I think I'm the only one that notices that after the first several strokes, he wasn't even painting he was actually just wiping away a substance revealing a pre-made painting underneath. he even re-paints over it at the end, making it look like it did in the beginning.

He essentially painted over a beautiful painting, and played the whole thing backwards with his narration, spliced in with clips of him talking to the camera, to make it look like he painted the whole thing from scratch. Look carefully when he's painting and you can see the odd brush stroke movements and it looks more like he's actually wiping paint away. That's because every time his back is turned, the video is actually a reversal of what happened.

This is a reproduction of Rembrandt's "Self-portrait as the apostle Paul". The painter covered it with black and then revealed it by rubbing with dry brushes. So, when he painted over it at the end, he really just prepared it to do the reveal again.
