The lion fish eats its own body weight EVERY DAY! It will eat until there are no other fish on the reef. They are an invasive species as a result of saltwater tank enthusiasts releasing them into the ocean. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew smashed an aquarium tank that released half a dozen of them. The population in the Caribbean is many times the amount of their native waters of the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. Unless you are licensed, you should not approach a lionfish as they have a nasty sting!
I understand it has no natural predators and isn't from here, but why or what is the ramification on it being here? Is this the result of ships dumping their balast or the pet trade? Is it ok to spear them to rid them? thanks for any answers-Bob
