@gabeherrera3 this is a hard fight for the guy with one sword but it sure can be won. there are lots of trick that can be don to use the shield against the guy holding it and other things that can really mess him up you just have to be careful. it is a good question
thanks, you know this was a lot of fun and is actually how Hiroshi and I met and became friends. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope I get more opportunity to make more like this and the few others I have done.
@Ianflaer Thank you for your kind comment. I'm sure since a movie like this has surfaced people would be interested to see a Kendoka vs a Spartan, Vikining, Mongol etc. Its interesting to see how the Eastern style can deal with a sword and shield style. I'm not sure if Samurai encountered shields when fighting the Mongols (as I will look it up), but this movie in particular sparked my interest in sword fighting and its history :)
@GOBRAGH2 Thank you for your kind comment! This movie is interesting as people would be interested in seeing how the Samurai swordsmanship would do against a Spartan, Viking, Mongol, etc I don't know if the Mongols used shields but I think they used small ones. (I'll look it up) Movies like this inspire me to try the Western swordsmanship as I already enjoyed learning Kendo for a short time. Movies like this inspire me to learn more about a try various types of swordsmanship :)
if you are way out of distance, it's ok to break your kamai and walk normally...no need for an akward shuffle towards your opponant. it's even acceptable in kendo matches so don't worry about causing offence. also remember, if your opponant attacks, your head shouldn't shift an inch.
next time your opponant barges you with a shield, just show him the value of holding centre. loads of people i've fought have charged, you can easily send them sprawling.
thank you for the post it is so nice to hear from some one with obvious training giving real feedback. sir you are a credit to the 'Tube. I'd love to spar with you someday if we are ever near each other. I live in NW Oregon now but I move around a lot.
please come out and beat on use someday. we'd b glad to let you teach us. or are you just an internet ninja with no skill other than talking shit? put your sword were you mouth is or bow out respectfully.
I commented on another video already and will not do so again, but this rude individual is wrong. You guys are clearly having fun, and that totally does not suck. Most likely, said asshole sucks.
I am a little disappointed in the kendoka for not bringing more to the table here, but whatever. Looks like this was a blast. Keep posting these, I for one enjoy them.
@renzokata No no. Both are very good. It's just the Kendo user is stuck in a forward stance, and is only using his basic strike, as well as keeping firmly planted. the sheild man is getting in faster. It is more than possible to tear a shield up with Kendo, Kenjutsu and other bastard sword forms. the issue here is that the japo is fighting like he'd fighting another katana, or a duel wielder. He just needs a different angle is all.
@renzokata all you have to do is come over and we'll see about that. I'd be glad to show you what you are missing. New York is a long way off but I'm in the military and travel a lot. it wasn't that long ago I was in your neck of the woods. had I known we could have met up somewhere and had it out. I really think that after you cross sticks with me your attitude will change.
@Ianflaer if thats you in the video then you dont have a chance in hell. either of you. you both suck. the guy with the shield(you?) i can see comming a mile away. it's like your moving in slow motion. i strike like a snake dude. you wont even see me. the other dude, what the fuck is he doing? hes not even fighting back!!!!!! sleeping with a shinai in his hand. i dont live in ny dude, i live in norfolk va. come see me cuz you havent yet. we can do it right on the beach.
If ever you wish to spar and are in New Zealand lol let me know. Victoria University in Wellington, Speak to one of the instructors and you should be able to find me.
it would be an honor to do so. I may have to make sure I have practiced some and lost a few pounds before I find myself in New Z (which may still never happen but being a coasty. . .)
I'd love to meet up with you some day and get into gear. I'd be happy to give you a few lessons. sure there are plenty of folks who are better swordsmen than I but you have to dig pretty deep to find them. it's posts like these that really make me want to get to a fighter's practice and ring some helms.
No need to explain dude, I understand. I once served as Elite Guard to the C.C.C.T. and Sempai at Kisona dojo and then an Instructor for G.K.R. Karate under Sensei Mares. Unlike you guys we were forbidden padded gear. Pain is a good teacher, scars a reminder. I doubt you could teach me too much mate.
Please take this the right way. Tom you need to work on your stance... Lower your stance a little more you charge forward but your center of gravity is not low enough to sustain recoil and you are unable to evade efficiently while in such a high stance.
well, a lot of what you are seeing would be different if I were in better shape or had practiced much recently, sadly I am badly out of form. also, my opponent had an unpaded shinai weighing almost nothing there's not much avoiding that especially not while wearing heavy gear. as for recoil, there wasn't any. it is true I should have lowered my center a bit but it really made little difference given the situation. I had a massive advantage in experience over Hiroshi not to mention the shield.
Well, the SCA ruleset puts the fighter with the two-handed sword at a disadvantage against sword-and-shield. I'd rather see Hiroshi against a good SCA bastard sword fighter (someone like me).
well, I don't know about a GOOD SCA bastard sworder, but I've done it. a few years ago mind. anyway check out round 3. also remember we are using some pretty slopped together equipment.
I love to consider every possible approach, that I can personally come up with, anyway. I'd have to say that I havfe a few different opinions;
1. I still say it was possible for Hiroshi to get behind Tom's shield, and that Hiroshi has the skill to do it.
2. I personally, am Rooting for Tom from one side of myself, simply because I know him a little better than Hiro; However, I've a "Hiro" pennant in the other hand out of my preferrance for Japanese Arts.
talk all you want buddy, that's why this is here. of course it is always possible to get past or behind a shield, it's the HOW to get there that is problematic. Hiroshi gets better every time we spar and I'm sure it won't be long before it's a straight toss-up on will win.
I remember seeing this on Iamflaer's channel; This is really an argument of Good Defense vs Good offense. I would like to think of it in terms of a serious battle; a step, some shoulder action, and Hiro has Tom's head via thrust. However! [I just love technical debates,] Tom definitely has the defensive front; he has more options in regard to angle of attack. This is a debate, that in alost every way, comes down to the human factor, and WHO is using what style. Not the style itself.
too often you were bracing for impact and leaning forward exposing your head. hehe...was like two tanks battling. and when he lost his sword you should have immediately attacked. same as in kendo. its hard to change your fighting style. i used to practice two or 3 kendoka against me. instead of the 1 vs 1 traditional. you have to really change your style. i saw a lot of people that couldnt adapt at all. i bet you learned a lot from this..let me check out two. i hope your ankle is really ok.
well that was fun. pretty interesting. hiroshi why didnt you try to use jodan posture? i think you had a lot of opportunities to hit DO also...and no tsuki at the body either? or thigh attacks?
I'd disagree, Randy. In my opinion, Mercy is a large part of Honor; But to each Ronin their own. ;-)
And I'm sure that it's possible that Hiro could of tossed his sword at Tom, baseball slid his legs, and jujutsu'd the crap out of Tom's knees [Which I don't imagine a triangle is fun in platemail,] OR Tom could have went completely olympic discus, tossed his shield at Hiro, and switched to a crazy-ass hand-and-a-hald sword style?
A million x factors to consider. I love this sort of thing.
how can one sword beat a sword and shield? not even fair kniht just takes out sword with shield and swings

Hmmm, Tom lost his sword twice, and even his shield once. Had there been no mercy on the part of the Samurai, Tom would have been sliced and diced.
Or at least he could have bowed to be honorable beheaded in defeat.
