One study states at the most 5500 Canadians sought Care in the USA that is .016%. Bumrungrad hospital in Thailand saw 56,000 US ^patients in 2005 and 64K in 2006. This is just one hospital in One country that saw this many Americans. My friend who is from India talks about the US patients who go their for health in his former home town

I think the current system in America is not working. However, universal healthcare has definite negative consequences. I think neither extreme is the answer but some sort of middle ground needs to be reached.

News flash, there is hardly anymore "competition" between these HMOs, PPOs, or whatever private insurance health care providers want to call themselves. Not for profit means that doctors make a good living, but not a killing. In Europe, the not-for-profit system attracts doctors who actually CARE for the people. They live well and drive nice cars, too. If the healthcare field is leveled so that no one is left out-that creates fair competition, but shifts it from who makes the most money to who cares for the most people-the government could offer bonuses to doctors and clinics showing the most healthy patients.

Police and firefighters fill roles necessary to the security and most basic structure essential for society to exist. These can not be compared to healthcare anymore than apples can be compared to oranges.

I sympathize with the goal of universal healthcare, but its unsustainable. Lack of resources has resulted in lack of services and forced many British citizens to turn to medical tourism (in places such as India) for treatment. I am also opposed to any plan that forces my participation.

You are correct-that the government should not run medical facilities. Under Dennis' plan, the middle man (insurance co.) is removed, placing the quality of care back to the doctor where it belongs-it is different than the VA which is run by military branch of the government. Single payer doesn't mean that your healthcare is government owned, it simply means it is government funded.

You seem to know much about Dennis' plan. If put in place, would I be free to opt out? That is, would I be free to choose to not pay into the plan and at the same time not accept any of its benefits?

Yes, you could opt out if you were not interested in participating-because in the Kucinich plan, there is no out of pocket. If you didn't use the plan, that would be your choice, but if you needed the benefit, it would be available to you. Unfortunately, Dennis K. is no longer running for the Presidency so his plan is unlikely to be adopted. Hillary would force ALL citizens to pay into insurance...a disaster waiting to happen if you don't want to opt IN..Obama is middle ground between the two.

I appreciate your genuine response - typically I get a negative or condescending response from others. Even though there is no "out of pocket", I hope I still wouldn't be indirectly funding it through tax dollars. I'm completely indifferent to a government plan as long as its optional - what worries me most is the potential a government plan has to fail - in such as case, we would have an entire generation dependent on a failing system, with no options- a deep hole to climb out of indeed.

HR 676 is the best Health Care Reform I have heard/read! Get the insurance companies out! We do NOT need a middle man with their hands out taking their cut, while we do NOT get the care/coverage we deserve and pay for! The idea of getting sick and NOT having to file bankruptcy after losing your home, car, all assets due to getting sick, which is occuring now, sounds like the BEST idea to me!
