The problem with this immigration debate is that it's based on ideology rather than on data. Most Americans may support the Arizona bill, but how many of them have read and understood the bill? How many of them know that violence by illegal immigrants has actually been going down? How many understand our entire economy is dependent on illegal immigrants? I'd say it's safe to say very few know much of anything. Public opinion on issues like this isn't based on actual data.
People are afraid right now. People are afraid of terrorists. People are afraid of what is happening to the economy, afraid of losing their jobs and their houses. The BP accident contributes to this fear. People are not sure what to be afraid of. People fear the government having too much power, but they're afraid the government doesn't have enough power. It looks like you're saying that Mexican immigrants don't want to become American citizens, but rather want to reconquer (through mass immigration) historic Mexican territories.

because if they had any respect for the US
they wouldn't need to come here illegally
not even refugees being protected from war or even Haitians (knowing what happened) to them get to bypass the US registration

Sorry @goddifist, I misread your original comment. You're right, they don't respect our laws. The Mexican government is complicit in this by aiding illegal emigrants wanting to cross the US-Mexico border. Mexicans are turning large segments of America into replicas of Mexico, replete with the kind of corruption commonly found in Mexico. It's clearly a reconquista. Do a Google search for an article entitled "South Gate: Mexico Comes to California" by Roger McGrath.

Some people come to work and/or make a good life for themeselves. why should you question them.. why against mexican . the real threat is terrorist. my opinion is we should kick the people that make this place hell. Not the illegal immagrants that come for a better place!! USA USA USA.

I'm European, so I say this as a foreigner. Why exactly does US immigration policy even need to be "reformed" anyway?
If I am fluent in English, have a university degree, and have a job lined up before I even get there, I still have to go the legal way to enter ie. applying for a visa, work permits etc. And have to continually renew those work permits.
Also as a foreign national, I'll be fingerprinted.
But if I'm Mexican I can enter illegally and then protest immigration policy?

@Mystros37 Don't get me wrong, I understand where you're coming from, but the law is the law. When you break the law, you get punished. They knew what they were doing when they entered.
Now do I see it as a really bad thing? No. They're not coming to kill, rape and steal. They're coming to work.
But why should they be let in freely, but people of other nations still have to do it the legal way?

This is what makes this nation great and prosperous... I do acknowledge the issue with the law in terms of crossing the border illegally... if amnesty is given, they will have to pay a fine in order to stay.

@ZKY2 Some illegals do come with the intent to commit felonies. Oftentimes they'll evade the police by running back to Mexico, where they can pay off Mexican cops with bribes.

@Mystros37 SB 1070 shouldn't tear families apart. In most cases, people live apart from their families voluntarily. There's no reason the family of an alien deported to Mexico can't join him, unless they'd rather live in America.

@Mystros37 Mexico's government may be corrupt, but the Mexican people aren't oppressed. In fact, they have more freedom to buy and sell goods than Americans. Most Mexicans can go about their daily business without getting harassed by the government. Mexicans come here to enjoy our higher standard of living, not to escape oppression.

most indigenous communities are... just recently in Oaxaca Mexico, independent indigenous communities were shot and killed over land distribution... election after election you hear fraud, fraud... the mexican government is no more corrupt or unjust than Arizona senator and governor

The problem with this immigration debate is that it's based on ideology rather than on data. Most Americans may support the Arizona bill, but how many of them have read and understood the bill? How many of them know that violence by illegal immigrants has actually been going down? How many understand our entire economy is dependent on illegal immigrants? I'd say it's safe to say very few know much of anything. Public opinion on issues like this isn't based on actual data.

People are afraid right now. People are afraid of terrorists. People are afraid of what is happening to the economy, afraid of losing their jobs and their houses. The BP accident contributes to this fear. People are not sure what to be afraid of. People fear the government having too much power, but they're afraid the government doesn't have enough power. Only a powerful govt can stop terrorists, oil accidents & illegal immigration. Many politicans pander to this fear for personal gain.
