As was stated in this video. The Islamic world was the last part of the world to buy into the modern illusion of secular ethnic nationalist order. That illusion is simply dying. In Europe, this mentallity has nearly destroyed everything else, it is in the process of collapsing entirely. In the "Middle East," the political elite is attempting to reprop up their political order w/ the older religious order. Both will fail.

Mr Ajami makes an interesting point about how a leader can set himself up for a juxtaposition that he would be better off without.

Nopes. It was not until 1930 that Turkey requested that Istanbul be the sole name/reference to the former Constantinople. Hence any period with a caliphate being situated there would refer to the city as Constantinople.
