I have one question: You started by adding "one cup of okara" into the blender. Does that mean you blend some of the okara and then you also mix in some unblended okara at the end?
Good use for the okara. I am just starting to make soya milk, and it seemed a shame to waste the residue after filtering. Besides, I like felafel! Will try this out, thanks.
ingredientes.

@hackneytrainer In case no one answered your question, okara is the Japanese name for what is left after you blend soya beans with water to make soya milk. Once you strain the blended mixture the solids left have all the fibre and quite a lot of protein. You can use this 'okara' in veggie burgers and rissoles. It is rather like when Indians make dahi bara, but using the soya okara instead of lentils. It is best to boil the mixture before straining it to cook the okara first.
i've just prepared it. couldn't wait to buy parsley so I left that out. made it without baking powder and with sesame ouil instead of olive oil. It turned out very delicious! thank you for this recipe!
I always used those leftover fibers to make a tofu-butter-spicy-thingy and stuff sandwiches. Can't wait to try the felafels, gonna try to cook'em up on the stove though.
you can also add the soy grinds with egg and ground meat and make fried meat balls or patties.... i had that when i was little.... now im a vegetarian...
It's the stuff you get after making soymilk - so it's soy beans minus the milk. So you would only really use it if you were making soymilk and had it left over. Otherwise you could just make felafel with chickpeas.
Just tried this -- it turned out great!. I'm so glad of all these uses okara has -- I felt awful to threw it away :)

Okara is like the waste product, the roughage left over after you use your soy beans to make tofu. They make very good veggie burgers.

Do you pre-cook the okara when using it in this recipe? Or is the frying enough?

we dont go for meat either. we also tried pasta sauce with it. yummy
toydoctorrrs 3 years ago
i had some leftoverfelafel cooked in tomato sauce over rice for lunch today. Some of the felafels broke and thickened the sauce quite nicely!
Carmarthan415 3 years ago
and apparently, too much unfermented soy is not so good... So, I'd use it as a treat only.

Yeah, you don't want to eat too many of them. Just a couple with a big plate of salad and vegetables maybe.

No I meant the part at :39 sec. when you said 'Add this blended stuff to a bowl'. I see now you were adding the blended stuff to the okara.

It's CUM-IN? Not coo-min? Learn something new every day.
Armonis 4 years ago
I say "cue-men", but I often her "coo-min". Never heard it as "cum-in" until today, though! English is a fun language. ;)
thatamericangirl 4 years ago
I'm thinking it's her awesome accent+heritage.
Armonis 4 years ago 4
@Armonis Because she pronounces garlic "gahlic" and cumin "cummin"?
