To understand what Cocco is talking about, here's a bit of info on what Himeyuri is about.
Himeyuri is a group of young women who committed a group suicide when they realized that Okinawa was no longer holding strong against the overland attacks by U.S. troops. Instead of being captivated by U.S. troops that were notorious to molest captivated women, they committed a group suicide.
The Himeyuri survival women are so courageous to speak out their painful memory that they would rather forget. I encourage you to visit the Himeyuri Memorial while the survivals are still around to share stories. I pledge to the Himeyuri survival women that I will do my part by living strong.
Of course it still hurts, but I could be there without being overly disturbed.
My granny told me about the war only once. She said I do not need to know such sad and horrible war stories in order to be happy. Granny cried then, and she never told me about the War again. There were survivals of the Himeyuri tragedy and they were courageous enough to share their painful stories. There are things you can't forget and you want to forget.
It made me so happy. Back in those elementary school libraries, the victims of Himeyuri were presented as a bunch of nameless victims, but the new museum showed that somebody remembered each one of them. I was a little worried to go to the Memorial right before this live concert because it might upset me, but this time, it was more peaceful. It was indeed the sad site where the group suicide occurred but now is a place to pray for peace.
When I was a kid on the War Memorial Day the elementary school libraries were filled with pictures of the War in Okinawa. I went to Himeyuri Memorial to see those pictures again. But the renovated Himeyuri Memorial has become more of a peaceful place. Say, the last room, has pictures of the victims. Some victims do not even have pictures but there was a whole list of personal information including not only their physical characteristics but also their individual personalities.
I went to Himeyuri Memorial yesterday. [a male fan cries, I went there too!! and Cocco smiles and tells him to calm down.] It was renovated; it has new parks and has a new museum. I saw many tourist buses. There were so many origami cranes hang so I figure there are many people visiting. The entrance fee is 300 yen, by the way.
