  • This was the most wonderful show ever made. Few examples from tv could approach the sort of morality taught on The Andy Griffith Show. There'll never be another like it.

  • This is a timeless classic. Good fun, clean comedy! I watched it growing up and glad my kid can enjoy it now too!

  • 85 years old now

  • what great friends!!

  • Matt Lauer, before he ended up looking like a gas station attendent. How quaint.

  • Everthing these men touched was gold ; just pure gold. I know that world will soon go back to this and I can hardly wait for the beauty of it all again.

  • Rip don the sheriff!

  • The eight people who disliked this must be fans of REALLY quality TV ... like "The Jersey Shore."

  • I don't remember Matt Lauer having hair. What a hack, too.

  • @vantalge Speak for yourself. Conservatives are alot kinder than the mopey, dopey liberals I know. They are not usually the ones wishing evil on others, buddy. bsd300d is probably another hateful lib posing as a disgruntled conserv. I've had rocks thrown at me by lefties for speaking my mind in a free country! They spit on my brother when he came back from Nam. Colleges won't let a conservative speak! Who's REALLY the narrow-minded one--huh?? RIP Don Knotts--we love you sooo!! Best show ever!!!

  • St. Peter has now retired from his duties at The Pearly Gates with full peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that Barney Fife now stands vigil. With ticket book & pen close at hand, gun at his side, and bullet in his pocket, Barney stands ready to carefully scrutinize the records of the scofflaws who skipped putting a dime in the parking meter, or the town hooligans who littered the streets, or the outlaws who dared to imbibe in their barnyard stills.

R.I.P Don. Thanks for the joy!!

  • STUPID questions.

  • Why would anyone respond to such silly comments like this unleash....character???

  • What few people know is that the Andy Griffith Show was a spin off of The Danny Thomas Show.

There was an episode of that show where Danny Thomas gets pulled over for speeding and it's Sherriff Andy Griffith that pulls him over. And Thomas is brought into the courthouse that was more of a barn than a courthouse. And Griffith was both the Sherriff and Justice of the Peace.

I believe it was Thomas that noticed Griffith's stand up and offered him his own show..which was a success.

  • This interviewer should have done a little more research...

  • You have got to see Any Griffith in Billy Bob Thorton's DADDY AND THEM. In one scene, Andy, who plays the daddy, says "Son-of-a-bitch". Then he tells Billy Bob to keep his pecker in his pants or as he puts it, "Keep your horse in the barn."

  • Andy Griffin was the best show on television and to me it still is one theold time favorite

Don Knotts was the funniest guy ever.It was no Andy without Don and no Don without Andy. These guys are the best and they came in my home often with

laughter my children came to love the Andy Griffin show.

  • @mothertruth2 Gotta' wonder what might have happened if Don Knotts and Lucille Ball had ever starred together in a movie or television series.

  • Two amazing men...God Bless them.

  • If you watched the earliest "Andy Griffith" shows, Andy Taylor was the comedian and Barney more of the straight man! I guess they realized that reversing roles made for a better show.

  • CALL these old shows whatever this stinkin rap and Gaga generation wants to - but I know I can sit my little girl in front of these old shows and the values, humor, and lack of swearing is a safe place for her to enjoy her childhood. Of course, the kids will only watch as good as the parents do, so the blame is for the irresponsibility of parents.....

  • @firebirdhome Amen!

  • so mayberry was a real town that was used for the series? I thought it was entirely fictional

  • @Strefanasha

It was a movie set. If you look up andy griffith show you can find the pictures of when they were making the show.

  • @taledarkside thanks. i did always think so but a comment on this video had me wonder otherwise. I was a child in the 1960's and remember all these shows with nostalgia and affection

  • Boy, have things changed since Mayberry.

  • My all-time favorite tv comedy. I watch it daily. And yes Captmiloman I DO REMEMBER "Salvage 1"...I really enjoyed it (while it lasted). Andy and Don were great actors and great people as well. God bless them both.

  • Anyone remember Andy's short lived TV series Salvage 1?

  • We won't see the likes of Don Knotts again.

  • @noland628

Too bad for you. You're missing something that won't be around anymore because of narrow-minded people like you.

  • Hello type in "Ron Howard Palace" listen to "opie" sing "Lady" and "Reason to Believe

  • Thank you mr knotts R I P

  • Google Hells best kept secret

  • Honestly, it's like Matt Lauer has never seen the show. Seriously asking about major crime in Mayberry?! Plus other things. Tries to play it off, but I think he's 'pumping sunshine'. Hard to believe from a guy who works in the television business.

  • The host is so lame.. what a fake

  • What a kid Matt Lauer was!

  • Barney sure did have the best bullet maintenance. His bullet shines and shines!!

  • I still watch it today when it's on. Great show.

  • Two fine and humble gentlemen...

  • @unleashthecookie you obviously are looking to arouse a reaction out of someone. You dont deserve it. But i would like to tell you that you are a disgusting human being. You are obviously a middle school age person with no life and no clue. I hope you die. And thats not a joke.

  • @MrOutlawCountry Ease on up there Barney, and take the bullet out of your gun. You know how Otis gets when he tries the hard store bought stuff.

  • @unleashthecookie - Who in the living hell is going to care about comments made from a (probably 6 year old) little bastard who calls himeslf "unleash the cookie." Sounds like something from Sesame Street. Gosh, you must have slaved for a full 40 seconds to come up with a name as juvenile (big surprise), stupid (well, obviously) and ugly (one can bet you're certainly a mirror-cracker yourself) as that. Unleashthecookie- what a scary, big-tough-he-man you must be, you pathetic gay dick.

  • @unleashthecookie You've got some nerve being this disrespectful to these great actors. Obviously, you've never enjoyed true talent. I'm 17 and I'll proudly admit that I watch The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock with great pride. These are fine Christian men who I will get to meet one day.

  • @unleashthecookie Center-of-attention deficit disorder?

Well, you got the attention. It's unanimous. You got leashed, little cookie.

Run along back to your time-out corner. The adults are talking.

  • @unleashthecookie Dammit Otis. You've been drinking that hard stuff from out of town again. You shoulda' know'd better by now.

G'won now. Get in your cell. It's gonna be an awful hangover for you tomorrow, so get your rest. I'll have Aunt Bee make something in the morning for it.

  • 1996 this is old

  • The Andy Griffith Show is a classic that more and more people love as the years go by.

Part of the reason is because more and more people want to live in a town like Mayberry.

The biggest reason is that it is a great show.

    Nothing better.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Andy Griffith's pathological jealousy of Don Knotts left Don liompet.Too bad. The result was that Mayberry became a Soviet Potemkin Vlige that trained Lee Harvey amd other useful heroes.

  • Anyone notice the Volkeswagon Beetle in the background during that clip where Barney is writing out the ticket?

  • @Autobotsdie the beetle has been around sence the 40s. its not really outta place.

  • Matt Lauer got it in reverse Aunt Bee lived in Andy's house.

  • Mark of a great show...damn near 50 years later and it has not went off the air!!!

  • Why Did Andy Lose his Marbles??

  • "BEST COMEDY DUO BACK IN THE DAY"

  • haha nobrain dot dk

  • A communist and a pervert!! Who would have thunk andy and barney were such SCUM!!

  • bsd300d you're a moron

  • sad that 'mr old slacker' is an idiot

  • Andy Griffith Show is my favorite Black and White tv show ever it was funny as hell

  • i would have loved to meet don knotts.

  • @bsd300d You represent the conservatives well! Just a bunch of narrow-minded, ignorant, greedy and fearful extremists.

  • @bsd300d go fuck yourself, i hope you get hit by a bus you fucking loser

  • @bsd300d lol

  • Great!!

  • Has Matt Lauer always looked like a douche? RIP Don Knotts.

  • @4thandinches does your douche look like him..mine doesn't

  • i was born in 87 but have watched this show literally my whole life. we always watched it as a kid and still watch it today since it comes on tvland. barneys so funny

  • You look at Don Knotts face. I mean his expression and hust laugh.

  • ...this put a smile on my face and a warmmm fuzzzzy in my heart

thank you for sharing this video

  • Wonderful,.... a Cop should only be Andy Griffith, One for Love! and Love only is the way to make your world the one you want to live in with no regret(s) peace and Everything flows in Beauty, Love and nothing else can save us, but our love.... :)

  • Damn, Matt had a full set of hair. LOL! Been so long I had forgot he had any.

  • The Andy Griffith Show is always the best! My mom always watches that and I watch it on occasion I loved Opie and all of them really it was such a feel good cozy show. Haha look at Matt's hair!!!!

  • Damn, Lauer the liar used to have hair?

  • Andy sold his Soul at his Old age to Obama to buy into this Socalistis Health Care mess

  • I am not old enough to remember when this show first came on or am I old enough to remember when the show ended or am I old enough to remember when the Tv movie came out. But I do remember watching tvland and seeing the RIP Don Knotts and all the reruns of the show. I fell in love with the show and I did not know who Don Knotts was until a little while later. So I never really felt the pain some had of losing Barney. But when Andy leaves us I will be sad. On the bright side we will have Ron.

  • Sadly, Andy must have forgotten the lesson taught on one of the TV seriies. A young man upset a vefetable truck and he spent time in jail. While he was there it was portrayed that bailing someone out was not the proper lesson. Now Andy in real life supports the greatest bail out man alive! (Obama) I guess the reality has left his mind of pretence .......

  • great OLD tv

  • I haven't met anyone who didn't like Andy and Barney and the show in whole. Young or old - The Andy Griffith Show was a hit for everybody. It had everything. Even listening to the cast singing, like a one big happy family. I enjoyed some episodes when they end the show with singin' and dancin'. 'Cause when it finished ... I ended up whistlin' as well .... Thank you Andy and Don,(and the whole cast) for inviting me to visit Mayberry each week.

  • I didn't know Andy put out a CD ... I gotta look for this one!

  • Two great men of a lost era. Don Knotts taught us to laugh at ourselves. Andy Griffith is still a giant amoung men. When he leaves us, it will be a sad day, but he and Mr. Knotts will always be with us.

  • When was this interview done? Thanks.

  • @czarjjna3

Err why are people lazy. This info was in the information section:

"Matt Lauer interviews Don Knotts & Andy Griffith on The Today Show March 4, 1996"

  • r.i.p. Don Knotts

  • the one and only best show ever! im 44 now and i t-vo that show everyday! god bless don knotts may he rest in peace.

  • Thanks gotch09. I sure do love TAGS. Barney didn't move to Mount Pilot. He moved to Raleigh and worked in the police dept, fingerprint division. Yes, Warren replaced Barney, for the 1965-66 season. He was played by stand up comedian Jack Burns. The chemistry that was so rich between Andy and Barney was not there with Andy and Warren. Andy had no deputy in the last 2 seasons, 1966-1968.

  • If you love Andy copy and paste this link after utube and enjoy some of Andy's stand up comedy =) watch?v=0jxppw0CziQ

  • The perfect TV show - characters, writing, theme song. Unforgettable !

  • Pure dumb.

Nothing like watching an idiot yankee trying to comprehend such things as...character.

  • @tonysshadow Who still says "yankee"? Isn't that "divisive"? I thought we were all "Americans",hmmmm.... And you're a "former Marine"? Right. A REAL Marine knows ONCE a Marine ALWAYS a Marine. Not "ex" ,"former","used to be". Yeah....right.

  • The greatest tv program ever. Thank you Andy, Barney, Aunt Bea, Opie, Thelma Lou, Helen, Otis Campbell, Gomer, Goober, Floyd, John Masters, Clara Edwards...and all the other residents who will forever live in the perfect American town of Mayberry NC. I have been watching since the beginning and still watch and enjoy on DVD today.

  • @68lincoln Maybe you can help me. You seem to be Andy educated. After Barney left for Mount Pilot, there was another deputy on. I think his name was Warren? When did he join the cast and how was he on the show? I know this may be a little obscure.

  • i have all the seasons on dvd, i just LOVE this classic show

  • Happy 84th birthday, Andy Griffith!

  • going to mt airy tomorrow to visit andy griffith museum!!can't wait!!love this show!!!!!!!!

  • I miss Don Knotts

  • Two and Half Men should do a spoof on the Andy Griffith Show....

  • Isn't this the guy from matlock??

  • Matt not only had a full head of hair back then, but his cheeks were full also. He sure has changed. If I start losing my hair, I'm getting a toupee! lol

  • they're a class act. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

  • Wow, that singing plot was funny, and really clever

  • Aunt B was the 1st to pass away. It was sad coz she had no family or friends really. They found her body in a old run down house. According to the reports on the News they found a Nash Rambler in the garage that was never driven that was a gift to her from Andy Griffith when she left the show.

  • There was just a marathon on today opposite golf, and I chose Andy and the boyz...

  • a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8 DUO

  • Absolutely Wonderful!

I don't think it should ever go off the air.

  • Nip it in the bud Matt

  • wow matt so young

  • to bad people can't learn family values from this tv show.

    great show.

  • i know realy.

  • @taledarkside Amen to that!

  • R.I.P. Don Knotts and long live Andy Griffith

  • Awesome video, My #1 favorite show - simply classic.

  • This show was unforgettable!! However, once Barney was gone, so was the show. I have watched these a hundred times and still laugh at Barney.

  • lol thanks for being light hearted.

i put that jokingly, cause i said it to my friend who was over, and i was prepared for some douchebag to be like "no shit gtfo" or something.

  • The greatest American show ever.

  • Holy crap, the most important revelation in this video is that Matt used to have a full head of hair. lol

  • this was before he died.

  • @funkeemonkee3214 Really?!?! This was BEFORE he died? Wow, thanks for the info.. I NEVER would have guessed.

  • I had the pleasure to meet and interview Andy and Don -- they were both incredibly kind and gracious. Just like I hoped they would be.

  • did Matt never watch the show or something!

"Did you ever use your gun?"

    GOD!

  • Let's not forget Barney's "One Bullet" theory!

  • Two of the best!!

  • cool interview

  • aunt B lived with andy what was this guy talking about oO

  • I love these 2 chaps

  • Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I heard that.

  • We need to go back as fast as possible, and loose the thug...............

  • Wonderful video!

  • Such a great show. I'll always remember the greatest episodes. Always funny. Best show in history really.

  • Even in his old age, Don Knotts still look handsome! We miss you, Don!

  • Where's the full interview? Don's the man!

  • I <3 ANDY GRIFFITH

  • Yeah he was only 69, now (2009) he's 83

  • Hate to break the news, Knotts has been dead for close to 4 years now.

    He was 81

    RIP Don Knotts

  • I look at Don Knotts, and I look at the film actors of today. For the life of me, I can think of no one living today who could fill his shoes.

This show was called "The Andy Griffith Show", but in reality, Don Knotts was the one who made this show what it was. Even Andy Griffith has acknowledged this point.

  • He's only SIXTY-NINE in this clip? He looks 90!

  • Exactly my thought, at first I thought he was saying 96!

  • Andy Griffith Show discussed in great new bio (All About Jeffrey Hunter) at amazon!

  • andy griffith lives in my town

  • WOW!! Matt had hair then...R.I.P. Don Knotts..The show wasn't the same when he left.

  • I agree

  • What sweet men - we sure do miss them! Rest in peace :)

  • Lauer is such an asshat!

  • I think it is a great interview!

  • barney your the best character in the andy griffith show.the big house is the funniest episode ever.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love AGS, I watch it over and over and never get tired of it. I wish there was a real Mayberry, with Andy and the gang!

  • Sad that we lost Don Knotts.

Sad that Matt Liar lost his hair.

  • @MrOldSlacker it's sad that Matt Lauer can't get over himself.

  • @MrOldSlacker Agreed lol

  • @MrOldSlacker comment made me laugh out loud, well done

  • @MrOldSlacker Matt Liar? lol whatttt

  • @MrOldSlacker

Sad that he CUT his hair???what's up with idiots shaving their heads????

  • Lame interview, but these guys are legends. I love the AGS. Just a wonderful piece of Americana.

  • What a great great show. I have DVDs for the years Don Knotts was on as "Barney" and it's still genius comedy. It's just a shame this type of innocent family comedy isn't on TV anymore. Pure gold. Pure genius TV comedy.

  • OMG they both sounds exactly the same! lol

  • that was gomer not don knotts

  • haha Matt had hair! love the andy griffith show

  • Why can't you ask Andy for an autograph?

  • i hate this, makes me realize how old i am lol im only three years younger than opie

  • Don't ever ask Andy for an autograph. You'll be sorry.

  • He doesn't have to sign autographs. How about just enjoying all of his great work and let him live the rest of his life in peace. Never was into people bothering stars when they were out in public. Wonder where you were and if you were bothering him.

  • Not only will he not sign them, he will make you feel like a fool for even asking him. A very mean man. Others around him signed for me but Griffith was a real a hole.

  • How about answering what you were doing? He doesn't have to sign autographs for crazy fans. I have heard how "fans" bother celebirtes while they are out eating dinner, etc. I have heard nothing but great stories about Andy Griffith from fans and stars. I take your story with a grain of salt!

  • I can't think of a show that expressed compassion for others, politeness, and wholesome values better while still being something one could enjoy so much. A strongly believe I picked up good moral values during my childhood from watching this show. Kids are so impressionable, as well as, prone to want to watch tv for hours on end. This show was good for me and I still enjoy it.

  • Andy Griffith and Don Knotts were the best and funniest comedy team ever. We will never see the likes of what these two did. The Andy Griffith show is my all time favorite and no matter how many times I see it I still crack up. I still miss Don Knotts and don't want to think about Andy leaving us. My Mom used to ask me if I ever wanted to live in a small town. I said if it was Mayberry and Andy and Barney were there I would. God Bless Andy Griffith!

  • You're right. This was definitely one of the greatest shows ever in the history of television. It was perfectly cast, starting with Andy and Don, both comedic geniuses.

  • More than TV actors on a popular show...

They were friends of the family.

  • Hands Down: Thee greatest show EVER on 'tv...

The likes of which, sadly, I don't think we'll ever see pass this way again.

  • Really, babieblu2468, all 8 seasons?

  • omg i luv the Andy Griffith Show! My mom has every season
