I always wonder, and no one can ever give me a good answer, how do guitarists come up with solos? Do they hear it in their head first, are they messing around with different scales, or are they just messing around on the guitar in general?

solos are usually based off of scales, like harmonic minor, and harmonic major, they use parts of scales throughout their solos, and music theory too, thats what scales are derived from, so thats a simple way how, i didnt describe it perfectly but the idea
