Ofcourse Jim was not a shaman in the literal sense. But why are you mixing music with politics? Noone "took" R&B from anyone; it's called art you know, people always have and always will influence each other; no matter what label or "genre" you put on art it always remains on a higher level than human disputes.
This song is the ultimate symbol of what the doors were; Jim was a modern-day shaman, and I'm saying that in all seriosity (I'll provide explanation if asked for), and the Doors were, ultimately a blues-fueled rockband. This track voices all of Jim's pain within this world, and the soul of all of them on their respectvie instruments.
ΠΡΑΤΤΩ ΚΑΤΑ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ - ACTING ACCORDING TO THE INNER DEAMON. Acting according to what feels right with my consequence. It's a quote from Socrates, Plato tells us about it (Plato's Sybosium 203).
@hornyunic0rn The lyrics from the song "Universal Mind".
Also, keep in mind the inscription on his tomb "ΚΑΤΑ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ", written in Greek. It was engraved many years after his mysterious death (nobody ever saw him dead).
All these, show the unquestionable intelligence, a true artist who swings between reality and imagination, who managed to overcome his own self and feeled the universal mind!
@hornyunic0rn hahhahaah! OK! I'll try to make a translation for you! In the land of the lost angels, will he be writing poems?
Morrison seeked the Doors connecting visible and invisible! He came in contact with Philosophy. He got inspired by the native American shamans, the Wiccans, the English poet William Blake, Nietzshe and the Ancient Greek philosophers.
I always feel like this song is about Jim. "There will never be another one like you. There will never be another one who can do the things you do." There will never be another individual like Jim ever again.
I want to play the guitar like Krieger, so I made a slide out of a brace I got from when I broke my thumb, and packing tape. It works pretty well. DIY rock and roll.
optical promise, you'll be dead to hell before i'm born, shure thing, the only solution isn't it amazing. HAVE A NICE BIG SLEEP JIM, I'LL SEE YOU THERE
@celebrant9 he didn't even play a little piano, that was ray manzarek :) he didn't even know how to read notes but he did have the right influences & poetic capacities for his role in the band, obviously
@21lovefreak it's alright...listening to The Doors will send you on an amazing journey...I began listening when I was 14 as well. Sent me into The Beatles and Donovan and so much much more....
@21lovefreak right on !!!! i wish i had an open mind at that age. But yeah Jim Morrison believed that he wasn't musically inclined. His lyrics were "poetry". And he didn't even think he could sing!!!!!!! Robby Krieger was the guitarist. But Jim's voice was amazing we can all agree on that !!!!!!
@21lovefreak im glad that ur heading in the right direction with ur music influences but u couldnt posibly understand what "the doors" or many bands from that music era wanted to say, maybe when ur older i hope u dont let yourself be led astray :)

@celebrant9 they were so seamless in with what each one contributed to what we Love, the smile on our face and the music of The Doors in our ears. Peace
This album was terrible other than this song and Wishful Sinful. I've always thought this song was about Jim loosing his unborn son because of an abortion.
@jaysonvalentine After all his 'aventures', didn't he witnessed a lot of abortions ? Or are you particularly referring to the Patricia case ? I thought that he was not concerned by the baby.
He sings about the shaman who came in his head and people must understand that it's not possible to live in a 'normal' world with the soul of a shaman. Jim only could have made a start (born) when the shaman in his head is dead. That's my opinion
@vereniki88 Επίσης το όνομα του συγκροτήματος προέρχεται από τις "Πύλες της Ενόρασης" ("The Doors of Perception") του Aldous Huxley. Από εκεί έρχεται και η αναφορά στον William Blake, όπως σωστά λες, με το έργο του "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell".
it almost seems like the doors made there own genre of music cause ive never heard of a band that plays blues, rock& roll, spanish, and i dont know what u would categorize the rest as. i just call it the doors genre

@JordanTBoehm : Guess what? I wrote that five months ago, listened more than once to "The Soft Parade," and I think it was unfairly criticized. Just because it's a totally different style doesn't mean it was a bad album. I think it's awesome now!
@lemurianchick I think Soft Parade is a very misunderstood album, It wasn't meant to be rock or Psychadelic, Is it one of their best definitely not but it's way better then the Post-Morrison albums, I think the Songs Soft Parade, Touch Me, Tell All The People,Shaman's Blues,Wild Child are all incredible songs and makes this album a worthy buy. Not too mention, get the 40th yr anniversary and Whiskey and Mystics and Men, GREAT SONG
@smurfman95 : I agree with you. I changed my opinion of it, actually. I actually LISTENED to the whole enchilada, not just a song here or there. The horns created a negative impression in some fans' minds because they probably thought it wasn't "hard" enough. And who cares? (By the way, Janis Joplin had similar criticism when she included a brass section on one of her later albums).
most likely Jim is talking about the Shaman that followed him his whole life, a reincarnated indian who was sent to follow him slavishly everywhere he went.
out on the meadows while you run the fields......sure thing, bridesmaids, the only solution isn't it amazing? lament to Pam during one of their many seperations?

@celebrant9 its addressed either to pamela or that women he dated after highschool which broke his heart and mad ehim want to move around...she actually wound up watching him on t.v. from a trailer park....
Έτσι αντιλαμαβάνομαι ως πικρό τον στίχο "I'm the freedom man/ that's how lucky I am".
i dont know what it is. But the music, the words, the whole thing, especially the organ, i can relate to. Im not explaining it right. Its not just music, its life, good and bad.
@celebrant9 The timing of the song, the feel of it, the "story" feel behind it as well as many many other Doors songs...Nick Cave seems to have been heavily influenced by Morrisons creative style. Cave has mentioned Morrison in a few interviews but in an unflattering light, which leads me to believe in what I am saying even more.
@celebrant9 No need for thanks, it was my pleasure to answer. You wouldnt happen to know if there are any videos of The Doors performing "Not To Touch The Earth", would you? In my opinion that is the greatest song of all time, I hope that when I am dying that song is the last thing I hear as I leave this earth.
As far as I know, unfortunately no,there aren't any.Yet at least,'cause I know for a fact that there are A LOT of Doors taped concerts that have not surfaced yet.I don't know who to blame though.
Hmmm,I probably have to listen to it a bit more,'cause it didn't really make an impression but perhaps it'll grow into me(it has the potential,I mean I enjoy this style in music). The lyrics however are pretty cool.
All three of them(Krieger,Manzarek and Densmore) were overshadowed by Jim, since he was the singer and the performer, that's only natural in my opinion.
But if you have ears, you know that they are TOP CLASS musicians. And "Shaman's blues" is just another proof.;)
Absolutely no doubt about it Celebrant9, The Doors were a 4-piece, the talent at work in this band is just phenomenal & only someone with the charisma, magic and talent to match could lead such a band. "There will never be another one....." how true. Many imitate but none come near. Each member of this band is an exceptional musician but Jim was just something else altogether.....may he & Pam be forever in peace wherever they are.....

One of my most favorite Doors songs of all time!!

One of my favourite Doors tunes, what a shame there arent any live or demo versions. Nice Cave made a career out of this song.
HateDisease 2 years ago 2
Who knows, they may not have been released yet.Let's cross our fingers, lol.
By the way, who's Nice Cave?
celebrant9 2 years ago
@celebrant9 lol, ooops! Nick Cave...pardon the mistake.
HateDisease 2 years ago
Oh,it's OK,that's what I thought, but you never know,right.
I'm not familiar with Cave's music,so what exactly do you mean by that?
celebrant9 2 years ago
@celebrant9 The timing of the song, the feel of it, the "story" feel behind it as well as many many other Doors songs...Nick Cave seems to have been heavily influenced by Morrisons creative style. Cave has mentioned Morrison in a few interviews but in an unflattering light, which leads me to believe in what I am saying even more.

"Cave has mentioned Morrison in a few interviews but in an unflattering light, which leads me to believe in what I am saying even more."
Haha,I really like the way you think!
I guess I'll just have to listen to Cave sometime...
Thanks for taking the time to answer.;)
celebrant9 2 years ago
@celebrant9 No need for thanks, it was my pleasure to answer. You wouldnt happen to know if there are any videos of The Doors performing "Not To Touch The Earth", would you? In my opinion that is the greatest song of all time, I hope that when I am dying that song is the last thing I hear as I leave this earth.
HateDisease 2 years ago
As far as I know, unfortunately no,there aren't any.Yet at least,'cause I know for a fact that there are A LOT of Doors taped concerts that have not surfaced yet.I don't know who to blame though.

People lacking the motivation to get their Doors stuff online? Blame their pot dealers..

@celebrant9 and what did you think of it?
sigimaster14 1 year ago
Hmmm,I probably have to listen to it a bit more,'cause it didn't really make an impression but perhaps it'll grow into me(it has the potential,I mean I enjoy this style in music). The lyrics however are pretty cool.
celebrant9 1 year ago
yeah the lyrics are awesome, im not a big fan of the music to but with such lyrics im sold:P

Krieger was over shadowed by Morrison, but really he holds his own.
nikesvvoosh 2 years ago 3
All three of them(Krieger,Manzarek and Densmore) were overshadowed by Jim, since he was the singer and the performer, that's only natural in my opinion.
But if you have ears, you know that they are TOP CLASS musicians. And "Shaman's blues" is just another proof.;)
celebrant9 2 years ago
Absolutely no doubt about it Celebrant9, The Doors were a 4-piece, the talent at work in this band is just phenomenal & only someone with the charisma, magic and talent to match could lead such a band. "There will never be another one....." how true. Many imitate but none come near. Each member of this band is an exceptional musician but Jim was just something else altogether.....may he & Pam be forever in peace wherever they are.....
