thank you david.....this has been the highlight of harmonica career......Also, thanks for seeing that toots was urging me on to play......I would not have played that much had he not informed me to do so.
Randy - Don't worry about any of these critical comments. If you look around YouTube you'll notice that these (non-musician usually) cretins are always trying to make a horse race out of art. Or worse, they make it a battle. We see what's what. Don't worry
I've worked with Randy on several occasions, and he's an amazing musician. He's also very humble and giving as an artist. There's no way he would disrespect someone he reveres as much as Toots.
Yes, at the beginning it seemed that Randy was not giving Toots respect, but Toots' enjoyment is palpable later on. The great man has climbed every mountain possible with this instrument and seemed to be happy to allow Randy to have a free go on his (Toots') famous signature tune. Listener should focus more in Toots' obvious pleasure, and appreciate Randy's abundant talent. He could very well be the next Toots.
Randy, I also want to say that it's a great honor when a legend like Toots lets you play with him. Congratulations!! I am equally honored to be playing with Irving Fields. Lol, not everyone gets to play with Irving. And, lol, it's not everyone who gets an opportunity to play with Toots. Again, you two work great together. Just from watching the clip, it is obvious that you are both on the same wavelength & that you share a very deep respect for each other as friends & fellow musicians. Carolyn
Hi, Randy. I stopped back again. That is absolutely wonderful that Toots kept asking you to keep playing. That's a true testament to your excellence on the harmonica!! And a nice compliment from all all-time legend like Toots means everything! I understand why you don't want to upstage him though. As a professional violinist, I have been doing some playing with Irving Fields in NYC. He's world famous and a legendary "lounge" pianist. I feel the same exact way when I play with him. Carolyn
Hi Randy, I stopped to listen again because you & Toots did such a beautiful job with Bluesette. You work well together! Your performance is very inspiring & uplifting! I wanted to mention my friend Barry Watson again. There is great news! Barry will be on "The Antiques Roadshow UK" on Nov 2. Barry will be playing "Give Me the Simple Life" on his harmonica, & he will show his Humph Lyttleton memorabilia. Watch if you can! He plays beautifully! You do too, Randy! Carolyn
Hi Randy. I'm a professional violinist. Wow! You are great! I'm blown away! I think you're a great musician! And I'm terribly impressed with the way that you make that harmonica sing. Absolutely gorgeous & I know what fine harmonica playing is because I've heard some great artists! First, there is Toots. He is an alltime legend! Lucky you to duet with him! I also have a very dear friend, Barry Watson from the UK, who is fantastic on chromatic harmonica. Keep up the wonderful work, Randy!
Hola Randy, Danny LLoret from PR told me about you. You are Great!Nice knowin' you and what kind of chromatic do you recomend to learn. i'm stuck in diatonic
The truth is (correct me here) that it's not the harp that makes that amazing sound but the amount of air and the shape of the air that you put through it. I mean, a decent harp on a windy day will play the notes, but a great bellows is what it takes to make it sing,
Is that a fair assessment?
(And I love the extra motifs thrown in on the fly. Clever!)
Thanks for the great job playing with Toots. Randy you play very well. Have you ever thought about trying to help others learn the chromatic harmonica? You might try doing something like Adam Gussow who is giving some of the best blues harmonica lessons in the world via You Tube. His free lessons are helping many not only to learn but to share with the world the art of playing blues harmonica. I sure would like to see you do that for the chromonica.
Let me be clear here to anyone who may feel that I was trying to disrespect him by over playing must keep this in mind. Toots was feeling ill that night, it was his birthday, it was late in the evening and he had just finished playing two nights and our song was the last song of the evening for the two nights. He encouraged me to play more solos than he during the performance.
you are totally correct.....i was nervous and overcome with emotion to play with my master harmonica teacher. Toots is the best harmonica player in the world. I could hardly believe he invited me to play and encouraged me to play most of the solos, even when I tried to stop, he waves me to continue.
I have a great relationship with toots and speak with him all the time.
I am sorry you found my performance offensive--what i find more offensive is your inability to see the truth, that toots was urging me to continue to play--he had been playing for two and a half hours before I played that song, he is 84 years old and wanted to showcase my playing- plus he was tired
Toots is always charming, incredibly sweet character. HE likes to jam a bit too, but hey, it is HIS major composition, so I'm sure he had a good time receiving Randy's honours. (But Toots is the master, hehe). Nice video!
Wow, I really enjoyed that! And that was so generous of Toots, letting you shine like that. Where was this recorded? Country, city, venue? Btw, towards the end there, I thought that was your band. Because you turned to the band to signal you were gonna end, which made me think you were the leader of the band. But then you left the stage, so I assume it was Toots' band, right?
Watch the video again -Everytime I finished a solo, I stopped playing he points at me TO CONTINUE PLAYING!!. You can see from the smile on his face he was enjoying my solos and at the end, we trade lines playfully. I love toots too much to want to try to outplay him, besides, he is the master. I respect him to the highest.
Watch the video again and watch his face and hand point to me to continue each time I stop during my solos. You will get a different perspective of what really happened.
> i have to apologize, sorry , you are right , thats probably what it is, i saw the video again, and he is pointing at you all the time, sorry again, i will never ever give any comments again, but i did and i have to deal with it. Best Regards Thomas
Look at toots' right hand. You will see him indicating over and over to me to continue to play. You can see me stopping to let him play and he simply points back to me to play instead of him playing himself. Toots seemed to enjoy just playing counterpoint to my playing! You can see it in his facial expressions and body language and by his choice of lower harmony notes.
THANK GOD FOR TOOTS THIELEMANS!!!!!
