Not a bad commercial, Z100 was radical and revolutionary in 1984 for radio, when MTV premiered its first music video about 3 yrs. later: "Video killed the radio star". Not quite, let's thank Z100, Kiss-FM, Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh, Art Bell, Mark and Brian, and other newly tried methods to kept radio (esp. AM dial) alive in the last 30 years. Now we have XM radio: more variety and free speech but costs $25 a month, plus competitior Sirius radio was a failure. Z100 needs to reboot today. +
Z100 is doing just fine Thank You. It rebooted several times. Once in the mid 1990's and then again a few years later. Z100 and KIIS have been evolving over the years.
This spot was syndicated to a number of CHR and AOR stations during the early 80s. I've first saw it when WKSF in Asheville, NC used it when they've first sign on the air with their CHR format in 1984. Loved John Cameron Swayze's line, which was made famous when he was the pitchman for Timex Watches.
Where's the other 1984 Z-100 ad with Hulk Hogan smashing a radio?

Probably the funniest scene is Scott Shannon and the late J.R. Nelson with their "head-on belly collision" at 0:14.

Hey if you wanna hear Z100 they stream on the net at around 128kbit/s and have that same processed busted up, pumped up sound.
I bet their engineer spent a lot of time keeping those ITC 99b's sound good.

KKMG in Colorado used this in the mid 80's as well.
Still around to this day.

Then (and current) sister station WMMS/Cleveland used this exact same commercial. It was produced by Lorain native Don Novello.
