oh god .. bad memories!! Driving to trinidad Colorado from new mexico and I hit a boulder and spent hours in a ditch with my mom and little brother. this was when we were moving from florida to colorado.. like on july 4th 2010
You stopped filming into the tunnel. I LOVE that tunnel. I will ALWAYS love that tunnel. Seriously, i may never take this ride again. I love your video.
Just getting out of So Cal as well as Chicagoland with all the heavy rail traffic, usually screws everything up right away and sets back the schedule. I remember sitting in Jolliette for something like 2.5 hours one day on the westbound SW Chief!
Great job! Appreciated your wisely zooming out and in at intervals.
This all started with a Google map search of Raton N.M., home of Bennie Woolley, a horse trainer who knocked every racing snob and handicapper on his/her ass on May 2nd 2009 when his Mine That Bird won the KY Derby at 50-1.
(I broke even and am grateful. Deeply.)
1971 or '72: I hitchhiked from Boulder CO down to Albuquerque NM.
I shot some vestibule footage myself back in 1991 from aboard the Broadway Limited as we were rolling across Pennsylvania and navigating around Horseshoe Curve. The crew was very understanding of my hobby of railroad photography. I need to post it here soon. I understand that on most trains today, due to liability issues, they are hesitant to let anyone do this. Yet, like you did, if the window is already open, I still like to at least get a shot or two when no crew members are present!!
Very cool. Neat how you can hear the 4 cycle diesels of those GE locomotives. Great that you could get this view. Back in the 70s attendents on the long distance trains, generally, didn't mind vestibule riding with the upper door open especially for camera toters. Now with all of the liability issues, thats another fun feature that's become part of the past. Glad you got to enjoy the experience. Thanks for posting and God Bless.
To answer your question, I did not open the vestibule windows, and there was no attendant present. I believe there had been some kind of horrendous problem with one of the heads and ventilation was needed.
road it last week .. was about 10 minutes late into Los Angeles and about 5 to 10 minutes late on the return trip into Chicago
