But to Desert detroiter, Motown had so much talent,Berry assembled such a music factory at Hitsville, its like almost to hard to Comprehend all that talent, From
that Sexy Mary Wells to...well there is not enough space here to mention it here...and That incredible base Player James Jamerson, hes there on all the intros of almost every great hit from Motown...Mind bogleing....As Much as I love my Phly sound it couldnt touch Motown, in the amount of talent and the # of hits....Im speechless.
@jjs499 True..but Philly had a far more lush and romantic style, even in the 60's. They used strings much more than Motown did, and their distinctive sound is owed to those incredible orchestral arrangements. Motown was all funk. And let's not forget, Philly had a lot of artists that we don't even think of....Patty Labelle, Tammy Terrell, Norman Harris, Billy Paul..they had a lot of talent over there in the 60's, but they didn't have the fame that Motown artists had.
Nothin like the original jams. This was my song lol couldn't get enough of it...UNITED! The lyrics back then were on jam and the lead's voice just pulled you in. I am ashamed to say I never knew the lead singer's name, but just mention the Intruders and I was all in
going out to dokey/de/calecia/13 tu wife de blythe/town/baddgirl rest in peace until the lord calls me to be with you dokey love you were going to be united like you wanted when the lord calls me
I Love this song it brings back happy memories of junior high school crushes, being with someone special, it makes you just want to hold the one you love close and dance. The Intruders music will always be number one in my book and remind me of happy memories of yesterday and today! Thank You for your Music! Los Angeles,CA
I was, admittedly, stupid as a kid. Even though I loved this song, I thought they were singing about Johnny Unitas, the Baltimore Colts' QB at the time. Yikes. I'm going out today and get the Intruders' greatest hits. Wouldn't it be great if TV-1 did an "Unsung" on them instead of groups like the o'jays, who were very much "Sung"?
I could listen to this song all day! WHAT AM I SAYING?? I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS SONG ALL DAY lol several times!!! I love it :) If marriage was a melody, this would definitely be it! I love it
This song was one of the songs on my wedding video . So silky smooth . Little Sonny sang this song. This was music . What happened to soul music. maybe it will come back one day.
I'm from Detroit, but I've got to tell you...many a nite back then and today, I jam to the Philadelphia sound. Philly has produced some great groups and music. Have you guys checked out the ebonys as well. Either way, I'll say it again, this is called singing.
@robsylspiller LOL...fellow Detroiter here. I always say that Motown ruled the 60's, but the 70's belong to Philly. Something about the way they produced their music with the lush strings and horn arrangements just take your breath away.
@desertdetroiter Yeah, to some extent your right. Im from Philly, saw them live 2xs in 67,70. But Philly's Intruders had most of their hits in the 60's, xcept for "Ill always love my Momma", and a fw others. But the 70's brought us The Stylistics,Teddy Prendergrass, Blue majic, Billy Paul. Also coming out of the fabulous 60's were the great falsetta's of the Delfonics. from west Philly. One of the huge philly sounds, that were NOT wrten or produced by Gamble and Huff. So Much talent in Phlly
@jjs499 Definitely. Everyone always thinks of Gamble and Huff when they think Philly, but Thom Bell and Linda Creed were just as good. Not to mention some of the lesser unknown cats like Jerry Magovoy, who produced Garnet Mims...another Philly Soul great that everyone forgets about. Philly producers were amazing. That town was overloaded with talent back in the day. Kinda like Chicago back in the late 50's and early 60's.
I have the "United" single from MUSIC MAKERS, it's the same song but just an insturmental before they added the lyrics and strings. Released on the Gamble label (Kenneth Gamble).
This is as good as it gets in the Philly Sound. Me and my Mrs. been united for 36 years! I thank God and I recommend being United just like the Intruders sing it.
The brothers of old knew how to convey the message of love. this art is lost! I hope the young brothers would listen and learn the art of conveying love songs .
This has always been a song to walk down the isle to......god bless the intruders who cane from across the Hudson river in Jersey to really bless us with heavenly music.
Peaches and Herb couldn't touch these Players with a 100 ft pole. These kind of singing groups will never happen again, appreciate and enjoy. 77dcarter/glennlaroy.
Firstly, listen you prick, a opinion is an opinion, and my opinion is that Peaches & Herbs version is better and nothing will change that. Secondly, did i say i didn't like this version? I think not. Yes, overall The Intruders where a better group, but Peaches & Herbs did justice on their version. So you sit back and enjoy before you give yourself an aneurysm!!!
Don't send me anymore e-mails sissy; I got your prick PUNK. I hate to lower myself to assholes such as yourself; however it takes that sometimes.
Anything you have to say from here, I will let it rest on your head. You might want to begin to address you underlying hidden areas that displays a lack of integrety CHUMP.
@Gr8LilLady Little Sonny Had such a soulfull voice, almost like he was in Pain, lik in some of his songd you couild feel his Pain when u lstnd to his songs. Trally an under rated group. Gambel and Huff's early sucess, sort of put them on the Map.THeis gem then Came, "Together", anoyher great sound, so msany by the intruders. Thn there is my other Favorite Philly Group The Mighty Delfonics..so smooth, sexy falsettas, What a sound... and the had Thom Bell ,[I think].
No Debate Needed. This music was intended for guys who wanted to tear up the dance floor on fast jams and get a slow dance and a phone number at the end of the party. My respects to 86pimp3 but without the intruders and the rest of the motown sound there wouldn't be no rap/hiphop. Beautiful music like this is what made all artists of today..
Believe that all you want but people today still talk about how The Motown sound has influenced artist to this day. The Philly Sound will always be second best.
I love Motown, nothing like it. Having said that the Philly sound was the Philly sound and there is no second best. They were both unique in and of themselves. No one had a voice like little Sonny from the Intruders the same as no one had a voice like Smokey.

Not to take anything away from The Motown Sound, but I prefer The Sound of Philadelphia. Philly grooves involved more lush arrangements and beautiful orchestration, whereas Motown incorporated more of a confined house band (The Funk Brothers). Both were good, but something about that Philly Sound that just had more substance to my ears.
sorry but, the Topps sound had gotten stale and dull by 1973, Lil sonny and the Intruders style was so much more fresh. as was the whole Philly style altogether.
I love this song, when I think about my first love, I think about this song. My I loved him for a very very very long time. I think I still do. But life goes on, but he will always hold a very special place in my heart. Love you PD
I saw them live and planned a proposal to my girl on this song. Had the rock in my pocket and everything! Well, I waited and waited. No United. Then Lil Sonny finally dismissed the group as he apologized to the audience for not doing United; they had run over schedule. Well, I was disappointed but also cautioned. I took it as a sign and chose not to propose that evening. Never said anything about it. Turns out later that it would have been a huge mistake had things gone according to plan. UNITED
Can any group from TSOP to MoTown beat the intrufer...Levi Stubbs would be hard pressed to bring the Four Tops to the harmony and sounds that the Intriders could bring to bear on a song....Plus, United and Together just drive women insane....All men thank the Intruders for these songs!!!
man, this has to be one of my favourite tunes by the Intruders, just a beautiful song. You can tell its a Philly Soul tune by the gorgeous strings. If I ever get married, this will be my first dance with my husband, just like hardtops805!
My wife and I had this beautiful song be the first that we danced as husband and wife. It is a wonderful song that now brings good memories and good feelings to my wife and I. We were actually maried in june so she was my beautiful June bride.
