This is a brilliant game, but there is a sharp distinction from something challenge and ridiculously obscure. The existence of the 8 stars falls to the latter for the most part. I can honestly see no reasonable gamer assume their existence/location without some sort of preconceived knowledge from the internet. The "books" at the beginning of each level would of been a great way to allude to some of these secrets. But with no prior knowledge of these stars, coincidence had a big role.

@Darkchabuti If you move the whole puzzle down and over to the right enough to jump on that ledge like you do to get the puzzle piece in the game you can jump and stand on it. then jump again while standing on it and when you're at the top of your jump go to solve the puzzle, press b if on xbox, and move the puzzle up, then repeat untill you are high enough to get the star.

As much as I applaud this video and your efforts, as well as this brilliant game, I disagree with this. These stars are difficult to get even if you do know where they are. I didn't even know the game had stars until someone else told me. I don't mind seeing someone else do it, instead of spending many hours for a part of the game that is totally superficial and not nearly as interesting as the central part. Too much of a departure.
@Jotto999 I agree, I don't think I could have done it without help. It was last year that I did it, though, so I can hardly remember doing it. Some of the star puzzles, once you know where they are, are easier than others, though, and it's also worth noting (the video didn't) that you can't get the Level 1-1 star unless you've got every other star already.
Seeing the house star and the one at the cloud bridge, i have come to the conclusion that you can't figure these things out by yourself without spending 200 hours on the game or being one of the developers... this guy is good at explaining but i don't believe he found them all without help
The last scene makes me think that saving the princess is possible. I think that cause if you don't go for the last star and proceed normally, on the reversed way, there's a moment where you can access a ladder. Unfortunately by the time I saw it, it was already behind me. Although I don't know if it'll allow you to climb it since the time is frozen by default on the way back.
In level 6-5 there is no need to go to the right ramp above the cannon. You can jump straight to the left ramp using 2 goombos. This ramp only gives you vision but it is really not needed when you know where to jump.

What? Are you kidding me? I got to restart the game from the beginning just to be able to get the first star? Who came up with this f***ing idea? I even knew about the stars before playing the game but I decided to finish it before trying this harder challenge. Something requiring advanced skills shouldn't be done when you're just learning how to play the game. I spent so many hours playing just for nothing. I won't ever play it again. I'll watch the end here.
Another helpful tip: Rather than rewind/playing to time things, you can just FREEZE time. This can be done by hitting the time warp (shift on PC, don't know the 360 command) and hitting up once.
Johnathan Blow has changed the level so the goomba solution no longer works. To get on the cloud, you must enter the level from the right side, run all the way to the left side, and wait for the cloud to reach the locked door. Then, you jump off of the locked door and on to the cloud.
@dschinni I think you need all of the stars (or at least a few, idk) before doing that one, since with the lever you need green reveals important part of the secret story.
I just finished it today after buying it for cheap from PSN+, and i honestly didn't even know there were stars in this game. I actually felt quite proud of myself getting all the puzzle pieces and thought i was quite skilled at the game.... until i saw this that is.
In all honesty.. knowing that I played through the entire game as a loser doesn't make me in any way willing to replay it just to see an equally negative ending.. Way to push positivity game developers!

Hey hmm for the star in the house you CAN do it even if the puxxle is complete. you jump then you press O, you move up the puzzle and youll be a step higher..
I, like many others, completed the game with no stars, so I tried to get the stars with just the clues, but found nothing, so then I thought that I'd just watch a few answers to get an idea on how it's done. But when I saw every answer, and my reaction was "Fuck no! I do not play games like that! there is no way in hell I'd find any of these on my own!" I'm not even sure I want to even attempt some of them.
if you're playing on a pc the way to get the 2nd star is to press alt+enter so you can still use your computer. while the game is picked the mouse doesnt work, but i prefer watching a movie while putting the player always on top. make the two hours fly... not really but ur not looking at the screen the whole time though =)
If they ever release a patch that gives you an extra trophy/achievement for unlocking all the stars, I'll do it. As it is, I could only be bothered getting three of them (the one in the house, the first one with the plants and the one where you and your shadow juggle the goomba). It seems a bit pointless otherwise, especially since if you start a new game or even a speedrun you lose your stars anyway.
You can also use the exit door to re-enter the stage and stand on top of the unlockable door. That allows you to just jump onto the cloud as it passes by. Either way works of course.
OK, I appreciate that the enjoyment of the game really comes from figuring this stuff out for yourself, but COME ON! How the fuck were we ever supposed to figure that shit out?
Jesus Christ I didn't know there was stars so then I began looking for them for days then I watched the beginning of this vid where he says in this snap shot part of the star was visible I paused the vid and tried for hours. Then I watched a bit where he says the puzzle has to be incomplete and I about committed suicide
So I completed world 3 jigsaw before I knew there were stars in the game. So now I can't get all the stars is that what you're saying? Isn't there a way to undo the jigsaw?
Actually in the 2-hours-cloud level you can jump on the cloud with more ease -
Just go past the level into the next and return throught the same door - the lock at the beginning of the stage will remain locked. Jump on it first and then on the slow cloud.
I a) didn't even know there were stars on my first play-through and b) TWO HOURS?! Who the hell has two hours to just leave their computer on while Tim slowly goes across the level on a cloud? I can understand tricky jumps or complex puzzles, but that's just asinine.

I was thinking the same way. Though, I my play again just for the speed run and the stars. Otherwise, I don't really care enough. It was a journey I was interested in, and it was a journey completed.

also, in 1-1 when u have to rewind to go back to the beginning there are 3 extra ladders that go up to the level where the princess is, on the playthrough i pressed up on the location where one of these ladders would be so that when i rewinded tim(e) would go up the ladder, but when he got to that ladder on the rewind, tim(e) didn't go up the ladder, he just stared upwards as if there was no ladder. does anyone know why these 3 ladder were placed in the rewind if they can't be used? purpose?
@an0nym005e To make it look like Tim would have climbed up the ladder to get to the "princess" if she hadn't dropped them or blocked them. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense when you reverse.
I admit I watched the solutions before I even tried to find them, but i don't feel so bad anymore since I probably wouldn't of found them anyway after watching the solutions >.>
I could have found the one in the house though, but I just couldent find it and it was because I solved world 3 already.
I think my game is glitched. At the end, the chandelier takes me up, and after the bomb I end up on the ground. I can't run left because it's blocked off, and if I run right I fall off an impossibly high wall which I can't jump up to.
All I can do is climb up to the princesses window and watch her sleep.....
@Groudon0199 Thanks, I got it after the eighth go or something :P I kept falling through the middle too, so if anyone else is having this problem, aim for the edges of the chandelier.
@MoechtegernPimP You can't get the star in the puzzle for world 3 if you finished the puzzle, because you have to take two pieces and put them next to eachother and you can't do that if the puzzle is solid. For world two, you can move the puzzle around after solving it, so just move it down far enough to jump on it. Then jump, edit the puzzle in midair, move the puzzle up, and then land on the now higher platform. :)
To be honest, I noticed some hints at the Atomic Bomb theory the first time I played the game, but I think it goes deeper than that. It actually made me realize how my own "princess" is always in another castle. I must keep looking then.
on cloud bridge 2-2 when waiting for the cloud to go across you can't alt tab and play around in windows, it pauses the game. in case anyone is wondering why it's taking longer then 2 hours
@Japbecois - You can command+tab the braid screen to the back on OS X and it still runs so you can do other things while you wait the 2 hours. Well on OS X that is.

@s1212241044 sure, you did it, but many people can't. It is enough of a challenge to reach the stars let alone FIND THEM. For many people, knowing through these videos that it is entirely possible to do challenges like this is the only way people can know that this is possible, and to be honest, solving something near impossible like this is gratifying enough. Take your narcissism somewhere else where it doesn't kill the morale of gamers who deserve this motivation.
Though I doubt anyone will listen to my advice ill give it anyways, finding the stars yourself is much more gratifying. Solving the puzzles to get the stars yourself is soo much more gratifying. You paid for a PUZZLE GAME so you can solve them, NOT so someone else can solve it for you. Get your moneys worth, and if you get stuck all the better. The game will last that much longer. If I could do it, you can do it.
This game is quite THE GAME!... I can't believe this is an indie game... well, no, actually I can believe it. It's Amazing!

CORRECTION TO CLOUD STAR SOLUTION AHEAD:

You can also use the exit door to re-enter the stage and stand on top of the unlockable door. That allows you to just jump onto the cloud as it passes by. Either way works of course.

Jesus Christ I didn't know there was stars so then I began looking for them for days then I watched the beginning of this vid where he says in this snap shot part of the star was visible I paused the vid and tried for hours. Then I watched a bit where he says the puzzle has to be incomplete and I about committed suicide

So I completed world 3 jigsaw before I knew there were stars in the game. So now I can't get all the stars is that what you're saying? Isn't there a way to undo the jigsaw?

Actually in the 2-hours-cloud level you can jump on the cloud with more ease -
Just go past the level into the next and return throught the same door - the lock at the beginning of the stage will remain locked. Jump on it first and then on the slow cloud.

I a) didn't even know there were stars on my first play-through and b) TWO HOURS?! Who the hell has two hours to just leave their computer on while Tim slowly goes across the level on a cloud? I can understand tricky jumps or complex puzzles, but that's just asinine.

I was thinking the same way. Though, I my play again just for the speed run and the stars. Otherwise, I don't really care enough. It was a journey I was interested in, and it was a journey completed.

also, in 1-1 when u have to rewind to go back to the beginning there are 3 extra ladders that go up to the level where the princess is, on the playthrough i pressed up on the location where one of these ladders would be so that when i rewinded tim(e) would go up the ladder, but when he got to that ladder on the rewind, tim(e) didn't go up the ladder, he just stared upwards as if there was no ladder. does anyone know why these 3 ladder were placed in the rewind if they can't be used? purpose?

@an0nym005e To make it look like Tim would have climbed up the ladder to get to the "princess" if she hadn't dropped them or blocked them. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense when you reverse.

I admit I watched the solutions before I even tried to find them, but i don't feel so bad anymore since I probably wouldn't of found them anyway after watching the solutions >.>
I could have found the one in the house though, but I just couldent find it and it was because I solved world 3 already.

I think my game is glitched. At the end, the chandelier takes me up, and after the bomb I end up on the ground. I can't run left because it's blocked off, and if I run right I fall off an impossibly high wall which I can't jump up to.
All I can do is climb up to the princesses window and watch her sleep.....
or exit the level and try again.

It's possible, i did it.
You can move the puzzle down and jump on it,
then jump again and press up (on pc),
move again the puzzle until you reach the top,
the jump and get the star.
But i think that you already resolved it right?

@MoechtegernPimP You can't get the star in the puzzle for world 3 if you finished the puzzle, because you have to take two pieces and put them next to eachother and you can't do that if the puzzle is solid. For world two, you can move the puzzle around after solving it, so just move it down far enough to jump on it. Then jump, edit the puzzle in midair, move the puzzle up, and then land on the now higher platform. :)

To be honest, I noticed some hints at the Atomic Bomb theory the first time I played the game, but I think it goes deeper than that. It actually made me realize how my own "princess" is always in another castle. I must keep looking then.

on cloud bridge 2-2 when waiting for the cloud to go across you can't alt tab and play around in windows, it pauses the game. in case anyone is wondering why it's taking longer then 2 hours

@Japbecois - You can command+tab the braid screen to the back on OS X and it still runs so you can do other things while you wait the 2 hours. Well on OS X that is.

I did the whole game on my own but could'nt figure out the stars, now that I know how to get them I'm not even going to try, waiting 2hrs just to get 1 stupid star is not worth it. Great game but those stars are for the obsessive only!

@s1212241044 sure, you did it, but many people can't. It is enough of a challenge to reach the stars let alone FIND THEM. For many people, knowing through these videos that it is entirely possible to do challenges like this is the only way people can know that this is possible, and to be honest, solving something near impossible like this is gratifying enough. Take your narcissism somewhere else where it doesn't kill the morale of gamers who deserve this motivation.

Though I doubt anyone will listen to my advice ill give it anyways, finding the stars yourself is much more gratifying. Solving the puzzles to get the stars yourself is soo much more gratifying. You paid for a PUZZLE GAME so you can solve them, NOT so someone else can solve it for you. Get your moneys worth, and if you get stuck all the better. The game will last that much longer. If I could do it, you can do it.
