  • wait ... you don't lose mony for buildings?

  • decent, whats the progress on this? its been about 3 yrs since this video

  • what graphics engine was this game on and is it free?

  • Maybe stupid question.

But how long is this source code?

Just to have an idea, for my own programs

  • yea red alert was the greatest game of all time i got red alert 3 for ps3 but it does not come clost to the rush that i got when i played the classic on my first computer a a child.. ahh those days of smashing the allied forces with v2 rockets :)

  • wait what engine is this using??

  • make one with a sidebar for symbian 3 and i'll marry you

  • Its kinda like c&c generals with the bottom bar and workers, i liked the idea of it but many people moaned about the bottom bar lol

  • Whoever disliked the video needs to build this game in javascript see how he or she does it

  • @11JohnThomas11 Java != Javascript

  • @RyanfaeScotland everyone knows that

  • Mind if I ask how did you make the camera to pan?

  • @birdmanpete14 make it tomato sauce in the future and we have a winner winner chickin dinner

    also: G UNIT, FIDDY CENT

  • wow thats amazing can we download the source anywhere

  • Hey, a quick question, a few friends of mine are trying to make an rts game in java, any tips or anything, id appriciate it

  • @wsbarth92 I know this wasn't aimed at me but I'll give a quick thought anyway. If you aren't too bothered about low level stuff like how the background is drawn, how scrolling is handled and so on then check out the Golden T Game Engine, it handles all that for you and allows you to focus on making the actual game.

  • yo cool game...can u let me know if u use any kind of IDE to program this game?

  • @opslon Nope not IDE - Crimson Editor !!!

  • May I have the source please??

  • Really nice... I'm working on a similar project but am having a little trouble with unit/collision detection. I know buildings fit into precise grids/squares. How do you handle unit moving/placing? When I move units on a pixel level, handling unit collision and movement becomes a nightmare... Would appreciate any advice or reference material that you found helpful.....

  • @adityaravishankar I hear ya. Basically each unit knows what tile it is on, and each tile knows what unit/s are on it. When a unit moves from tile to tile (a "path" from the pathfinding algorithm), before it moves onto a tile, if that tile is empty, the unit "claims" it (so that if another unit comes and tries to move into it - it will know another unit is moving onto it), and then moves onto it -as it does, it "free"s the tile it was just on. I

f the tile is occupied, just path around it etc!

  • @birdmanpete14 Because of the way I am moving the units right now, sometimes a unit is on multiple tiles... And if I block four tiles at a time it gets a little clunky navigating around it. Especially when navigating thru bottlenecks. Check out the demo on my site. Let me know what you think about how I can improve it... ... Its HTML5, and works on Chrome or Firefox; I've posted a video demo on my profile and the game URL in the video details... .

  • You've done a really good job :)

  • @Yezu666 Thanks

  • @birdmanpete14

Good job man , and ra1 is an awesome game.

Learning java as well, might soon attempt to make a simple game.

  • Hey man that's amazing, when will you provide us the code for some analyses?

Can you, please, send me an email with the project?

    See ya.

  • Wow! I'm amazed. I love this! I'm tried for years to try and develop something like this, but you're just too good! BIRDMANPETE14 YOU ARE MY HERO! If i could meet you and you could teach me this - I would be the luckiest person in the world.

Thank you so much for creating this - it was an honour to be able to watch it.

  • OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA IT CANT BE MY FAVOURITE GAME!!!!

  • Try OpenRA, just googel it.

Its also a C&C RA and C&C TC clone with orginal models sound and its Multiplayer :D

    openra(dot)res0l(dot)net

  • Nice dude ... no .... FANTASTIC ! Holly shit this is in Java ?! Is this a one man production ? ...and YES Red Alert is the best RTS !

  • How much time did this take you to build?

  • Help what proggrame should i use to make those kinda buildings?

  • @GSMILEZ360 Well I just ripped them straight from the original RA .mix files

  • wow its great :D

  • Any idea when this will be O.S.ed?

  • nice. I used to play red alert all the time, I watched for, what, 20 seconds, and here is my face:

    : - O

  • Did you build this game using a Java IDE or text editor and how long did it take you.

  • Sell it on steam Xd I would buy it!

  • WOW!!! amazing game i'm learning java btw also awesome artwork

  • WOW!!! amazing game i'm learning java btw also awesome artwork

  • Cool :) your units and buildings are well designed. I like java things :]

  • God! I've been trying to make it work on my windows 7 machine, without luck so far. Followed a few tutorials, but it doesn't let me start the setup >:C , maybe 64bit has something to do with it... Watching this is torture! I want.. no... I NEED to play this again :3

  • Where's the source?

  • Amazing!@!@! I remember playing Red Alert since I was 6!!!

  • Wow that's totally amazing! I loved Red Alert and this sure brings back some memorys, even if it isn't the actual game!

You should totally combine Red Alert II and Generals to make some awesome game.

  • awesome! how many did it take to learn and make that game?

  • What is the name musics pls ? :-)

  • Holy shit you're remaking the best game ever and it looks authentic :O

You should really consider getting an artist to help you add in more units, make RA1 even better. But make sure it's not shit upgrades like a super-mammoth tank. It has to have the balance that starcraft has.

  • I want to make a game just so I can be crap at it :)

Don't take this the wrong way though! You were great at yours!

  • This may be the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Any chance of you releasing some binarys in the near future? :)

  • Is this open source yet, I'd love to peek into it. ^^ I am just beginning with java, but I have some experience in a java-ish language.

So basically I would appreciate it if you could send me the source-code and stuff somehow.

    Regards,

  • @JelleCreate Edit: Not so I can copy it, just want to see how a more complicated code looks like and this one seems interesting. xD

  • Great game! Out of sheer curiosity how much lines of code did this take all together?:P

  • Very VERY impressive...

I'm having a hard time studying for java right now... queues and stacks.. so.. LOL

    Congrats, loooks good

  • That is very impressive. What application did you use for the animations?

  • D: I was gonna remake red alert but I couldn't find any downloads for the sprites.

  • That is like totally amazing, i cant believe it

  • @Javier2910 you speak the truth !

  • This, best sir, looks Epic.

  • @88Cortex =D

  • Really like how you made the engineers create the buildings :-) Did you use any frameworks for this game, or did you build it up from scratch?

  • @MischievousGoat All from scratch :D, took a while!

  • You can give me the source please?

  • @JavaDevolopper2 It will probably be made open source in the future.

  • Looks really impressive. GJ.

I would like to ask, how do you handle selection.

Is each unit a separate swing component which uses action listener to know when it has been selected, or do you record position of clicks on a screen and then the game tries to find a corresponding unit?

Or maybe some other technique? Thx for your reply

  • @Swato007 The latter technique. I record each click on the screen and the game then finds corresponding unit =).

  • looks awesome, how long have you been writing this? did you code it all yourself or in a team? do you have a dog or a cat?

  • @QwAdr0x256 Started writing it a few years ago all by myself, back when I was starting to learn to program.

  • do you have any website ??? awsome work

  • @umingo Not yet :( - but in the future probably

  • You seem to have made a mistake there... Red Alert was released in 1996. The epic game released in 1995 was the first Command & Conquer :p

  • are you planning to open source this? or is this just your pet project that is going to stay private. it would be a pity you know. there are current projects out there trying to clone the game and have not gone as far as you did.

  • Amazing.

  • well done! whcih engine did you use? or have you written your own?

  • @hardcoregamer3 All from scratch :D

  • Hi :) My java skills are pretty good. I can make pretty good 2d platformers etc and have recently been trying to make an rts. I have really struggled with this :P Are there any guides/code that helped you in writing this?

  • @Stuart36543 hey there are plenty of resources out there that are useful for developing an rts! Type 'A* pathfinding beginners' into google (youtube wouldn't let me link for some reason), and its the first link. This site was very useful for understanding tile-based pathfinding!!

  • Reminds me of starcraft and majesty XD

  • I'm a Java game developer myself and that very impressive work, keep up the good work.

  • Great job :)

  • Nice stuff.. real nice!!!

  • can i download this pls?

  • @0902studios Its not finished yet :(

  • it s possible to have a beta to test it and see if possible to make a server online with your java game to play around the world ,my idea is to put your game in java on PHP server with Base SQL to save point and make an international game .if you are agree to give a beta to see your game and work on server php go to warofgenerals on web

    thank's

  • @birdmanpete14 Would their be any chance of releasing a source for this? If not publicly then privately? I'm currently working on a Java course at my college. Really interested in looking at how you put all of this together!

  • @birdmanpete14 ohh..then pls update me if its done.. ill be downloading it :)

  • @0902studios ok!

  • @birdmanpete14

you could make a "beta" ro even alpha lol

    anyways im impressed ;)

  • @Xortrox thanks

  • can you send me this game?

  • @arcijs26 Haha, its not finished just yet :P

  • How long did it take for you to make? I mean like in terms of hours... Haha...

I'm planning on making a game like this too... :P

  • @seokkyu7 I'm not sure...but a lot! it takes a lot longer than you think :P

  • @birdmanpete14 do you know how long it took you, judging by the game complexity it seems like a few months maybe a year but plz answer

  • How did you make this? I am teaching myself Java and to me the GUI doesn't look really good but here, it looks awesome!

  • @ra4king The GUI you see is all programmed by myself :P, it doesnt use any swing components for the GUI

  • Wow! :D

  • AAAAAAAWSOME!

  • @shiizoo Thanks! :P

  • Greatest soundtrack ever.

  • I am not a huge fan of the micromanage building system, but that is just being nitpicky. The original RA game just made it so you built units faster as you build more of that construction facility, you make some sort of queue and reemployment that system, you could come up with a system that requires very little micromanagement (if you had the units list always displayed on the screen or something).

  • As for that bottom bar.... I really think you should make it a side bar, most people have widescreen, and if this game is going to be able to facilitate those people a lot of them will not want a huge portion of the screen to be taken up by a bar that half empty whenever a construction facility is not selected.

Besides that it looks great, I wish you luck on your project, and make sure to post a link when it releases!

  • very nice‼

is there any websites you can give me

to learn more about making java games?

  • Hi. Excellent work. Congrtas. but you should change the name dude. Or you may face some copyright problems. Call it JRed Alert, Java Red, Operation J or something that still mades homage to the RED ALERT game but clearly shows IS NOT Red Alert.

  • just wondering, ive been seeing some of your comments, and just wanted to ask how you were making out with this, great game. looks awsome, i'd deff play it

  • Awesome how did you make this?

  • That is VERY impressive stuff! Me likey.

  • Very interesting, i'd definitely give this a whirl when its released.

  • This looks awesome, congratulations on that

  • good job! .... I really like it .

  • sweeet man, gr8 work!

  • wow man is this only java? i mean 100% java???? its a great inspiration for us who are thinking about learning java!

  • How many months do you spend to complete this game?

    Nice work buddy!

  • sexy game

  • How do you get sounds to work in your Java game? I've tried everything, but i can't get it to work!

  • I forgot to ask in my last comment but, how did you get a hold of the sprites? Did you extract them yourself somehow or did you find them online?

  • @AbstractRS I extracted them myself. Yeah, Red Alert 1 was awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • Really nice work man I hope you're still working on it. This is a nice tribute to such a legendary game. Red Alert 1 is the only RTS I got into -- great times playing on mPlayer and gamespy :D

  • it looks like you have the entire architecture indeed, I'm super impressed !

You could tun this as an authoritative server on GAP and have 20+ players at once :)

  • hi man i search this as a long time !

how to download this package ?

it s possible for me to put on my website this package to download it for all users ...

    warofgenerals website

contact me or send me a email

  • Awesome!!!

  • You know... I really like this O.o Making it look like Starcraft-ish kinda did the trick xD Though, I'm always gonna love the original :P

This is pretty well done, mate :D Like'd!

  • @Coresk Thanks :D

  • are you gonna release this to the public anytime so we can test/play it?

  • @xxbluejay21 Of course. Just been a little busy on other stuff lately, but I will get back to it soon.

  • wow.. awesole!

this makes me want to play Red Alert again xD

  • first off... this is awesome! I have been programing in JAVA for a good year now, my best game so far is a Galaga spin off! It is amazing that you were able to make this complicated of a game run so smoothly. You have inspired me to follow in your footsteps, its time to move on from 2D polygon graphics! If you could help me out by explaining your thought process... for example all the different classes that I will need to have, how things should be organized, etc. Again awesome man!

  • This looks cool, maybe not the same as the original, but just as good, maybe even better! The only thing I can strongly suggest, is making the Function keys (f1-f12) useful. So when you click on a structure, you can press these to build something. In addition, the ability to select all units on screen, map, or of a single selected type. So select one mammoth and click a button to select all on screen, then again for all on map.

    Great Job!

  • Awesome job. Congrats!

  • forget it, found it. it's the soundtrack for red alert 2. the name of the first one is "Hell March 2" for anyone who wanted to know ;)

  • @windextube Sure is! :D

  • dude awesome job!

what's the name of the song?

  • Great job, you are awesome ;D !

  • Nice !

  • wow. i'd really like to play this when its done. Red Alert was a part of my childhood. And its such BS to try to get old games to run.

  • man is this your game? please answer i would like to know it!!!!! its awesome!

  • @Simunic95

    Thanks.

Yes it is my game :D

  • im inspired to learn java now :O i wanted it but didnt saw anything that i could do with it... great job!!!

  • im sorry to be boring, but please can you tell me how long did you learn java and how much time this took to you? can i buy/download game anywhere? did you created that graphic or some other artist? thank you very much

  • nice

  • Very good progress. Where did you get the graphics from though? :D

  • @phytra From the original red alert .mix files :P

  • @birdmanpete14 Ah, so what do you do with frames? Simply one at a time? ^^ Like when you have a character walking etc.

  • @phytra Yep!

  • Quite simply amazing. Just disappointed the starcraft element was thrown in there. Would have loved to simply see RA1 ported into java with all the bugs fixed.

    I can dream :)

  • neat.

    Which frameworks have you used?

  • @DeathFilip

I'm not sure what you mean by 'frameworks', but I only used the jdk 1.5.

  • ok, so no framework.

    Thx for reply.

Could you tell me some info about implementation? How many Classes did you use, do you have any diagrams...

  • @birdmanpete14 what APi did you use for the graphics gui etc, Swing, awt, or downloaded a 2d engine?

  • Wow! Very cool. This takes me back...

  • Alright, so I'm taking a course on Java and was wondering aboot how many classes do you have and examples of what a few do?

    That would help meh wonders

  • Actually, RA1 was released in 1996... the "95" in "RA95" is simply to discerm between the DOS version (RA.exe) and the Win95 version (RA95.exe).

Though I have to agree one of the best games ever was released in 1995... but that was the ORIGINAL Command & Conquer :p

  • Erp!

    You are right :P.

Oh I knew the "95" in "RA95" was the windows 95 version, but I still thought it was released in 1995...oh well :P.

  • Heh. Actually, even C&C1 was released in the second half of 1995. End of august, IIRC.

  • Looks great! I hope you implement a mode where the construction yard system can be used! Also I think you should replace the RADOS icons with the RA95 icons.

  • Hahaha yeah the RA95 icons are much better, but while its being developed I just went for those because they were different to what I was used to.

Implementing the original mode is not something I was going to do, but it wouldn't be hard, so having a choice between the two will probably be in the final game.

  • I also noticed Tore made a news post about this! :D

  • Cool!

    Thankyou Tore!

  • great work!

  • thanks!

  • I've played it, it's really good!

  • This looks good, nice job. How long did it take you to make?

  • I started making it a little over a year ago.

But I mean, I'd just started to learn programming back then, and I was only casually doing this for a long period :P.

  • Cool man.

    Casually, ok.

I'm starting to consitently put about 10 hours a night into programming after I get off from work, So i guess it's possible to make something like this in maybe a few months or less.

  • Absolutely!

    Go for it !

    Good luck!

  • Thanks :-)

  • God I love holidays from uni, let's you learn the computer stuff your actually interested in!

Just got onto the last chapter of Beginning Java Game Programming by J Harbour and it's been really good although it is aimed at applets and not applications but still learnt a lot.

Can I ask are you using the files that came with C&C to take the graphics from or have you removed them some how?

  • I used the program "XCC Mixer" to open the .mix files that the C&C graphics are in.

The format of the graphics are .shp (shapefile) and I extracted and converted them to .png format with the XCC program.

    - Simple :D.

So yeah I'm not using those files, I've just removed them.

  • I thought that would be the graphics since they're name winterterain and so on (or something like that)

Would you believe I threw out my copy of C&C First Decade?!! I was copying a CD for work and it kept failing so I had about 4 dead disks I just threw in the bin not relising my C&C was in the same pile!

Was only £5 from a carboot sale but still what a muppet!
