *****

  • cuts off too short :( the guitar is really really as shrek would say :)

  • where it ends is what counts with the really nice and tunefull guitar that just sets you free to wander the fields and clap sheep :) listen :)

  • Exelent! This guittars talk!

  • Excelente tema, muy profundo, con una melodia espectacular. Hergest Ridge, la segunda gran obra de Mike Oldfiled

  • Wow! I haven't heard this in over 30 years... must dig out my HG LP! THANKS, and yes the train thing is good!

  • Is this from the lp version? It sounds "fuller" than the cd one which I own.

  • yes .

  • Thanks a lot, man! I missed listening to that. I have the "Hergest Ridge" CD but I have always preferred the original LP mix, which he sadly discarded, reputedly disenchanted with the criticism.

  • @trichoone Amazing. I'd only previously heard the CD which used the Virgin 'Boxed' mix... that left the choir out and even his recent remaster leaves it out too... an artistic decision perhaps, but this original mix sounds far superior to these ears.

  • @trichoone

    The choir... oh, the choir... ;_;

  • They used to play what I think was an MO clip on ABC (Australia). It had three segments, an arial pan past Mt Rushmore, a gymnast dancing, and someone playing guitar. I can hear the riffs, but never knew the name of the piece. You wouldn't have a clue what it was? Might not have been MO at all?

BTW, I grew up with MO. Loved Hergest Ridge, dubbed it to tape to preserve the vinyl. Also loved Ommadawn, five miles out, & discovery, as long as I didn't listen to the lyrics too hard.

  • this is the only section of Hergest ridge i dont like (the noisy bit). The rest rocks.

Not to say i dont like noisy parts, but i just dont liek this particular part.

  • Proto-black metal?

  • parallel fifths... still don't know if i love them or hate them!

  • You do know? that was 42 guitars over dubbed?

Mike Oldfield is a British music master.

  • Subject: the changing weather - dire media

Anagram: cad - green - hit - met - hid wear a hinge

  • I love this - Hergest Ridge is like a modern day pastoral symphony...

  • nothing wrong with Scotland ;)

  • Now I know what to do: Get the Hergest Ridge vinyl album as soon as possible!

  • Why all the pics of Scotland when Hergest Ridge is in the Welsh Borders??

  • I think the pictures and scenes of moving trains are good, but I don't like those still images or images without movement ;) cause hergest ridge is quite powerful at this point

  • this is cool

  • ooooooooh wicked!!!!

  • I love the album Hergest Ridge, one of Mike's best works along with Ommadawn and Tubular Bells. Works well with the steam locomotive, I love steam engines, they're living breathing beings to me. You can see them working more so than with diesels.

  • This (his) music is like a free association peice that went very well :)

  • Wow! A great piece of music. I didn't listen nothing of Hergest ridge before have seen this video. This part is really beautiful

  • and now you know glad you liked it .

  • You did manage to slice the most exciting part of Hergest Ridge here. The rest of the album, I'm sad to say, is a solution for insomniacs who don't respond to strong drugs. Ommadawn and Amarock are much better.

  • WORD !!! ;-)

  • Realmente bueno, me encanta Hergest Ridge, para mí esa fue su mejor época, con discos como Onmadawn, Crises y muchos otros.

Sin duda, el maestro Mike Oldfield..

  • Why do I feel that Hergest Ridge is Mike's best Album. I can FEEL it but I can't articulate why ??

  • I love hergest ridge. I know EVERYTHING from mike and the part from 0:58 is one of the best parts he has ever written (in my opinion :D )

  • Great. Hergest Ridge may not be the most polular, but certainly one of the best Oldfield albums, if not the best. Mike is a genius especially in his young years.

  • Thanks for the video. What is the source of the recording? It's not the same as what I've been listening to in Canada for 30 years. I naturally think my familiar version is better. It's purer. This version has more "clutter". That's not to say it's not fantastic, of course. It's still Mike, and one of his best.

  • i like this record verry much this is just the best piece of the record

  • It's a great sound. Always was gonna be a hard act to follow coming on the heels of TB but it still carries it's own qualities and Hergest Ridge is a real place. It sits in the farthest part of west Herefordshire bang on the border with Wales (Powys) overlooking the A44.

  • Maxi the original on the thick vinal is the best and the most rewarding too! love this piece and the guitar piece when it ends is brilliant just reminds me of better times eh! makes me smile !

  • thanks donalfonso8 glad you liked it .

  • Nicely done!

  • thankyou .

  • Your video has encouraged me to go and buy the CD!

  • thats good and it shows you tube that this vid thing works both ways by introducing more music to more people thanks and enjoy .

  • Great song but even greater video!

  • Stunning on any format, I have had lP and cd vesions

  • yeah the quad and remix versions are like "flat" sounding..same with TB and Ommadawn

  • the original stereo mix is so beautiful, the cd version (quad) is better edited, smoother, but just seems to lose the original charm

  • I have loved this ever since I bought a four LP set. What is better, it has only ever been played one, when recorded it. I did this to preserve the original. I cannot believe the recordings are still going strong; I must have done a good job back in 1983 for them to last.

    Lucky me!!!

  • That was great tri, HR is wonderful! Your vid matched up great. Side one next?

  • Does anybody where can I find HR in vynil? I had an 8track cartridge and the sound was amazing. Sadly, I lost that cartridge and though I found the song in CD,the sound on the CD is not as good. I've been waiting for years (really, years) to have the chance to listen to this masterpiece again. My favourite part? ALL OF IT!!! Never get tired of it.

  • hi rockbeat not sure where you would find it now on vinyl apart from second hand shops and car boots etc , you certainly cant have mine ( only joking my friend )hope it turns up for you -trichoone .

  • I have it!!

  • You do? I was thinking about going to some flea markets just to see if I could find it. I think it's one of the greatest songs of all times. Too bad it lasts only 40 minutes.

  • I have a vinyl of "Hergest Ridge". Lucky I found it. It's in an okay condition too. Very minor skips.

  • Well, I have it twice, from Boxed and on the separate lp. How do we copy it???

  • hey Maxiclaudi where are you...I have both too AND a CD recorder! Message me if u want :)

  • Still love this version. Have Hergest Ridge as original album, as well as the Boxed version, as well as the CD. I must be old???

  • Frenetic

  • thanky again for this kind post,,,any chance of spreading the good word of the deep excellence of part one of this fine album?

  • Wow - I really like this video, somehow it feels very Oldfield in some strange way. The colors almost make the landscape seems like a train model. Hard to really describe the feeling, but it works very well.

  • thanks glad you liked it - trichoone .

  • The mix wich is heard here, where is it from?

The only version of hergest ridge I posess is the one, wich can be found in the boxed 4 CD box, but it doesn't quite sound like this one.

Can't tell why, but the mix in the video somehow annoys me. Can't tell why. Maybe because I'm used to the only one I know.

  • this one came from the original vinyl album .

  • I have the first edition Virgin album and it's much better than any cd. Hergest Ridge lost so much after Mike Oldfield remixed in quad for the 4 album "Boxed" in 1976.

    Great video and music !

  • m'yea

  • my first and viciously underrated piece...nostalgia-city for me...

  • yeah it had a hard time following in the footsteps of tubular bells .

  • The only part i dont like is the end,

I DONT WANT IT TO STOP!!!

glorious madness, upp the volume, piss of the neighbours, great stuff.

  • I just love it

  • Yeah the mix on the vinyl is a lot different than the CD. I have this record, the only mike one I have on vinyl (I'm young!) and this part is muffled. There are a lot of synth parts missing from the CD version. I like this album a lot. I like all of Mike's work from Tubular Bells up to Discovery. That's all prime material, as far as I'm concerned.

  • mike Oldfield is an amazing musician i saw him live in the seventies and wow hooked or what and thankgod for Tubular Bells a taste of things to come , and age dosent matter if its good music who cares what age you are .

  • For me first 4 Oldfield's albums are the "real ones". I grew listening to Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations. What came later had number of gems, but it was very much hit production. Not my cup of tea. Thank for posting it! HR is very underrated album.

  • Yes i think i agree with most of what you say and Hergest Ridge well it had a real fight on its hands following Tubular Bells didn't it .

  • I'm sworn Oldfield's fan bu I think he was directed by his manager(s) towards easylistening music instead of being "progressive" in what he was doing. If you have a possibility try to listen to Tubular Bells i SACD version (5.1 remastering). I discovered it again hearing things I couldn't catch on stereo although I heard it over 1000 times :)

  • Couldnt agree more with that statement

  • I Love Hergest Ridge... fear, hypnotize !!

  • vastly underrated album but very good i think, following on from tb difficult to follow that success, the creative peak being ommadawn in the 70s.

  • hergest ridge-classic.great vid m8.

  • Hergest Ridge is a wonderfully surreal album. Unfortunately,I have to say that this particular section you've used,is my least favourite. It has novelty depending on my mood, but soon wears thin. For me,part one of Hergest Ridge is "perfect" and Part two is so so. I agree with others though, that your LP version sound radically different from the CD version.

  • im a great fan of late romantic classical music, but some of the music in hergest ridge transcends a lot of that stuff for me. there is a moment where i think a cor anglais takes over a melody on side one that is simply heavenly. i had a music tutor who listened to "tubular bells" and then announced to us - "no therapeutic value whatsoever!". maybe he should give this a go. just wonderful, timeless melodies.

  • I think i am changing my view on Hergest Ridge i was always under the impression it was not one of the most favoured but the feed back i am getting is changing that .

  • HR is my favourite album of all time.

  • As a Scot who loves Mike Oldfield's music, this was a treat. Slightly cheesy (I live in Edinburgh, I see it every day) but wonderful nonetheless.

    Bravo!

  • Thanks , i'll tell you something living there you may take it for granted as i do were I live but I love Scotland , Hergest Ridge seemed to fit well with the motion of the train .

  • I used to go to school near there. Queensferry High.

  • I keep coming back to this when I'm down. It makes me happy.

By the way - which version of HR is this? I don't recall the vocals being so beautifully prominent?

  • this is from the original vinyl LP.

  • Storm Guitars!

    IMPRESSIVE!!!

  • Thanks .

  • Thanks

  • superb pairing
