This is an excellent movie and I have to say Roger Donaldson has done an amazing job, to if you read the book by Tim Hanna after the same name you will realize as I did how incredibly talented and brilliantly minded Burt Munro was. I mean, forging his own pistons, hacksawing and filing camshaft profiles??? How is that possible? I know he is only human but anyone who knew him said he was one of the best. I had no idea until I read the book, and it is supremely written too by the way
@kiwipirate600 He was another Peter Brittenn. He had an eye for detail,a basic knowledge and perseverance of what worked, and what didnt, and to hell with the high tech. And went from there. He truly was from the " No 8 wire" generation, sadly now fading away in NZ.And as far as I know, the record set by Burt still stands to this day.
@sunonthewindow I stand corrected! Yep,John Brittenn. There was a very good documentary made about the first time they went to the USA to race the bike, scavenging preloved tyres and all.The only parts that failed were the ones they didnt make or design, and footage of the bike pulling wheel stands beside the leading Ducati bikes on the straights is no mean feat!
A portion of the doco is on YouTube as part of an old Top Gear Programme.Just copy and paste in to the search pane: Top Gear: Britten V1000 Racing Motorcycle
@saltydog45 that was actually because of the poorly designed fairings that generated uplift mate. so whenever they put the power down the aerodynamics of the bike would put the front wheel into the air. You need to read the books about Britten also mate. the doco's slightly bend the truth.. the bike wasnt toying with the dukes at all, sadly they couldnt get past them and 2nd place most the time. but farout it was a bloody amazing achievement! once fairings where redesigned the bike really went
@sunonthewindow They actually banned burt before his last planned trip as with the bike getting faster they found it just to risky to let him run, after that burts health went downhill a bit, he lost co ordination and sold his indian frame in usa also he locally sold his velocette (also held a landspeed record) and indian with another frame locally. The frame in us has an engine made from spare parts. Burts under 1k record has been frozen so you cant beat it even if you officially beat it..
@sunonthewindow one last thing mate.. google burt munro letters also, very interesting stuff. "183.58 mph. That set a record in the category of "streamlined motorcycles under 1,000cc." To qualify, he made a one-way run of 190.07 mph, the fastest ever officially recorded speed on an Indian." he also got over 190 from memory in an officially timed non official run.. an interesting note is it took years for burts ohv config to go as fast as his sidevalve engine
That is me "Binocular Boy" at 1:08, you can see me better in the actual movie. I was a racing official and in almost every scene on the Salt Flats. We were there for two weeks filming. They put me up in the Golden Nugget Hotel in Wendover Nevada free of charge, as well as all the food I could eat, and the best cars and motorcycles on the planet. What a life!
I thought that his accent was pretty good through most of the movie, of course in some parts it was a little off, but quite believable in most of the movie...so many people can't do the NZ accent without sounding like an Aussie steriotype lol
Brilliant film, one of Hopkins best parts - but God, check out this and other versions of the trailer and it just goes to prove that they had NO IDEA how to market this film - the music and voiceovers they use in them were so innapropriate for the films tone.
haha. i'm so surprised and happy to see him in this role! he just keeps surprising me again and again with his range. i've only seen a few of his key films but i look forward to the long list of films that await me. that's why i love it when i stumble across a great actor: being able to go through all their films is so exciting!
This is a great movie...You would think it would have done better.. I talk to people that say they have never heard of this video.. A great meaning about follow your dreams..
fantatic!! Fantastic movie, I really enjoyed? watching this one - hopefully there is a sequel! Watch the movie online in great quality here: MOVIEPRINCESS [ DOT ] COM
I think Anthony Hopkins is Welsh? I don't know.. somewhere from the UK.. but he portrayed the New Zealand accent perfectly... thats what they sound like in the South Island.
I was a young boat racer growing up. I like Burt spent hours and lotsa money for that extra mile an hour. Very funny and inspirational. After I bought the dvd I watched it over and over again, my girlfriend thought I was nuts but I just love the story and Burt. P.S. the book is even better!
Lads if you want a real audio thrill take alook at Silverback Racing... 100hp Vincent Dyno Run here on youTube... Ah no bike has the soul of a Vincent 52 Lads.. And none ever will.. Have a listen to Richard Thompson's great ballad 52 Vincent Black Lightning. God bless Bert Munro, his Indian his great courage and skill.. may his record stand forever..
burt monroe..said (well in the movie at least) ' if you don't follow your passion, you may as well be a vegetable.' Such an amazing man!!!

@saltydog45 Peter Brittenn? Are you talking about John Britten? And yes, Burt's record for streamlined motorcycles under 1000cc still stands.
