  • @wickedratched duuuhhhh buhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Frikken Brian's brilliant! you can see him 'discovering' what the Beatles got from Pet Sounds - it clicked to him at 17"! And what a statement it was!

  • I just love how George sounds when he's talking about "the boys", he sounds so fatherly

  • Phil Collins...Really?!

  • @RA1DIA

Phil played on George's first solo album. Fantastic drummer in his day who got lost...

  • @RA1DIA yeah, wouldn't you have thought they'd have interviewed someone like Ray Davies, Donovan or even Pete Townshend...... i can understand Brian Wilson, but Phil Collins?!

  • @WilliamLaFlare: The Beach Boys' "Here Today" from Pet Sounds

  • What's the song at 0:57?

  • @WilliamLaFlare off the top of my head it's called "That's Not Me" from the Beach Boys' album "Pet Sounds" :)

  • @AshtonArcher those first couple of albums from Genesis back in the late 60's and early 70's are pretty cool.

  • @everlybro84 its all been a pack of lies!

  • It's a pity that useless tosser Phil Collins is a part of this show.

  • @AshtonArcher get out more

  • Damnit, George. That's not a double tracked vocal at 4:12, but the vocal fed thru a tape delay (Artificial Double Tracking).

  • @Seej1982

Don't mean to offend you or anything but George was the one who had the great luck of recording these Songs with the boys. I guess he knows better than you how he recorded that song.

  • @yokoono678 He was going deaf by this point so he most likely thought that it was double tracked. He didnt have the original session papers near him so he was going by memory, which alters as you age.

  • @ 2:42 is that john wearing paul sweater??

  • Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper, both within a year of eachother. Wish that those days would come again...

  • @semprini20 We haven't had anything come close since. The state of popular music is a mess now. We have some underground and experimental stuff which is interesting but nothing like these albums. We live in hope.

  • For all the extravagant music videos and stage shows today, the music is really quite conservative and just plain boring when compared with the experimentation and exploration done by the Beatles. Can't wait 'till the next group comes along that truly breaks new ground. It's been a long time.

  • 4:33 what song is that?

  • @H0E0M0G14 being for the benefit of mister kite

  • SGT Pepper is the greatest album of all time pet sounds is great but is nowhere near as good as SGT Pepper

  • WOW!!!! Sampling!

  • I play my guitar with my organ. Wow. What a sound.

  • can someone tell me the name of the song Morton Frazer gang is playing at the 1:18 mark? any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • @peteyc27 "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

  • 1:44 is hysterical...

  • Youtube is so nasty! Why can't it keep loading the upcoming videos and emmediatedly play them in order?

  • was it mr kite that created the circus music sound?

  • When I play "Good Morning" for my puppies they freak out at the end cuz of all the animals' sounds haha.

  • Brian Wilson sounds drunk.

  • @Kruelwanderer911 Brian Wilson suffered a stroke due to mental health issues and drug abuse some years before this documentary was aired. It showed clearly that Brian had the determination and strength to come back from the brink. After extensive rehabilitation and counselling he was able somewhat to return to his former creative self.

  • @starryian007 Wow. That is crazy

  • @Kruelwanderer911 idk why i literally laughed out loud

  • @Kruelwanderer911 hearing loss...but yea, you're right!

  • An amazing documentry its one thing to listen to these tracks but hearing them broken down into pieces it gives new life to them.

  • pet sounds destroys pepper

  • @johnowensjr1234 no NOT A CHANCE

  • @johnowensjr1234 absolutely, I can give you my personal invitation of Pet Sounds rather than pepper as I'm a musical kid myself, and _beat_ all of the other's comments.

  • The Beach Boys made use of the psychedelic music put out by the Beatles maybe its a subconscious thing but I believe under sun nothing made is new a person might be thinking what you thinking I forget the Law of Physic term they called it.

  • THE BEST

  • "...and here come the whirly bits..."

  • Amazing!!!!

    xoxo

    The Clarences

  • Brian Wilson was a genius with arrangement - within the small musical box that was his playground.

But the Beach Boys always had an incredible one-dimensionality to everything they did.

Nothing could have been further from the truth for the Beatles.

I mean, think about the difference between Love Me Do (from their debut) and Strawberry Fields (4 years later).

Now think about the difference between Surfin' Safari (from their debut) and Good Vibrations (4 years later).

  • @termsofusepolice There's a huge difference in that Brian Wilson wrote the score for "Good Vibrations", made exactly what he heard in his head translate to the paper and then onto the recording, note for note...and he's still doing it to this day. I'm not putting the Beatles down. They subconsciously fed off of each other and it worked. What came first, the chicken or the egg? God Only Knows...

  • ringo: i had nothing to do and i remembered learning chess on that album" :)

  • Rubber Soul and Revolver inspired Pet Sounds and than Pet Sounds inspired Sgt Peppers so the inspiration train can be seen.

  • god bless Brian Wilson.

  • I love listening to each of the different tracks from the songs -- so cool!

Sgt. Pepper is such an amazing album.

  • Thank God Brian is better than he was then, hopefully he can continue to approach what he was as a musical genius.

  • Has anyone else ever noticed that Brian Wilson seems metally retarded

  • he had a stroke some time in the early 90s not too long before this documentary in addition to some other health/mental issues he has dealt with.

  • aye, stoned and drunk also

  • yes.

  • @GreenyMcFleetwood are u blatantly poking fun at the stroke he had?

  • Both Paul McCartney and George Martin are unabashed fans and freinds with Brian Wilson. Martin hosted a New York City tribute to Wilson. Martin also has interviewed Wilson for a British TV special he did on pop music.

  • Good Morning is a very underrated song.

  • Everyones an expert, everyone was there, everyone knows a better way. Such a bunch of wannabes arguing over shit you only wish you knew the real answers to.

  • From this footage, it's obvious Brian Wilson suffered a stroke in the early 90's. I'm glad he's in much better shape today.

  • Now, this is very intresting. most people here gives "Pet Lovers" thumbs up, even though This has more to do with The Beatles. It's like a sign that "even more" BB fans are coming up than B fans. That kinda' thought really touches me. Wow.

  • i wish i knew how to count bars like, george ;( lol

    ive been practicing

  • I'm sorry - I love the Beach Boys.... But Im was not raised on Pet Sounds, born in `58 I only actually heard it in its entirety when I copped it off the web... Yawn... Celephane flowers of yellow and green, towering over your head... Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes and she's gone... thump thump thump...

  • Sorry boys and girls....i am as big a beatles fan as the next but have to say, with most earnestness, that pet sounds over shadows pepper in creativity, production, and overall melody. The fact it came before pepper and the beatles lifted several ideas from wilson validates this. to me, pepper isn't even their best material. the best is (not including their many non-album singles) a tie between Revolver and White Album.

  • well what about rubber soul

  • rubber soul was a transitional period for the beatles. The album was mostly of their sound up to that point with a little taste of what is to come. I wouldn't say their was anything profound or innovative about that LP other then it was a direct influence for Brian Wilson to create PS.

  • you know what fuck you why are you going around posting this same stupid comment on every documentary ok you don't like the Beatles as much as the other guy who the fuck cares.

  • It's a shame that "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was not mentioned, for The Pink Floyd were yet another influence for "Sgt. Pepper's..."

The Pink Floyd were recording in the studio at virtually the same time as The Beatles were, and in a way they would trade ideas.

I'm not denying "Pet Sounds," of course. All three of the albums I have mentioned are brilliant and timeless.

  • I have to agree.

I'm a Beatle freak and one heluva flyoyd fan.

Floyd did some amazing stuff that had to have influenced the beatles and should get credit.

  • ARGH!!!! SHOCK HORROR AT 5:18 !

In all seriousness, thanks for posting this incredible documentary.

  • ChrisForte, Pet Sounds is inferior to what? Well, it's ceirtanly superior to your limited musical knowledge and taste, I'll give you that.

  • Nice speech. It stopped being readable after the "Pet Sounds is superior to your limited musical knowledge and taste, I'll give you that." Part. Sgt. Pepper will kick the shit out of Pet Sounds for eternity. And if Sgt. Pepper is a bad taste in music then why was your dumb ass looking at this video? Let me remind you this is SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, not Pet Sounds.

  • If you don't know it. Pet Sounds inspired Pepper. The Beatles said if Pet Sounds never existed Pepper would never be created.

  • oh wow we did not know that! it SO didn't say it in the video

  • And Pet Sounds was influenced by Revolver, and I see very little in common between Revolver and Pepper.

  • You're fucking stupid. Pet Sounds is one of the most creative and influential albums of all times. Interestingly it was influenced by Rubber Soul, and it in turn spawned Sgt. Pepper.

  • You have no brain whatsoever you idiot, Pet Sounds is the most overrated album ever released. First of all

It's emotional you say? A Day in The Life, Within you without you,

It's Creative you say? Mr. Kite, Lucy in the Sky,

Sgt. Pepper has all of Pet Sounds quality and more in 4 songs. What does that tell you fucktard?

  • Were you not listening to the first 5 min of this clip it is all about your boy Paul talking about how clever, creative, wonderful Pet Sounds was.... They are both great albums great bands, and production. But when you look at it in another way Brian Wilson wrote, produced and performed all of pet sounds. Did any of the Beatles do all 3? yeah didnt think so.

  • the beatles became the band of the 20th century, period?

  • why have you got a question mark after period? thats silly .? hehe

  • the beatles are just the perfect band

    this is so inspiring

  • fascinating! Even the arrangement of the animal sounds was co-ordinated

  • So sad that John never got to live to contribute to this retrospective. I think he would have added an edge to it. Well done in his absence, but still...

  • @buggoff I always feel that way when I'm watching my Anthology set. I always wished they could've started doing the Anthology stuff in 79' then we would get some of John's true feelings painted in the picture.

  • @greatestxgift - Yeah I agree. It's a sad thing that Lennon died when the four guys were just starting to come around to talking terms. John and Paul were in touch...I heard John and George were on the outs around the time of John's death. '79 was a little too soon to look back on this. I could envision the 4 doing this project back in the late 80s on the 20th anniversary of the breakup. I think John would have done it then.

  • @buggoff If he was still alive the documentary wouldn't have been on this album

  • It's funny because John's favorite meal was Cornflakes.

  • Pet Sounds and Sgt.Peppers are the greatest Albums ever made. Lets enjoy these great pieces of music and listen to the greatest musicians of the last century!!!

  • The sound on Being for the benifit of mr kite is sick.

  • wats wrong with wilson he seems so weird?

  • i kno lol.

  • at some point he just snaped. he was the musical mastermind of the beach boys. he got depressive and socially enabled. its actually not funny but kind of tragic.

  • He had a nervous breakdown... partly because of heavy drug use. Also, he was struggling writing the Beach Boys' follow-up album to "Pet Sounds", "Smile" and then upon hearing "Sgt. Pepper" he gave up on his project and sunk into depression that he would not be able to top the album the Beatles had just made.

  • he has paranoid schzo[hrenia and is manic depressive. He was severely abused as a child. Not to mention drug use. And just look up Eugene Landy and see what that dumbass did too him.

  • Aleister Crowley gets as much credit as Brian Wilson.

  • Pet Sounds was released BEFORE Revolver snaizester

  • donde puedo comprar el dvd????????????

  • Brian Wilson, though a genius, looks like a weirdo :o

  • Sure NOW after he lost his mind. He wasn't always that way.

  • Oh, and it was Sgt. Pepper's that made him lose it. :)

  • I rather think it was a little more complicated than that.

  • tbh he looks better now tho. he has kinda sorted himself out these days

  • the guy has schizophrenia and LSD fried his brain. its really quite a shame actually.

  • That's awesome how much Paul respects the Beach Boys & Brian Wilson's production techniques. The fact that Sgt. Pepper was partially influenced by an American band is mind blowing...

  • Not quite an American Band, but an American.

Pet Sounds is an exclusive Brian Wilson achievement, it was only about to be released as a solo album.

But i believe, as for your comment, that it isnt mind blowing at all. Song writing doesnt have a nationality. It isnt black and white.

And, for those who don´t know, Pet Sounds was an attempt to equal Rubber Soul.

So they fed from each other.

  • Pet Sounds was an attempt to outdo Revolver.

  • According to Brian Wilson's sleevenotes for the 'Pet Sounds' CD, it was 'RUBBER SOUL' that triggered the making of 'Pet Sounds'.(Although, in the first version of 'Pet Sounds' I owned, he got the year wrong; writing he heard 'Rubber Soul'(the American version, that is)in December 1966(not in 1965, which is correct), and then immediately started working on 'Pet Sounds'. For the newest edition, the mistake was corrected.)

'Pet Sounds' was released three months BEFORE 'Revolver', in May 1966.

  • God Only Knows what the world would be like without Brian Wilson and The Beatles! Hail... Sgt. Peppers!

  • no kidding, I can listen to them both day or night

  • Great vid for the study of Sgt Pepper and where the beatles got their inspirations.
