They died. In mermaid mythology when a mermaid dies they turn into sea foam. I don't know why they would kill merbabies in a Disney film though.

Technically this isn't a Disney cartoon. Disney had the Harman-Ising Studio make this one, because of the overwork of the production of Snow White.
