It's funny how quickly race comes up in discussions, granted this clip shows how unfair blacks were treated, remember back then it was easier to play a mammy then being a mammy. I can't play the race card because I'm multicultural.
Do you think the way blacks are shown these days make them classier? Degrading their women, trying to act like they are so bad ass, pimpin, gang bangin, etc? If anything blacks are making themselves look one step out of the jungle. I'm no hater or racist or even full blood anything. I just call it like i see it. When folks act civilized (like then) they get treated civilized. Go watch any rap stars video now days and tell me if you REALLY think that is civilized behavior.
@greatunclekevin "When folks act civilized (like then) they get treated civilized"
So , blacks were treated "civilized" back then? You are delusional , sir.
The fact of the matter is , whites will act barbaric and treat non whites like animals any chance they get , no matter how the non whites act. Thats just how your kind operates.
@greatunclekevin Plus , the chief mistakes by the blacks was integrating with your kind. No wonder why you people have such as fascination in MLK , and degrade true heros like Malcom x.
There is a reason why immigrants in this country dont fully assimilate and stay in their ethnic enclaves.
@BlacknesUnforgivable So you think the black culture helps itself by trying to portray themselves as "Gangstas" and thugs and abusers of women in all their videos? As for my kind, you again are incorrect because I'm not white, so you need to take your racism and stuff it. Personally I wish all you people would go back where you came from, whites, blacks and everyone else. It was YOUR type that sold YOUR type into slavery in the first place, so if you want to be mad, be mad at YOUR own kind.
I think all the women are beautiful, Dorothy and the white women, way more classier and beautiful then the black and white women around today. Don't hate and let other racist people make you racist.
@produce21 This does sound like a racist song, but it's not. It's a song that mocks southern work culture. Hoagy didn't write the song, but he was no racist.:)
Kmcru, the entire era was degrading to black people. We were treated as second class citizens regardless of how smart, intelligent or successful we were back then. That video was portraying blacks as 'lazy' individuals. Are you really to blind to see that! So what if you studied that era... that don't mean you embrace is as BEAUTIfUL!
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT : it's black people who have skills but in the front we have untalented white people and we saw blacks artists -unmixed of course- doing silly things pardon my poor english
@lTheSituation What StolenRain said is true. Sadly this era treated blacks in two ways: inferior and dangerous or naive and harmless. Either way they were looked down upon. Dorothy Dandrige, as beautiful and talented as she was could not even stay in the hotels she performed at. =( This clip seems innocent but it reinforces the mindset of the times. I love old movies but you can't deny the truth. And I'm not even black. =P
I am black and I have seen ALOT of movies and videos from this decade since I STUDIED it!!!And if this is degrading to you then this WHOLE era must have been degrading to you!!!Because pleanty of servants where played by blacks. Which I actually thank because I rest upon there shoulders since I actually want to be a director/producer/actor!!!
Calm down girl, geesh. I'm pointing out what's with wrong how our people were protrayed then, and you are blasting off at the mouth. This era still had people like Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, Dorothy, Harry Belofante, Lena Horne, Ella Fitz, Sarah Vaughn, etc who carried themselves with confidence, class, and self worth (even in the ugly racist society). This video was clearly meant to degrade and generalize the overall perception of them, which was so far off. Thats why IM upset. Why are you?
Angelfully, I understand your point of view. That perception was a continuation of the old vaudeville shows in which the African American experience suffered great race exploitation. But I lived through the early 40s as a child, and believe me those named artists rose above the status quo. Artistically, it was a great period, but only artistically!
Kmcru, you are so CONFUSED! Of course the entire era was degrading, Why do you think there was a Civil Rights Movement back then? You can be a director/producter/actor, etc (WHATEVER U WANT TO BE)..... but you don't have to blind yourself to the facts to achieve that. You don't have to put on blinders and ignore the facts. You're like the jurors that saw Rodney King being beaten and still found the police officers guiltless.
Ma'am, If the guy with the tray was dressed as the mayor of the city with Dorothy as his concerned wife concerened about spilling things on the tray, I'd stil be quite impressed as I am..
