I was in the Navy once upon a time and have seen these animals in the wild. They're pretty amazing and given that they're endangered I don't think they should be hunted but then again, what other options does a small island nation like Japan have for providing food for itself? This is a bunch of men and women risking their lives trying to stop illegal whaling from the ban on commercial whaling but the Japanese whalers continue on but say they are collecting them for science. I mean come ON! 935 Minke whales for science in one year! BS! So they throw butaric acid on the ships to screw wit hthem since they cant kill them. A really good show.

I was in the Navy once upon a time and have seen these animals in the wild. They're pretty amazing and given that they're endangered I don't think they should be hunted but then again, what other options does a small island nation like Japan have for providing food for itself? I'd really appreciate the Japanese POV as well and I too am curious as to the taste of whale meat. If I ever get to Japan again.......

Paul Watson was one of the founders of Greenpeace and he was asked to leave because they couldn't stomach his tactics. But what he said about GP makes perfect sense: You wouldn't come upon a woman being raped and all you would do is "watch" (not exact words, but the meaning), so he took action for the whales, just as he took action to save harp seals in the 70s and 80s. Now harp sealing isn't as profitable as it once was, and it will be the same with whaling.

Because when places in the ocean used to have lots of whales to see and you knew there was lots in that area, then you go back today and there is almost none, that is a good indication that the population is low. You don`t see as many as you used to be able to see.
