Theodor Morrell was a medical doctor of pseudoscientific sensibility and a penchant for homeopathy, as opposed to general medicine. Morrell had no clout as a physician in the Reich and held no important offices as a minister for health. He was an utterly bizarre man, Brandt was certainly a more competent physician, but Morrell hadn't committed any identifiable crimes against humanity, whereas Brandt had both ministerial and participatory authority over numerous dreadful crimes.

I know it's difficult to tell but it's strange how calm he looked when being given his sentence, not that I expected dramatics.

Though it is bizarre that the US were the judicators in a case that deals with human experimentation seeing as (though not as far as the Nazis) the things that they did in the 20th century were pretty horrific.

@p911657 Do some research, please. Brandt actually did not *personally* perform these actions; other famous Nazi "doctors" such as Mengele and co. were directly responsible for this. Brandt was the titular Reich Commissioner for Health and Sanitation, something like a Surgeon General. High ranking Nazis at the time were constantly involved in power struggles and often did not inform each other of their activities, so claims that he personally "ok'd" brutal human experimentation are dubious.

There was almost no scientific or medical value to any of these experiments. There were pseudo-scientific excuses made to justify these horrible "experiments", but the bottom-line is that it was almost totally due to extreme sadism on the part of the perpetrators. William Shirer, in "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" devotes almost an entire chapter to this, and after interviewing medical experts concluded that any results of this "research" were completly useless and of no value.

@farmerne Although sick and twisted, some of the Nazi experiments did provide beneficial medical data, though that was NOT the Nazis' intent. The studies on the effects of altitude provided valuable data that is now used to treat decompression sickness and pulmonary and cerebral edema. The experiments in hypothermia provided valuable information to save lives. The fact that useful data obtained from a handful does not justify the means of obtaining the information.check out jlaw.com for more

The defense that Brandt (and others) tried to use was that they were only following orders, that it was necessary to give accurate results, etc. What the Nuremburg prosecutors had to do was show (successfully) that these people actually enjoyed doing these atrocious deeds. For example, one associate of Brandt testified how the good doctor (Brandt) referred to the victims as "criminals" and "jew scum".

I've had a computer for about 3 years and I've found these medical experiments were of a large scale and seen many pics and vids of them. For instance Mengeles twins being released from Auschwitz, and a vid from 1 actual twin seen in the video. I'm pretty sure I seen the actual hanging of Karl Brandt, and several other Nazi doctors here on YouTube. Far too many got away with their crimes though.

Obviously these "doctors" knew that what they did was so incriminating that they didn't want to world to find out about it. Plus only a minority of these "subjects" (victims) managed to survive to tell the story. So the full magnitude of the Nazi "experiments" may never be known.

The Nazi's didn't want this at Auschwitz so they began destroying as much evidence as they could. One female Nazi doctor claimed at her trial she was relieving pain and misery by killing patients. She didn't mention they were in pain cuz she sliced open their legs and rubbed broken glass and wood splinters into the wound.

@SiggyStern Too often, history concentrates on the end result and doesn't get at the things that happened before-hand that lead up to this. The sentencing of Brandt and others like him was merely the end of a long process that started way back at the beginning of the Nazi regime. First it was rationalization to "euthanize" the very old and sick, then the mentally ill, then those deemed "unfit". It was only a short step to apply this to killing Jews. Some documentaries have examined this process.
