  • Chinese University of Hong Kong had finish a survey at June. That survey is used to ask about how to people feel between the british rule era and the chinese rule era. Finally 58% of hong kongers think British Hong Kong is better than HKSAR and only 18% of HKers think HKSAR is better than BHK If you can read chinese you can search for apple daily on 29/6/2011 directly sorry for my extremely poor english

  • @ric66521 LOL, you are quoting from Apple Daily? Everyone in HK know they only write bullsh!t stories. I will trust a more creditable source. Nice try though ric

  • @phoenixrff I don't think every hong kongers think Apple Daily is writing rubbish, those survey are taken by the University. That having no relations with the Apple Daily writing rubbish. Also would you explain what means by 'Creditable source'? Is that means Takungpao?

  • How strange. The final end to the a city born out of a historical oddity and circumstance. Existing differently yet being all very much the same.

Hong Kong, a legacy of Britain's Empire, a Chinese City of Western origin. Where the Dragon and the Lion exchanged cups of tea and shots of whiskey.

  • @aspiringdrummer17

stop under the control of Queen anymore, most Honkongers are happy .In 2017 we can selcet our own Chief Executive, that's the freedom never got from UK.after 150 years, feel happy to be chinese AGAIN.

  • @daveduvw i don`t like hong kong,i prefer bangkok

  • last darkness

  • @aspiringdrummer17

Unfortunately, you are wrong. Most Chinese do not like British rule, and see Britain an imperialist greedy power. Why else do you think the 1842 Opium war is called OPIUM WAR? You force China to allow British traders to get millions of Chinese addicted to opium. How can you expect people to even appreciate HK today if you simply *forget* about something important like that?

  • @Phead128 I wasn't talking about the Chinese, I was talking about the Hongkongers. There is no point discussing the past because whats done is done.

  • All these folk talkin s*** about China beinq a communist. China is no longer a communist. China is transitioning themselves to democracy in a VERY SLOW fashion. VEry slow. WHen things happen to quickly, things can collapse. So for china to transition themselves to democracy, it will take 200 years to do it. Cuz remember, there are like 1 billion chinese people.

  • @BookRocky24 You think that - today is 90 anniversary of the CCP and accoring to BBC reports last week, CCP membership is now over 80 million and is confirmed the biggest political party in the world. That would means the CCP is strong enough to fend off any thought of democracy.

An American who joined CCP many years ago said he did not think the CCP would step down from power for many years to come thanks to big membership count. He also expect China to became a superpower one day.

  • @aspiringdrummer17 Chinese are taking away their right - In fact they are not taking most of the rights away cos they are protected by basic laws agreed between China and Britain in 1984.

It is the only place in China where protest and freedom of worships still exist including laws made by the British before 1997 still also exists.

That may lasts till year 2047 when 50 years guarantee of capitalism and basic law expire unless China agree to extend the guarantee or Communists out.

  • @aspiringdrummer17 It's not a matter of agree or disagree. I stated historical facts. Their culture is not that "distinct" from say a Chinese person from Shanghai, or Chengdu. They all celebrate Chinese new year, recite Tang Dynasty poetry, and have the same written language (simplified vs. traditional aside), not to mention most Chinese in HK have roots in the Mainland, some only going as far back as the 1960s. And what government in the world does not want want things done their way?

  • G.T.F.O

    lololololol

  • peace2all from RobotRuss

  • God save the King

  • As a Hong Kong native , this evening was quite sad to me.

  • @barnabyfox Well mate, the Cold War belongs to the world before 1991, not our time. If you really missed that time, why don't play CoD6? I bet you'll find that kind of feeling.

  • British rule was much better than marxist-leninist Chicom dictatorship. Anyway, the past will never return; Hong Kong should become a country maybe in 2-3 decades.

  • british loser always said they make HK today, but please tell me why UK mess up now?

UK's economy is a piece of shit now, they do nothing under american rule

  • @charles198877 why there are 42 foolish guys thumbing up to barnbabyfox's crap? british can steal, rape, destroy and kill. it sounds like what they have done in 17 18 th century in america, same as case in hong kong. I tell you why their economy is a piece of shit now. because they can only do that things to people who cannot fight. but nowadays we get stronger and no longer be that peaceful and innocent "native" that is what they regard. they without understanding are still not openminded yet .

  • @univerben sorry, would you rather of been in the fields starving to death because of Mao's dictats? Like making the Sparrow a great enemy of the people.

I don't think the hundreds of thousands of refugees who fled China to Hong Kong shared your superficial notion of freedom.

  • @univerben -First of all, hit puberty/maturity before you contribute to an argument like this.

-Second of all, you missed something out. We were best at kicking your ARSE.

Think how the farmers and citizens of Hong Kong were when a massive dreadnought battleship was floating in their harbour, and kicking the shit out of their wooden fleet. Today, Hong Kong is one of the most successful companies in the world as a result of our colonization. Your nation crumbled before we came along.

  • @OfficialFearClan Of cause you all can kick my ass by using force but not brain. Stop interrupting our own lives. What kind of succuess did you bring?

  • @univerben Economical success, technology, human rights and working conditions that were safe. Given a few more years and Hong Kong would have had very few factories with the drop dead awful conditions it has today.

How do i know this? i work at MK, as an inspector. Very rarely do i ever see a factory with safe working conditions, and i have even seen child labour. There was a BBC news interview a month ago-a chinese human rights supporter. In the background you could see armed police.

  • @OfficialFearClan Am i going to laugh? You would claim that you brought the success today. Oh really? Where have you been when Hong Kong was occupied by Japanese doggy? Run? or Scared to hug your mother? I am sorry you are so narrow-minded that you see the success in this way. Without protection by our grandma grandfather, that would be a tough war. You may affect the city to succeed some kind of way, but we worked with our own hands to create the future.

  • @univerben Communist.

Your kind should be wiped off the face of the earth.

  • @OfficialFearClan Good Idea! But first, let us get rid of Eurpoean Racism, Wall-Street, Rottschield Family, and the American Empire! Those things are the greatest threat of the world today.

  • @OfficialFearClan murderer and 禮義廉^.^

  • @univerben Dont even get me started on the story of the Emperor handing out orders to his grand army regarding the attack on a British outpost, on the tiger century, of the tiger year, of the tiger month, (etc) and how he massarcred his own army with one simple mistake.

  • @barnabyfox we would rather be poor and free than be rich second-class slaves of white imperialism and chauvinism.

  • The last evening under dictatorial colonial rule, the last time being governed by a country on the other side of the globe. A new day of liberty and Chinese rule.

  • @NordicSocialist i hope sweden enjoys sharia law

  • @xASxDragoon What does that haft to do with anything? If you're not familiar with Sweden or feel that you can reply on my real message about colonialism, I don't even see why you would bother comment at all.

  • @NordicSocialist well you bashing britain for something that didnt happen, dictorial colonial rule( i can understand that to some extent but they people were free to do what they want) but a new day of liberty under chinese rule, well thats just naive.

you tell me not to bother commenting on sweden if im not familiar, well to be honest im not familiar but then why are you commenting on something that has nothing to do with you

  • @xASxDragoon Maybe naive if you live in the belief that some countries should rule parts on the other side of the globe. You can call what you want, but I see colonialism as dictatorial. I made my point on the Hong Kong question. I'm afraid the entire YouTube and internet are full of these stands and opinions, so to follow you rightfully, pro-colonial people are also discussing matters that have nothing to do with them.

  • "You can call what you want, but I see colonialism as dictatorial"

On the contrary, it's only through colonial governments that people have had true freedom, protected by the state and legislation. You call Mao's china free but Hong Kong dictatorial? Mughal India free but the British Raj dictatorial?

  • @xASxDragoon My problem with your message was that you posted something that had absolutley nothing to do with my stand on Hong Kong, and that was sharia law. I get the feeling that you are mad at me and want to return something "bad" about Sweden since it also appears that you're some conservative islamophobic. But I can tell you that the goal wasn't to "bash britain", it was to bash colonialism. I'm looking at my original post and can't even see "britain" being named.

  • @NordicSocialist i am islamophobic in the way that they threatern our way of life but i believe colonialism has its pros and cons for the general population as you cant deny that the ex british colonies are now the most prosperous countries in the world, hong kong, singapore, australia, new zeland, canada. but your entitled to your opinion and i respect that and should never of used sharia law as an insult

  • The return of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China from the illegal British landlords by forced and unfair treaty signifies the long-awaited end of arrogant Western colonialism and exploitation against the will of the innocent native peoples.

  • @barnabyfox

You should be rfid microchipped as a disease by birth. Hitler's forces should have shelled England even more, not just its rubbishy London.

  • @SeventhSun

thts a bit of hypocrisy goin on about bombing london when your going on about the 'evil' westerners. and you might like to know the western world isnt actually united its just the propoganda thts fed to u at birth

  • @barnabyfox

What? An overcrowded emptied commercial shell of an otherwise peaceful and idyllic island thanks to you gweilo diseases? So much for the British Empire that needs drug money to sustain itself. Pfft. The sun did set, and it's no more, thank God!

  • @SeventhSun

um the sun still doesnt set on the empire we still got island territorises around the world to prevent tht sun ever setting

  • @barnabyfox Actually HK will not fully merged into mainland China until 2047 - According to UK-Chinese agreement - 50 years for HK people to run the former colony.

But it seems to me that China seems to start breaking promises very slowly.

  • ...provided the skills and cheap labor to HK and during the 60s-70s, HK started to prosper. HK DID NOT prosper right after UK took control as the result of the Opium War in 1840. It was more than 100 years later when HK proceeded to develop, which was about the time Cultural Revolution broke out.

China was the main reason that HK developed, which can been seen at the numbers of trading today. But of course, the presence of UK in HK’s history did play a major role in HK’s development.

  • UK needed HK not the other way around. At the time when UK won the Opium War, it needed a place to trade with China and that place was HK. The reason why UK chose HK is because of the natural setting, the harbor is a big plus for shipping. Because the trading (yes, it was opium) was so huge, UK couldn't resist itself from making profit...

HK started to develop after the civil war ended in China in 1949 and many people from Shanghai immigrated to HK because of the fear of communism. They...

  • Those of you saying Hong Kong would be nothing without Britain,

Hong Kong's growth and development was paid for by Hong Kong's own taxpayers, not out of the British public purse. The reason why Hong Kong could build such infrastructure was because of Hong Kong's laissez faire Economic policies, not because the UK concentrated its energy on developing it. Although Britain's involvement was very important, it's was not the single leading factor.

  • HK would be nuffin without britain....

  • Without the British Hong Kong city would never exist.......there si nothing else to add....as it is a simple historic fact without any connotation to anything. I hope the Chinese people in Hong Kong, who are btw culturally very much different from the mandarin culture, will not loose their unique Hong Kong culture.

  • @andresunny70 we don't don't worry

  • Comment removed

  • @barnabyfox By condemning you right now, I am exercising my right to free speech - and stuffing it in your face. These are truly my thoughts. Nobody is stopping from doing this. Days won't be numbered as none of the Chinese governments care whatsoever. So? What the f*** are u talking about free speech for then??? No more bullshit from outside the Chinese country is good. Just stick your nose out and stop claiming other people's achievements. DONE.

  • @barnabyfox Free speech as in saying "F*** You" to a Brit?

Well, as you can see, that's the free speech that I have now but didn't have before. Can't wait til your ancestors jump out of their graves when they know you lost ALL those colonies..Lets lose Scotland too in Fall 2010 referendum.

  • @barnabyfox So why didn't your great empire do the same favor for Bombay, India? For the most part, British rule over the city of Hong Kong was for the monetary benefits of Britain only - that we gave. Hong Kong's economy will surpass London. You'll see.

  • De-Anglicisation has become a matter of national pride in some places and especially in regions that were once under colonial rule, where vestiges of colonial domination are a sensitive subject.[2][3] As a consequence, anglicised names have been officially discouraged in many places: Ireland's Kingstown has reverted back to its original Irish name of Dún Laoghaire, India's Bombay is now Mumbai

  • @barnabyfox

If your queen is so great then tell me who made the conflict today between India and Pakistan, who created "Iraq", who drugged China for nearly half a century, who plungered the Summer Palace? Did you all come up with the Chinese, Egyptian artifact in your museum by your own creation? We Hong Kong locals couldn't own properties on the peak, or go to certain clubs and beaches before the Japanese takeover. The governor of Hong Kong was appointed by the English, not by election.

  • @barnabyfox

People of Hong Kong made what it is today. Quit your white supremacist logic, would you? Hong Kong was never self governed under the British rule, with no democracy whatsoever. Before WWII, Chinese were heavily discriminated against. It is from the racial desegregation after the war, with local Hong Kongers finally liberated from that racist taboo, Hong Kong finally started prospering.

  • FUCK the British Empire. It was made by people born in a Shit stain sized Barbarian island. They are sub humans compared to citizens of the Middle Kingdom. The Chinese underestimated you Barbarians. But they won't make that mistake again.

Thanks for developing HK though. China is so huge that it didn't even need HK. So you barbarians did a good job. I love watching the ceremony of the Handover of HK because I love seeing the ugly crying faces of the ugly sub human Brit barbarians.

  • @Nickdapantydroppa Nice British name you've got there, Nick.

  • @RichBanks2010 jealousy? no. why would i be jealous of a bunch of colonizers?

  • @barnabyfox there wasnt a single british soldier in china. so stop the bullshit. brits did not drive the japs out of china. the only best foreign support we had was the US flying tigers. apologise to tibetans? are u perhaps talkin about the british invaded tibet in 1903 and killed many tibetans with ur machine guns? nope the brits have never apologised for that. nor have they apologised for forcing opium upon millions of chinese

britis will forever be known for their crimes against chinese ppl

  • @barnabyfox Absolutely !!

  • millions of chinese suffered becuz of greedy brits who wanted to make the whole world their empire. fuck the queen the dirty old hag. fuckin british soldiers they deserve to get killed and blown up. taleban > british soldiers

  • Why would any free country willingly submit to china, the country where people would watch a baby starve in the gutter. 90% of former British colonies say that their country was safer and friendlier when British ruled.

  • british are the worst criminals in the world and should be punished for all their crimes against the chinese ppl. chinese will never forget the century of humiliation and how greedy imperialists brits forced opium upon millions of chinese ppl while carving china into pieces. we will never forget how brits burned down the imperial summer palace and looted our treasures. fuckin brits deserve to get wiped off the map. i laugh at brits getting their ass blown up in afghanastan LOL u deserve it

  • yes i agree if your talking about china, you slave your own children banish people from thier own views and cause deaths of your own people through stavation, you should be happy we owned you because to be honest your country was better under british rule ;)

  • our 'country' was better under british rule? u never ruled china u stupid fuckin honkey. go get fucked by a roadside bomb in afghanastan u white shit.

"90% of former British colonies say that their country was safer and friendlier when British ruled"

is that why most ended up fighting for independence? british empire was the worst empire in the world. look at u now. britain is nothing but a lap dog of the US LOOOOOOOOL!

  • @hcn9 You're obviosuly an uneducated moron. How were they to know their own people would screw them over after gaining independance? I agree about the US statement... and the current UK government sucks, as well as the EU. The British Empire was the best thign that happened to the world in terms of advancement. Although many atrocities were committed by the Empire, what the Spanish did to the Incas was worse.

  • You don't know what you are talking about. Maybe you should read some history books. Where are you from, I doubt you are from Hong Kong whose people enjoyed freedom under protection from the British.

  • yes i did learn some fuckin history. did u? go read about the opium wars u stupid shit. and how greedy brits forced chinese into unequal treaties and burned down our imperial summer palace

  • I know perfectly well about the Opium wars, the point is not how Britain took Hong Kong, but rather how they made a successful free society in Hong Kong, whose people back in the 90s had the choice of British rule or rule from Beijing they would have overwhelmingly chosen British rule, quite simply because Britain actually didn't rule Hong Kong, the people of Hong Kong ruled themselves with the protection that Britain provided. Are you from China or Hong Kong?

  • who give a fuck how brits looked after a few million ppl in hong kong. that will not wash away their crimes of makin hundred of million chinese ppl suffer in the mainland. if opium wars didnt happen, china wouldnt have suffered from a century of humiliation. china wouldnt have been forced to kneel to foreign powers. china's 2000yr old imperial system wouldnt have ended. there wouldve been no civil war between communists and nationalists

babysittin hong kong will not suddenly make them good guys

  • Ha well well well, so you are clearly jealous of the Hong Kong people. China's problems were China's fault, you still have a rubbish government, maybe you should worry about addressing that instead of blaming everything on the British.

  • jealous of hong kong? LOOOL! ive been to both hong kong and mainland china. i prefer to live in shanghai. china's problems were china's fault? so basically ur saying we told the british to force opium on us and take away our land through unequal treaties? bullshit. fuckin greedy brits.

  • You took the drugs, your fault! Good for you that you think Shanghai is better, because you wouldn't be able to say any different since you live in a Police state with no freedom of speech.

  • I'm Irish, they aren't my soldiers. I however don't see how they are "retard soldiers" People die in war, thats what happens. China's foreign policy is much more questionable, interfering in Darfur and supporting regimes such as Zimbabwe and your domestic policies are even worse.

  • @hcn9 Fuck you slant eyed yellow faced bastard

  • @gray499kcw wtf u say white pale face honkey? go get blown the fuck up like fireworks with ur PUSSY soldiers in afghanastan. il piss on their on their graves LOOOL! retarded brit soldiers make good test subjects for homemade bombs hahahaha

  • @hcn9 I bet your mouth bleeds every 28 day's doesn't it

  • @gray499kcw that did not make sense...

  • @hcn9 ever 28 days a women has a period. you talk like a cunt

  • :) u can cry all u want but the fact is Hong Kong IS CHINESE losers!

    I LOVE CHINA!!

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP U FAG

  • hahahahahahaha

    u're so funny ''no culture/cheeseburger-eater american'' :)

  • Screw you all who think HK is better off with UK! HK is Hk is bcos of the hard work of its ppl there. Compare HK to other British Colony... are they like HK? Think about it! HK was LEASED to the Brits ok so its NOT a choice for them to decide whether it should be returned to the motherland. SCREW Tibet!!! Kick all the tibetans and separatist out from there. Thats what it should be done!

  • Hong Kong was ANNEXED, only the NEW TERRITORIES were leased. For one who speaks with that much passion you'd think you could get it right. Learn your history, then open your mouth. Not the other way.

  • a very sad day...

  • With the British flag in Hong Kong and the Portuguese flag in Macau, that's how it should be. God save.

  • Britain is the reason why Hong Kong is even on the map!!

HKSAR sucks, Hong Kong, Hong Kong(U.K.) rules!!!

  • @HKUK94 go live in britain . we dont want people like u in hong kong

  • Yeah, and your from Hong Kong??

  • @jdiddy666

Hmm... Another China Nazi. Down with the PRC, long live free Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Tibet, East Turkestan, and Mongolia!

  • God Save the Queen

  • Ok, I know about the whole deal between China and the British with Hong Kong blah blah blah, I'm Chinese myself. But really, China isn't communist anymore if you look at it. You'd know that if you've been there and weren't reading from 30 year old news articles. And why all the discrimination and communism hate? What happened to the equality everybody always preaches about? Man, You'd think they were responsible for the holocaust or something the way you guys talk.

  • I wouldn't worry about it, most of the people with rubbish dribbling onto the keyboard are uneducated. you should feel sorry for them. I am from Australia and am happy being a neighbour of china.

  • funny??

  • well, communism seems to be working pretty well so far :/

  • gamehazard101, hong kong has an agreement with the PRC (pushed by British politicians) government that it has the right to govern itself. If HK were to be fully subject to the current administration in Mainland China, it would not thrive the way it is now. Not just economically, but social aspects as well.

  • Yeah I just loved that the only place in china where the torch runner (olympics) couldnt feel safe was in Hong Kong man freedom of speech is very much alive there.

  • Noooo we don't want any communist in Hong Kong. Lead our way again, god save the queen.

  • British rules!! British built HK, gave us education... I like British Hong Kong

  • Hong Kong has never been communist

  • now

  • this is what the British done and china just stole it off us

  • not only that, who do you think was killing indians before america was an independent nation?!?!? whats with the double standards on that anyways? i always hear how bad america was because of our treatment of the natives, well the british did the same damn thing, sheesh. isnt history fun, you can find out the most hated nation on the earth today is only following in your footsteps. i dont mean any disrespect by that but come on, stop the double standards almost all nations are guilty.

  • Your hearing want you want.

  • you killed them more than we did, its even in your constitution!

  • the point was you did it, im afraid the numbers arent really important. thats like saying killing 8 is ok but 10 no no no thats those evil americans. but it doesnt really matter to me, im a citizen of america and canada and since canada is part of the commonwealth of nations.....i believe, dont quote me on that i spent more time in america so im catching up on canadian history.

  • lmao i hope england will be england again scotland scotland wales wales by the looks of it atm is bnp is only hope other day i heard indians are voting for bnp to get all polish pakies so on out because most of indians who come over here were born under the british indian colony so there classed as british

  • Hong Kong was actually a stolen city from the British.

Hong Kong is actually going back to where it was born.

  • agree. Luckily HK is under China now. Otherwise, we may have to be screwed (built another airport?) by the british so that they can sustain their ailing economy! good luck hong kong!

  • Hong Kong was an economic success, the new airport ensured that this success would continue for years to come.

  • Compare the success of Hongkong with that of mainland China, (corruption, chaos), it is the legal system, the core value (virture) that british left to use. And in fact that the society is threaned as more and more 'intervention' by mainland China, under the influence of 'running-dog-Tsang' (See how the former cardinal bishop Chen disguist him...

  • UK and Communist China?

    Both are cruel animals...

  • So what? At least we don't go around committing genocide or any other unthinkable acts.

  • well, not anymore you mean

  • Britain never commited genocide

  • you wouldnt consider 300,000 genocide!?!? The massacre of some 300,000 Kikuyu by British forces in the 1950s is arguably the least known mass slaughter of the 20th century. LOOK IT UP!!!!!

  • what about the americans commiting genocide? the american education system doesnt tell you about that does it? you dont see many natives these days

  • Hong kong is 'stolen' by the communist China...

The legal entity after Manchuria is ROC, not PROC, so should handover to ROC, taiwan, then PRoC use military force or other method to reunify. (or the ROC unify China with '3 principles of people'..

Communist China is just 'father of robber' only.

  • Though you may not agree, this year is still the 98 year of ROC. In reality when you go to taiwan you still need a passport (vista) issued by the taiwan authority...they are still in ruling power.

  • Screw it.

We care if Hong Kong is alive!

  • I got a question, was it truely the video of last day of British Hong Kong?

  • Yes, it was. Taken from my apartment window at Mid-Level (Euston Court)

  • Nobody knows. Several years ago there was a US video concerning the fire in Dec 1996, at tsimshatsui (嘉利大厦), the original sound track was in ENU, with cantonese substitute.

But when the US took the film (revert back), the firemen were wearing the uniform (new local of SAR on their shoulders), not the enblem on the old uniform...

They mixed the TV news and remake of the film together, thinking that nobody knows...

  • ...should be new logo of SAR on their shoulders...

  • Well Barack Obama is good I think. But Bush is a fucking dictator!

  • Americans are among the the most stupid people in the world. Take George Bush for example.

  • Some people from our own country would make me question that statement.

  • long live british hong kong

  • YES! LONG LIVE HONG KONG, BRITISH CROWN COLONY!!! forever!

this is the saddest day in world's history!

  • Rule Britannia!!!

    Britannia rules Hong Kong!!

  • indeed! wish it could come true again!

  • Hong Kong are much richer and better now..

  • Totally agree

  • the US has peaked and isn't even a speck in history compared to the vast british empire, which continues today as autonomous countries under our head of state QEII

  • Yes, British Empire only nation in the History of mankind to be classified as a Hyperpower -- USA is only a superpower. However, the future for GB looks bleak at the moment.

  • Just fond memories now, although alot was achieved along the way. I think the fact that the empire is independent now is also one of those many achievements.

  • in the year 2000 the usa was classified as a hyperpower. i think the old british empire had more political power but the military of the american empire is far more powerful

  • well i would hope a 21st century army would be more powerful then a 19th century one.....

  • i dont mean in terms of firepower, i ment in terms of deployments and reach. but it is hard finding info on how powerful britains military was at that point in history.

  • well, in regards to reach global, in terms of deployments, global

  • Theres no such thing as the "American Empire"!

  • look it up, i wasnt referring to an empire in the classic sense. but a empire as far as military bases on foreign soil and such. just type it into google.

  • Just because you can google American Empire doesn't mean it's true. The british had a Empire because they governed the Land and the people they controlled. They even drew up the borders for quite a few countries you see on your map today.Just because America has military bases spread out over quite a few countries doesn't make it a empire i'm afraid.

  • well if we arent gonna call it an empire (used by many nations to describe it) how about we say, "nation with imperial ambitions and actions." that is until the president shreds whatever remains of the constitution. the United States died over 100 years ago it is no longer a constitutional republic, so just call it america. the greatest document in history was the constitution to bad its gone, i would love to have a constitutional republic again, minus slavery. its sad, its just in the past now

  • I'm a American, but I was born in a Former French colony. I've been blessed to have travel quite a bit and I can objectively say that the former British colonies are much better off than former colonies of other European powers.

I am not naive enough to think that the British are perfect, but they did bring their educational, civil, infrastructure, among other advances to the colonies. I LOVED Hong Kong when it was under British rule.

  • Yes i have to agree with you,The british brought democracy and knowledge to many parts of the world. All you have to do is look at places like America, Australia, India to see how much influence the British had on the world. But like you said, the British were not perfect. They did alot of awful things aswell, which as an Englishmen i'm not proud of. But i'm a strong believer that the good things the British brought to this world outweigh the bad things, but that is just my opinion.

  • The British didnot practice Democracy in India. Otherwise it would have been a Domionion, like Canada and Australia a lot earlier on.

Rather the Indian founding fathers had to go to Britian itself to find out for themselves what democracy was....

  • I didn't say anything about the British practicing democracy in India?

  • ENGLAND, that is what you were implying inyour statement:
