I'm african american and I have extremely thin hair for being black. what helps is if you tease the root of your hair where you would place the clip. so then the clip would have something to hold on to. OH, then after you tease it, spray the crap out of it with hair spray. Seriously, you need to spray to the point where there is another hole in the ozone. :) I hope this helped, cause you know, i'm not a professional.
