16 & 24" are the most common installations. We have even had folks install the paneling on 4 foot centers in pole barn type buildings, but they were selective in using our shorter pieces....making sure they saved those for areas where there were vertical nailers.
do the studs need to be 16''oc or ....?

You would be surprised at how economical the paneling is in comparison to drywall installation and messy clean up.
