I've seen concrete floors in multimillion dollar homes that were absolute works of art. It seems to be more popular in warmer climates for obvious reasons.
Also, you have to pay for the labor of waiting for things to dry. So this is one handyman project that I figure you actually could come out ahead on.
Apparently there is a concrete compound available at Home Depot that can be used to fill the tack holes and will accept stain. My understanding is that it will accept stain differently than the rest of the concrete, but it will accept it. We are in the middle of staining our basement and decided not to fill the holes (wife just wanted basement done.)
very informative video! thank you for your trouble! no others have actually broken it down so clearly!!
now that i've seen the real work that goes into this project, i've got a new perspective and i know i couldn't actually do this by myself. my (wall ) painting skills just ain't gonna cut it with this job! lol :)
What kind of Acrylic stain do you use? Where can it be found? I've done acid stain on my basement floors and it didn't take very well in some areas so I'm going to do a faux finish as well to correct it.
My ex-contractor left stain on my floor, it's been almost 6 months w/o applying the glossy top coat. If I decide to finish it myself what do you suggest I do before applying the top protectant coat?
Gosh that seems super complicated to do it ourselfs but if I would get an estimate from men that do that, would it be very expensive to get that on a driveway? How many days does it take to be done with that?
I wanted to see if this same finish could be done outside around my pool. Do you think this would hold up in the weather and sun? Also, what would you do differently if you were to do a pool deck?
Our pool deck has 15-20 cracks going across it, and it needs so much cleaning from mold and dirt every year. I'm hoping this will be a solution to our maintance.
Can you do this around a pool deck? Do you think it would hold up, or fade pretty quickly? What would you do different if you were doing a pool deck? Our pool deck is in dyer need. It's cracked and needs mold and dirt cleaned off every year.
The acid in the stain is diluted enough that there is almost zero volatility. It is less harmful than most household cleaners. And yes, osha would probably fine us and shut us down had this been a contracted job subject to osha inspection. But anyone who has dealt with osha knows that they have become nothing more than another tool the gov't uses to suck money out of the private sector.
@ davidloveco ask the pro's, Acid stain is now being banned for inside use. It's messey and volitile. Would you have acid stain done inside your home? (maybe a new under construction home) Try and wet sand inside your nice home or clean off the acid overspray on your counters and cabinets. Plus if Osha saw these guys without resperators they would be shut down!! Did'nt you think the preperation was lenthly? Again I stress...even to the homeowners GET EDUCATED!! go to the home shows educate.
I have in fact been the the concrete business for over 25 years..acid stains are on the way out. Outdoor applications still are functional. Any old concrete can be cleaned yes and an overlay may be the answer. There are just too many new products around now that are safe and are not harmful.. Get to the conventions like the world of concrete shows. It's an eye opener.
Acid stains are a pain..There are many water based transparent stains available now. Ducks back has Masons Select , and H&C has nice products. They all look and are are as durable as acids. Don't bother with all the prep. Your clear coat makes all the real difference.
@Tyrantblood Wow. Are you purposely trying to give bad advice? Unless your concrete is brand spanking new, the prep/cleaning is easily the most important step. Acid stains a pain? You literally spray it on w a pump spray and let it dry. How difficult!
@Tyrantblood how dare you come on their video comments and knock their technique when the results are stunning. I would hire them after watching how they are through and went the extra mile to ensure good results. You and your new products spamming this guys page. Rude. "New - Quick - Easy" doesn't always mean better and there are always different ways to do things. I'd almost bet you've only done your own do it at home project if that. Spammer.
When you did the ragging technique for the faux finish did you rinse or just let it dry and then apply sealer? I faux finish walls and would like to try this in my own family room floor.
Hi, after Step 4 when you put the 50% diluted stain on with a rag...did you just let it dry before you went onto step 5? Or did you have to neutralize it, and mop/wet vac it up?
I really like the outcome of this floor. And I'm thinking I want something similar for my house :)
How long did this take you? Is this an all day project or an all week project? I'm thinking of doing my downstairs like this with slightly different colors.
This is a two to four day project, depending on the size of the floor. You can get all the prep and staining done in one long day, but the floor needs plenty of time to dry before sealer can be applied.
What kind of stain did you used for this project? And where can I buy it?

If your poolside is cracked or spalled, an epoxy overlay, than a stain would be my recommendation.
