One just built a HUGE web outside my door. I'm scared to walk outside so I looked it up on here. I live in Florida so i'm assuming it's a tropical orb weaver. I doubt i'm the object of her interest but still.. i'm terrified and it's dark.. and I need to leave :-(
@JanaINJax She won't come near you if she has any choice. They won't leave the web if they can avoid it. If you do walk into one of the side silks, she'll retreat to the side. If you walk into it, she'll drop on a drop thread to the ground. They are also harmless. There are very similar species in Florida. Use a strong torch and start watching her. Give her a name. That's the way I overcame my fear. I was once an out-of-control arachnophobe but overcame it - now obsessed by them! Good luck!
@lynnehurstbridge Thanks! She built her web outside (Like 2 feet from my front door) for 2-3 more nights then realized that she was kind of in the way and moved it off to the side. She's out there every night now and i'm growing more and more comfortable with her. I kind of expect her to be there now :-)
@JanaINJax Great news. You will find you can predict her behaviour pretty well, but then she'll also do different things. Always interesting. And free! Once you get fond of one, you will start to find it addictive. Got to go - haven't done the rounds of my orb weavers in the garden yet tonight! :-)
@GeneralG1810 Thanks! They are incredible. The more I watch hem, the more amazed I become. Love St Andrews Cross spiders, and simply adore the little jumping spiders. They are the smartest and cutest of all. I am now blogging my spiders on spiderblogger.blogspot.com. Glad to know there are other spider fans out there. The little guys need us to plead their case.
Wow shes certainly not camera shy, nice vid. Personally I like the St Andrews cross theyre a great looking spider. I also like playing with jumping spiders if you can catch them in your palm they'll jump from 1 to the other as if theyre just showing off saying "hey look what I can do!" :)

I do like how you are teaching you children to appreciate spiders instead of fear them. I am a child that was raised in fear, and now I am trying so hard to get over the stigma I was taught.
pandoradoom - thank you so much for saying so. I agree that it is a taught fear. I spend time in schools and with individual kids showing them the awe of spiders, and what fun they are to watch in their own backyards. Get to know spiders as individuals, and the fear fades. That's how I got rid of my arachnophobia. Thank you for your comment - much appreciated.

Thank you so much for your comment. Isn't it wonderful to be able to watch these incredible creatures right at your own house?
