@LunarMonkey Sync sound back then was a lot more expensive... the only single system cameras used either an optical or magnetic head inside. The Mag head cameras used single perf Ektachrome film with a magnetic stripe along the non-perfed edge... cameras were either Auricon or Frezzolini. Used for news.
Old Hollywood had a certain class about it - unlike the trashy people they have now with all the sensationalism, fake bodies and self-importance. I hate the so-called "reality" shows today because there is nothing at all real about any of the people who take part in them. This footage is natural, innoffensive and wonderfully relaxed. Love it and thank you!
What a life! sun, surf, hot dogs, and beer. Mr. Dunne, of course, wrote a book about his life in H'wood which is de rigeur for anyone interested in getting the inside look at H'wood in the 60's--and in a favorite chapter when he featured Roddy's photos and descriptions of R.
's parties. I put two and two together when I first saw these clips--"Oh yeah, Roddy's parties--in Dunne's book!"
@windstorm1000 You got it! I actually ran into Mr. Dunne at the general store in Old Lyme, CT on New Year's Eve in 2006... said hello and wished him a happy new one... we had already contacted him about our footage and he was considering being a part of the production as narrator. But we couldn't get A&E or any other network to buy the show! Can you believe it?
@windstorm1000 They actually told us that "no one is interested in Old Hollywood anymore". My God... that's why A&E and the History Channel is making those awful Pawn Shop, Mini Storage Wars, Ice Road Truckers and Tattoo parlor series! Yuck. The bean counters... we only have footage from this one summer of 1965- it was all that Roddy offered us. Don't know if he continued to shoot movies after this time- or if he felt that this was the best of his work and wanted this showcased?
@soapbxprod Are they nucking futs??? There is plenty of interest in classic film and an era of elegance--gad knowsthese days its the WalMart look down the street in every hamlet in this country. My working mother wore a Hepburn dress, string of faux pearls & cool hat with white gloves for CHURCH! Who wouldn't want to see that look (let alone rest) and remind ourselves that this was a great looking country once!!! Bring the movies back as a reminder. Then go shop people--please!
First of all I love the back and forth commentary being presented here. And Yes, I love old Hollywood!! These clips are a treasure, seeing some of my favorite actors growing up in a very relaxed and candid way is priceless. How wonderful it would be if you came across more of Roddy's home movies. I have to get Mr. Dunne's book!
@brooklynborn81 Thanks dear friend! Probably not likely re Roddy's footage- his entire archive is sealed per stipulation in his will... until 2098! Dom Dunne wrote a number of great books, but two come to mind- The Way We Lived Then and People Like Us...
@calalilygirl My favorite movie star of all time... been in LOVE with her since these films were shot- I was 5 in 1965 and still remember going to the movies with my parents to see West Side Story...
@bcheatham1964 You're welcome! Please look at our other clips here on our channel- there's some great Natalie Wood clips- especially shooting "Inside Daisy Clover" on the Santa Monica Pier!
@soapbxprod His name is Ladslavik Blatnik. He was engaged to her in '65. The following year she met Richard Gregson. They had a brief marriage in the early '70s, that produced a daughter. 3 months after divorcing Gregson, she remarried Wagner.
@soapbxprod Did I see somewhere that you're Abner Boberman's grandson- "Lefty" from the Roaring Twenties? He sho0uld never have taken his eye off Cagney. I always thought he resembled Edward G. Robinson.
@44032 You got it boss! Loved it when Cagney used him as a human shield to fight his way out of Bogey's lair in the last great scene when he dies on the church steps... Abner was also Clifford Odets' roommate while he was writing Waiting for Lefty! And my great uncle was Herbert Biberman- one of the Hollywood ten,
@TJamesBell That's a good guess..and he does favor him somewhat, but unless Rene was a complete idiot and didn't care if anyone saw him kissing Natalie, IMDB says he was married in 1963. I tried to find some younger photos of Renee online, but didn't see any.

Whats amazing about these videos is they're so brilliantly verite, you really feel like "one of the gan" just hanging out in Roddy's back yard. The fact that the film quality is pristine only makes the whole thing more immersive.
it's a shame there's no audio; I love Natalie Wood's voice.
