  • The hermit crabs with purple pinchers can snap a number 2 pencil in half.Away to make them not pinch you is to put the hermit crab in your hand with a treat.

Every time you see your 'Crabbie' do it.Soon enough

The crab will be more cheerful to greet you!

  • @milkshake101able Not all hermit crabs but I bet these size very much could come near. However I do wish someone would have told me this when I got my first crab because guess who got nailed by a gaint hermit crab. Mine was about half the size of my fist.

  • i had the awesome fortune of watching my crab change her shell right after i cleaned her tank and put two new shells in there for her. she did not hesitate for a second. took about 20 mins in total for her to make the switch but it was definitely worth seeing

  • I miss my hermit crabs.. They all died.

  • wow.Neva saw a "nudie' crab.I have 2 hermies I got 2 weeks ago.

  • i thank my hermit crab is retarded no offence but he keeps changeing in betweenthe two shells.....ps nice video its really cool watching them do that.

  • cool video really facinating but its kinda long just for one changing its shell

  • these crabs are truly fascinating creatures :)

  • I'm hoping to get some hermit crabs soon...that was a really cool video!!!

  • my crab stays in its shell all the time but its not dead and its not in a burrow its not going to molt soon what should i do

  • Well, do you have more than one crab? Hermit crabs prefer to have a "buddy" with them, meaning you need another crab. It could be your habitat and food.-if not try holding the hermit crab more often! And also, if you don''t have any heat source try to!

  • Changing shells in water bowls is common for my crabs. So it's not really "first ever", as you have stated in your description.

  • WOW. I love hermit crabs. Yours are so cute!

  • I saw a hermit crab butt.

    I feel accomplished now.

  • My crab has buried himself into the sand and I'm getting nervous since it hasn't happened before. Its been over 2 days and I duno if I should dig him up or leave him. I don't want him to die. Anyone got any suggestions or advice?

  • yup.. you should leave him =)) i read about that!

  • That's good footage. My crabs need to meet with yours for good advice on staying active. I will, however, respect my crabs if they want to just sit there. I want them to play too.

  • lol my hermit crab has the same shell as yours

  • did it change shells?

  • The shell its changin into my crab bubbie has the same shell o.o"

  • That video went longer than it need to.

  • for a little bit the crab looked liek he was restling with the shell! lol

  • Why hasn't my crab changed its shell yet? He changed once, but went back into his old one after 5 minutes in the new one. He hasn't changed since. that was about a year ago. I have over 120 different shells we tried, and nothing. my baby crab changed. My big one wont he even lost a leg. :(

  • re to springfairy556: dont worry

he will change soon after a moult

he migh just prefer this shell to others

try to find the same type shell but a little larger

as some crabs are fussy little things and wont change shells often

  • i love hermits 4ever

  • Thanks for posting this. You know, they will check out every inch of the new shell before he moves in. I presently have one that's molting I hope he makes it.

  • really? I thought they never mold in captivity... but that's great..

  • They can't breed in captivity, but they definitely can molt as long as they have the proper care. :)

  • my friends hermit crab switched shells with a smaller hermit crabs shell after it died. why is that? please leave a message or comment on my page

  • that was pretty cool

  • lovely!! 5 stars!!

  • I used to have hermit crabs-they're really fun! :)

  • wut kind of hermit crab is that?

  • its a purple pincher

  • lol

  • pretty rad

  • cool, i just put my hermit crab video on here

  • is it normal for a hermit crab to rip a dying hermit crab in half just to get to its shell?

  • I hate crabs, my ex wife gave me some >:(

  • ha love it

  • lol at first i thought you really meant hermit crabs. then i was like oh, PUBIC crustaceans lol.

  • hermit crabs are really cool

  • I had a hermit crab who changed into a shell like the one that this hermit crab in the video started with..but it died :( I named it Tiki

  • I've never seen mine swich shells.. but I've seen mine shed its skin.. 0_o

  • that must have been the crazziest thing to see ever

  • hermit crabs are great for pets. I enjoy watching my hermit crabs switch too. :)

  • It's a Pica shell! Nice. Classic choice for Purple Pinchers. Cool video, thanks for sharing!

  • those shells u have i have about 5 of those types i own 6 hermit crabs and if u own hermies u need atleast 3!

  • i will buy that shell that is black n white

    and like a rock

  • wow cool!

  • So THAT'S how hermit crabs change into different shells! I've never actually seen a hc do that before!

    Thanks for showing this!

  • he just wanted to clean it out first is all hehe =)

  • well, crabs hold water in their shells (they have gills), so of course they want water in their shells before they switch!

  • no thats only for hermit crabs that permanently live in the water... land hermit crabs like this one, dont have gills or hold water in their shells.

  • cool hermit crabs are cute i have two

  • wow, that was fast!. I have a question" Why do hermit crab change shells?"

  • i have 3 hermit crabs, and they change shells because if they have lived in one for a while, it gets too small for them.. i have a video with my crabs in it if u want to check it out. it's: katie-hermit crabs

  • they change shells because sooner or later they get too big for the one that they have, and sometimes they like to switch it up a bit.

  • its funny that if you look at 1:33 you can see another crab watching oh and how can you tell when they are ready to change shells because mine hasnt changed ever since we got him

  • I have hermit crabs too. their names are cookies, cream, hermmie, cermmie, and cermmie jr. loved the video

  • cool song, bad video, that was gross.

  • You should watch a hermit crab molting then.

  • >.> you're stupid too.

  • Hermit Crabs are awesome, they change there shells so fast!

  • omg i love hermit crabs i have five of them!!

  • Awesome! I have a crab shell swap video also. Check it out!!! I also have a website!!!

  • thx for the comment but sadly I think hes dead i tried changing the temp. but nothing and I put warm water on his back and still nothing.I dont want to bury him though because I'm scared that for some reason he might still be alive if u have any more suggestions they would be much appreciated.

  • hi i was wondering if my hermit crab is still alive he came out of his shell and he was curled up I found him when he was still moving a bit and now hes moving hardly any I tried to put him in a new shell but nows hes completely no moving can some one help me?plzz

  • It could be that he's too hot or cold. 72 to 80 are the degree ranges a hermit crab should be kept in. I have five. I he is not moving, try putting a little warm water on him, if he doesn't respond then, theres a problem. It could be he is scared too. If he is alive try to encourage him to go into his shell, and if the need arises, try to raise or lower the temp. Also, if he has a musty smell or has brown discharge, hes overheated. this can sometimes be reversed. Hope I helped

  • me and my frends got three crabs from a fair and then we wanted them to grow and go into bigger shells so him being an idiot broke his smaller shell to squeeze him out and then he pulled it out and threw him into water with a bigger shell but it refused to go in it. wtf do we do? his other shell is very small and hes huge wtf do we do help us pls

  • Not only is that incredibly stupid, I'd count it as animal cruelty.

  • lol fuck u all they lived for like more than a month and they changed shells so fuck u but now theyre dead

  • That's.. not exactly a great achievement. Also, learn2/english

  • that doesnt make sense learn2/english?

  • Well they are smarter than we think they are!

  • my crab has lost 2 tips of his smaller legs

he doesnt move hardly and doesnt want to eat anymore

we keep him indoors all day 75-78 F and he has a sponge to eat and leave him fruit and stuff he just changed shell

then at night he goes outside where its 75-80

he doesnt move nearly as fast as any of your crabs do! help

  • Sometimes your hermit crab only comes out at night time (mine does) Meaning when no one is around =)

  • Big enough claw?

  • WOW thats a big crab

  • i have a hermit crab who is too big 4 his shell but he wont leave the shell(he is practingly falling out)

  • I have one like that, too. I've had him for six months and he has refused the multitude of other shells I've offered.

Basically, there's nothing you can do other than to make sure he has plenty of appropriately-sized shells to change into if he finally decides to do so.

  • having a panic attack i own 2 land hermies i have two guides and neither told me to bathe them I have had them for 3 months not once did i bathe them one just shedded his hard outside stuff are these two things connected and should I be bathing my crabs if so how often?

  • You do not need to bathe your crabs. In fact, some would advise against bathing. Just make sure they have both dechlorinated water and ocean water and that the dishes are deep enough for the crabs to immerse themselves if they feel the need.

"Shedding his outside stuff" is molting. It's a natural process and how the crab grows. Be very careful with him while he is in the molting process! Best advice is to leave him be until he is back up and moving around normally.

  • when its in the water it changes its shell so fast.mine never did they died:(

  • The Iodine in the regular salt that we eat can kill your crabs, and you NEED a salt water "pool" that is east for them to get in and out of. They need 32.6% (about) salinity in their shells to controle their body temp, and digestive system.

  • just ordenary salt from the citchen

  • dont give advice if you dont know what you are talking about! salt from your "citchen" or kitchen can be fatal for hermit crabs!

  • that was funny! I love hermit crabs. I have 2 of them and am new to having them. I can't seem to get my crabbies interested in changing shells though! I've offered at least 10 different kinds and they ignore them! PS. can anyone email me and tell me what type of salt to buy to mix a salt water pool for my crabs ?

  • wow! im not sure what type to use, but NEVER use normal salt from your kitchen (i mention this because someone posted that) as there are chemicals which can be fatal for your hermies, i think you need oceanic salt or something, im not sure, sorry

  • Salt water pool? I had hermit crabs for a year and never heard of a salt water pool..they drink fresh water.

  • It's better if you give them salt water to drink... They once lived in the Florida Keys, right next to the ocean.... At night they would come out and eat trash that washed up and 'business' of other animals. For more info on hermit crabs and how to take care of them, send me a comment. I'd be happy to help anyone.

  • Um..I have a 2 crabs about 1 inch big both sides and they still wear the shell i bout them in and i have 5 others!

  • .... Probably because they aren't getting enough nutrients in their diet to grow. Or not enough heat... Or it may be from lack of water?

  • hermit crabs are ok when i was about nine my mom bought me two once they got out the cage at night scratch my wood bed

  • Winter my baby hermitcrab seems very depressed

  • I would not suggest any one to buy hermit crabs, I have two strawberrys and they are EXTREMELY aggressive. They escape from there tank constantly and attack every thing they see! Ive had several incidents including the time my crab PLIED my fingernail off and sniping off the tip of my cats tail. They are stronger then they look. Not good for pets!

  • They are great pets. But in your case I can say less about the owner! What ws your crab doing by the cat???! Also a screen lid would help....

  • my hermit crab just bit the hell out of me :(

  • ha... hermit crabs dont bite, the petstores conditions are horrible, and the directions they give you are bad, i dont felel like giving another lecture... so, please go look up correct care

  • Ha ha ha, they're such cute little guys

  • i have 2 hermit crabs =]

    fresh and crabby <3

  • that was awsome cool thanks for showing us

  • That was absolutely adorable!

  • i got a hermy but hes sick right now hes almost two yrs old i hope he doesnt die

  • This video reminds me of the time I held a shell up to my ear to hear the ocean but instea I got some scratching noises and an ammeture piercing.

  • somehow,my hermit crab died chnging shells cuz my other one stole the shell frm it and then yea...=(

  • wow, sorry

  • idk i jsut dont have luck ewith them they do not live long for me thats all i say other pets i have had they beenm living a go while but for some reason i guess the hermmit crabs just dont like me

  • kool once my hermit crab changed its shell ive been into them alot

  • i miss my hermit crab WHY SPARKY WHY!!!!!!????/

  • That`s the 2nd time I`ve seen a Hermit Crab without a shell! (the first was when my hermit crab went naked for no reason)

  • plz click on my name and watch hermet crabs also plz comment

  • cool mine recently changed shells

  • So cute, so smart. Nice vid.

  • lol he fell.. nice vid

  • I liked the vid. So you like land hermit crabs? So do I :) You should join this hermit crab forum, hermitcrabassociation(dot)com. There are around 11,000 members who share our same interest and we all want to learn more about hermit crabs and share our experiences. It is a fun forum, the people are incredibly nice and it will give you a new found love of your hermit crabs. I hope to see you there, my username is the same... xoxo!!

  • lol, that comment was directed to alaskautubenights

  • When the crab fell into the water I snickered... I am easly amused... :)

  • I time-lapsed my crabs, but i haven't posted them yet, but if you're easily amused, search "pop locking battle" or "amazing physics" or "amazing - real ghost caught on camera" or "ghost caught" (look for the one with the rocking chair, green vid)

  • Mine never changed shells, am i doin something wrong? I keep a sponge in their water dish, should i have 2 water dishes? they have heating pad & lamp on 1 side of the tank. Spray tank every day w/water sprayer. They love bananas, and leave chicken scraps 4 them aside from the 3 different HC foods put in their food dish. Am i doing something wrong?! I love my "little guys!" Post me, thx

  • You MIGHT be doing something wrong. But its reat you're willing to learn and try to help your crabs. You should have 2 water dishes. One for salt, and one for fresh. Both should be dechlorinated just like if you had a fish tank. Do you have a temperature and humidity gauge? Both should be around 80. Please, send me a message if you have a question about hermit crabs. I am a member of many crab sites, and love to help others.

  • lol! Cool! I might post something on here too!

  • Yes I am ZanZan from HCA =)

  • I agree w/ Beauty Shells. BTW, Beauty Shells, is that you ZanZAn!?!? This is Cheyenne from HCA!

  • Hermit crabs needs to destressed, I can't say it's hard to care also cannot say it's easy to care. They're fun pets with great personality. It's better to get 3 hermit crabs minimum, for friends and buddies reason. Sand and Moss as substrate (at least 3 in). Salt and fresh water, shells of course and fresh food the best. temperature and humidity should be 75F+ and great to have hiding and climbing places too!

  • Gosh. Singapore is high in humidity . How to solve that if i want to keep a hermit crab?

  • High humidity is actually desirable for land crabs. Different species may require different humidities but basic rule of thumb says you should keep the humidity around 70% in the crabitat.

  • how much care and time does it take into taking care and setting up for a hermit crab?

  • underwater? wont it drown?
