I reffed this bout and it was polished concrete and in the winter with a cold floor and so slick you couldn't go fast if you tried or you would end up sliding out on the turns. I was skating 93A Speed Rays and was sliding all over the place. But that party bus was a blast! ICT knows how to host a tournament.

the rules are easy, the blocking is not so easy, and you can get penealties. most of the blocking that you see in old school derby is not allowed, its much too dangerous especially on a flat track and would cause many more fights. but the better question is how you got a 26 min clip on you tube! they stop me at 10 minutes.

My daughter , Pixie Tourette" a Texas Rollergirl , (Hotrod Honeys) was in this game. It was a demo Bout. Their coach instructed them to stop body blocking,as it was not a real game, (and would have been a blood bath)it was for show and fun.The other teams were new,up against a few founders of flat track derby. Bad game to watch when thinking of strategy....it was Not a REal game. Pixie told me , she had never played a game so Slow, this was not the real deal. A DEMO BOut.- Pixie's Dad

@teedee52 This is also an illegal block. This bout was played under the WFTDA 1.0 rules with only 9 pages and much left to refs discretion. Now in 2011 they have 43 pages in the 4.0 rules and every action is well defined in it's legality.

Interesting. Wanted to see the rules after I saw an episode of Psych with roller derby as the theme. I think it is a weird rule how they call off the "jam" and stuff. I wish they would just keep going around for a set time to make the sport even faster! But oh well, still interesting.

No. If they kept going the girls would wear out and the game would become too predictable and less strategic. Besides, they regroup pretty fast between jams and the jammer as well as all the other girls change every jam. And they rarely stop the clock. It still goes fast.

No, they wouldn't "wear out" the girls by having them stop the jam. The girls would just need to pace themselves better. I mean in hockey the guys can easily skate around the rink for long periods of time, so I don't think that is the factor. I think the real reason why they do it is so one team doesn't get a huge lead by having a jammer mess up early on. Still, the sport could be improved I think.

It's really a strategic move to keep the other team from scoring.If you're lead jammer, you can rack up a few points, then call it off before the other team gets a chance to score.

Even if the jam weren't called off by the lead jammer, the maximum length for a jam is 2 minutes.

Yes, and curling and roller derby ARE my two favorite sports! In fact, I plan to invite some of my roller girl friends to see me play in a curling bonspiel next month, before I head out to watch their derby bout that evening! They seem to admire my avid interest in curling and they likewise call me their #1 fan!!!

I think it should be pointed out that it's an AMATEUR sport and not the roller derby from the 70s where people actually made it their life's aspiration to go in circles and get elbows in the face lol. They both have their place and for some reason this looks like slow motion. maybe the angle. Maybe the floor, probably the floor, this looks like a lunch room!

There were no referees or rules in old schoold banked track derby. Not to mention the results were often predetermined. As to its 'amateur' status, aren't the Olympics full of amatuer athletes?

I recommend that everyone watch some of the videos from the national tournament in Austin posted on youtube by Roller1Sport. The speed and intensity is much, much more apparent in those videos, on that surface.

Ok - in response to how "slow" they are going. The derby you watched when you were younger was on a banked track. The way the track was built forced the skaters to go faster than you normally would on a flat track. And - if you were out there with those girls, you would realize its a LOT faster than it looks. And a TRUE sport.

What we are looking at here is horse raising, just instead of horses some jerk said why not throw in girls on wheels. If you want to blow your time away on something like this then go right ahead.

If you want to make Roller Skating in a loop around some high-school Gym a real sport this needs to get interesting and as BIG as can be.

just the way it is, it's just so boring, that I'll never go see another LIVE event again.

Amazing how you think Speed Roller Skating isn't a sport, yet, Short track Speed Ice Skating is deemed a sport by the Olympics. I'm not seeing much of a difference here except for the fact that Roller Derby is a team sport on roller skates but the same concept..to see who is faster.

We have many girls on our league that participate in other sports, and many of them didn't make it completely through their first practice. I highly doubt you'd make through one, either.
