that Sexy Mary Wells to...well there is not enough space here to mention it here...and That incredible base Player James Jamerson, hes there on all the intros of almost every great hit from Motown...Mind bogleing....As Much as I love my Phly sound it couldnt touch Motown, in the amount of talent and the # of hits....Im speechless.

@jjs499 True..but Philly had a far more lush and romantic style, even in the 60's. They used strings much more than Motown did, and their distinctive sound is owed to those incredible orchestral arrangements. Motown was all funk. And let's not forget, Philly had a lot of artists that we don't even think of....Patty Labelle, Tammy Terrell, Norman Harris, Billy Paul..they had a lot of talent over there in the 60's, but they didn't have the fame that Motown artists had.

I'm from Detroit, but I've got to tell you...many a nite back then and today, I jam to the Philadelphia sound. Philly has produced some great groups and music. Have you guys checked out the ebonys as well. Either way, I'll say it again, this is called singing.

But Philly's Intruders had most of their hits in the 60's, xcept for "Ill always love my Momma", and a fw others. But the 70's brought us The Stylistics,Teddy Prendergrass, Blue majic, Billy Paul. Also coming out of the fabulous 60's were the great falsetta's of the Delfonics. from west Philly. One of the huge philly sounds, that were NOT wrten or produced by Gamble and Huff. So Much talent in Phlly

Not to mention some of the lesser unknown cats like Jerry Magovoy, who produced Garnet Mims...another Philly Soul great that everyone forgets about. Philly producers were amazing. That town was overloaded with talent back in the day. Kinda like Chicago back in the late 50's and early 60's.

I love Motown, nothing like it. Having said that the Philly sound was the Philly sound and there is no second best. They were both unique in and of themselves. No one had a voice like little Sonny from the Intruders the same as no one had a voice like Smokey.

Respectfully I think you're wrong. The Philly sound was the first to incorporate strings in the back drop of their music. You hear the string section in this song. Motown didn't do that, that came out of philly. When one thinks of Motown you think of the middle sixties to late sixties. By the seventies Motown had begun to fade where as the Philly sound continued strong thru the seventies with Gamble & Huff.I loved Motown but the Philly sound was just as innovative.

Not to take anything away from The Motown Sound, but I prefer The Sound of Philadelphia. Philly grooves involved more lush arrangements and beautiful orchestration, whereas Motown incorporated more of a confined house band (The Funk Brothers). Both were good, but something about that Philly Sound that just had more substance to my ears.
