Excellent stuff! I've been nosing around the geometry of Howe and Williams valve gear, just snooping you understand, but looking at the elegent symmetry of your final answer, the gravity hold reversing lever, I can only say your whole series of films leading to this triumphant conclusion has brought me a grin of satisfaction on a par with Fred Dibnah's best. Bravo.
