I propose that these hand gestures are leftover remnants of language that we really no longer understand fully. I do notice they are not as dominant in cultures like Norse, Dane, Swed and so on.

I suspect there was a time in which these served a more solid purpose. Now these gestures have been passed on a social mannerism rather than the original language purpose they were originated for.
