@saltedcod1 Wynton had a feel unlike anyone I've ever heard and such lyricism. I always wonder how Wynton would have played Jamaican music. Imagine 'Wynton Kelly plays Studio One'? That would have been very special.
this is my favorite "Softly". See? that beautiful block chords Kelly does. That 's Wynton Kelly. and I like the way he use scales in his improvisation so naturally. And listen him so beautifully sing this song with his piano!
I would NEVER mistake this for Jamal - its pure Wynton Kelly all the way - he was a major influence, in his own right, on other pianists. Kelly had a very special way of swinging and in the way he blended bop lines with a bluesy, gospel flavor. Miles said you could light your cigarette on his groove.
@92ninersboy Actual quote: "Wynton's the light for a cigarette. He lights the fire and he keeps it going. Without him there's no smoking." …at least according to jazzprofiles at blogspot But I like your version better.
@92ninersboy Yes, definitely Wynton and Ahmad Jamal have their own distinct styles. Yet I think Jamal's 'less is more' concept of the piano trio certainly influenced many pianists who followed, such as Red Garland and I do hear it in Wynton's block chording. Though as I say, each of them are clearly recognisable. Ahmad Jamal himself comes out of the Errol Garner school. The lineage of jazz piano is a family tree.
@415BAY415 Yes, I agree with you on the shared Nat Cole influence. It's a similar bright touch with their single note lines and an indefinable 'bounce' to their respective ways of playing.

@ImaniHekima Don't you think that Garland, Kelly and Jamal all come out of Nat Cole That's one influence they share.

@415BAY415 I'd also say Basie's use of space must be an influence.
