  • Just learnt about Bongi and her death, oh my gosh! Anyway their voices still thrill us to the bone. I'm originally from Kenya and lived in SouthAfrica for about 3 years, but my heart still belongs there. I listen to her songs almost on a daily basis. Long live their sonds and spirit as well. Hamba ghalshe. Ngiyakutanda khakulu batwana of SA.

  • Beautiful footage of mother and daughter. So wonderful to have this to treasure years after their passing. God bless their children/grandchildren.

  • What a beautiful collaboration.

    Rest in Peace to both

    Miriam and Bongi Makeba

  • Miriam Makeba is my Hero. Very inspring woman. How exactly does a woman keep going after what she went throuhg, where does the energy come from? I look at her and get the energy and spirit to move on despite what i consider my problems whe do not compare in any way to what she went through in life. I'm glad her only daughter left her grandchildren for her legacy. VIVA MAMA AFRICA!

  • this is simply perfetc. One of the most touching video I've ever seen... I get emotional when I see it: two powerful and great women singing together. God bless you both Miriam and Bongi wherever you are....

  • did you see the respect whilst passing on the mic to her mum.....BLESS YOUR CHILDREN BONGI AMEN

  • @teedees1712 full love and respect for her mama!

  • It must have broke her heart when her daughter died, and yet, she did not give in to defeat.

  • lalani ngoxolo maqhawe ase-Africa, niyibekile induk' ebandla.

  • I never knew that Bongi Sang and had that incredible voice. She could have made a career and a name for herself. Her mother popularity had probably overshadowed her talent. Peace to both of them.

  • if she had lived she would have been a star though. her voice is just as good as miriams. shame

  • Actually, Bongi had a recording contract and was well on her way to becoming a singing sensation like her mother. Unfortunately, her illness never allowed that to happen and she died a short while later.

  • thanks to explain that who did not know their story.

i heard that song snce i was little but i did not know a lot about it

  • Contd. In the meanwhile I realised whom is she the daughter of. I kept in mind a quiet, calm young women. So different from the dynamic singer I discovered just now !

Yes, today I suddenly wanted to see whether she made a carreer and looked on Internet. What a shock to learn about her death! And guess that in the following three years she had given birth to three children.

Great personality. What a voice !

I keep her in my heart.

  • Thanks for sharing your personal story.

  • @RaynerJM @raethymariass I just saw a documentary film about Mariam Makeba at HotDocs in Toronto that you may be interested to track down called "Mama Africa." The film contains wonderful archival footage.

  • Contd, She showed me : that was some dress for her concert so that is what she came for to Paris. It had to take place on next week Thursday in the Caveau de la Huchette, if I remember well. She gave me her name and phone number and I promised to absolutely go and see her.

I could not withstand and called. A rather annoyed, deep male voice tok the phone and did not passed it to her,And I missed the concert.

Time to time, over the past 25 years it happened to me to think about her. Contd.

  • I met Bongi Makeba in the metro in Paris. We were both sitting late in the evening at the West end-station waiting for the next train and something funny attracted our attention, and we smiled at each other. She was relaxed and sweet. I remember freckles on her face. We travelled a long way on line 1 and then even seated in a bistro for a drink. Possibly a tea. She told me that she is from South-Africa. I also asked her to tell me about what is in her paper bag. Contd

  • Amazing performance, really touching.

    Does anyone have the lyrics?

  • Bongi sounds just like mama. My god vocal cords are inheritable!!!!

  • i love bongi's dress :)

  • Africa has lost the greatest freedom fighters and vocalist par excellence! Mother africa, you will be missed in Africa and the world at large. You used your music to fight injustice. The world mourns the passing of a legend but we shall never forget you as your music lives on. To the people of South Africa, Mama lives in the hearts of so many people she touched with her music. To East Africans listen to her famous rendition of Malaika, Hapo Zamani, Kilimanjoro and Pole Mzee. RIP Mama Africa.
