I think many people are overlooking the fact that Mad World was a DANCE MUSIC SONG. The KEY behind the song is the Upbeat Synthetic Dance Rhythm constrasting with the Melancolic Vocals by Curt Smith. It was not originally supposed to be an acapella ballad. Sure that bum looking guy sings great slow, but the original KEY of the song is lost. Curt Smith is singing this the way it originally was. Make that bum guy sing to the upbeat synthpop dance version and he won't be that great.

@stuka52. No. Roland Orzabal released this as one of his first compositions, as a synthetic keyboard song since the beginning. He used early Arp, Roland and Korg 70s synths which were considered new and futuristic back then. Not a guitar. It was part of the Synthpop Wave (not new romantic, thats something else) that started off from Orchestral Manouver, original Human League, Moroder's disco. Synths mostly left rock music mid 80s. Synths went to underground club music, rock became all guitar.

At Gary´s mic you may be right, but it still could be the powerful sustain of his voice and high professionalism by using consonants, but Curt´s mic has such little ratio to balance the distance from singer to mic that it is quite normal, I would say ;)
